I have two data center sites, one in Indianapolis and the other in Olympia. We have Dell Data Domains at both sites as our backup storage. I am currently in the process of moving our cloud connect storage from an old HydraSTOR to the Dell Data Domain. With the hydraSTOR I was able to seed backup copy data from a portable NAS directly onto the cloud connect repository as it was presented as a CIFS share. With the Data Domain it is using something called ddboost and I’m not sure how to run a copy job to import that initial backup copy data onto the Dell Data Domain. I was thinking in how to collect those “epic Phrases” you had heard regarding backup justifications, the worst ones, in my personal experience were:We don't need that, I usually create a copy on my Desktop! Backups are for weak IT, we use snapshots…Please share your best phrases to have fun, and share those “crazy moments” with a bit of humor!😂

What is the best compression or dedupe you have received with Veeam.Feel free to expand on what type of job, compression settings, type of VM (sql, app, web server etc). If it is a file server what type of data does it host? For SQL I can get up to 7x Dedupe and 4.5x Compression I have a few application servers around 20x deduplication in my environment as well. The highest application server I have with an internal DB hit 46.8x Dedupe and 1.9x compression which is pretty crazy. The full backup was 13GB on a pretty large VM haha. I have a few big file server 30+TB that get 4.7x dedupe and 1.7x compression for example. Pretty good to see 30TB shrunk down to 4TB or so. I also have some 30+TB VM’s that get 1.1 dedupe and 1.0 compression . All videos however.   

Hi,we are moving a lot of environments to Azure cloud and we already have 150 Blob storage containers configured to make the backups using Azure Backup. The problem is that they offer only 300 days of retention policy and i need more time for LTR and granular backups (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly) for compliance and governance purposes. As we are studying to move the backup workloads to VAB and VBR at azure, but we felt that this feature for blob storage container its missing in the VEEAM tools for Azure.This amount of blob storage container it is just the begining, because aplications moved to Azure will use their individual storage account, instead of using a centralized file server to persistent data.Thanks a lot and hope you guys help us with this request.

Hi colleagues,  I’m wondering, whether there is a solution to backup a machine with Veeam Agent to multiple HDD disks. Unfortunately, the available disk size is below the machine size, which means the backup would need to “overlap” to the 2nd disk. Is this somehow possible? BestManuel

I have already configured some backup jobs for SQL database. Backups go to dell datadomain. I would like to copy full backups to azure blob storage. How can I do it without adding performance tier to scale-out repository? Is it possible?

What is the most challenging thing you have done using Veeam, or solved with Veeam? For me it was the Veeam Lab as I have some very odd networking requirements and trying to solve why it would work but I couldn’t get the machines to talk was a challenge. Some others were wrapping my head around retention policies when I first started and Tape.  Now it’s all just day to day :) As for something challenging I have solved, it’s mostly internal stuff at my company such as our insane retention requirements and large data.  With Object storage I'll be able to archive to the cloud and also to tape (as per policy), delete data from production and retrieve it in 20 years if I am required.  This saves having to restore a full VM from Tape to get one file.  

Hi everyone! I would like to share with all of you, this fantastic site with a lot of useful virtual appliances and tools!Maybe most of you will already know it, but I want to expose it and put it on everybody's radar!BITNAMI by vmware! Every time I need to deploy something, specially when its in the Lab or for test / Dev, I look in here,I don't want to re-invent the wheel, if is already created, why don't use it instead of re-installing and dealing with issues and research. When I need to deploy a LAMP, WAMP, or any other application listed in here, they have a lot! I gram a .ova and deploy it on my virtual lab! Now they also cover Kubernetes, cloud providers, docker, and of course vmware!  Do you have any other place where you usually pick your applications / tools?Please share it to build a list of resources for all of us!I will try to catch them all and get them on a cool list! 😃 enjoy!

 It took two tries, but I completed the Veeam Certified Architect (VMCA) certification exam.  While taking it twice was not my ideal way to pass the exam, I found the newest version of the exam much easier to handle, including the setup and much better than the initial exam release for v1.  Below are my thoughts on the exam itself and things you can prepare before you book it. Training Requirements If you are new to Veeam exams, there is a requirement for taking the courses before you site the exams for both VMCE and VMCA.  While I had the VMCAv1 already, and I didn’t need to sit in the class, I did nonetheless.  I am thrilled I sat the course as it was a complete overhaul of the v1 course and a much better way to learn is primarily hands-on.   You can read my course review here -Veeam Certified Architect 2022 - Course ReviewFurther, each is now a “versioned” exam for each year - in this case, VMCA 2022, with versioning done on an annual basis.  Each exam will need to be independently

Since the introduction of NAS backup capability with v10 of Veeam Backup & Replication there have been many requests for tape support. But as we all know, Veeam’s NAS backup doesn’t support tape (yet?), neither as a primary nor as secondary (backup copy or archive) target.With v11 we got the new feature called “instant file share recovery” which lets us publish file shares directly from the backups previously created with NAS backup jobs. My colleague Uwe Groening recently came up with the idea to use these shares, published by instant file share recovery, as a source for file to tape jobs within Veeam. This way, it should be possible to create tape copies directly from existing file share backups. This makes a huge difference to other solutions that involve either reading data from the production share again or staging a restore on some (extra) storage prior to using “file to tape” from there.We discussed this idea in more detail and created a process (for a single NAS backup job)

has anyone used the VBR built in file explorer to move large amounts of data, talking over 300TB?If the transfer is interrupted, does it resume the file transfer?

Can someone please explain the relationship between this Community Hub and what’s now called Veeam R&D Forums? The email from there said “all of your existing forum posts will be counted towards your Veeam Legends score as soon as the corresponding integrations are put in place”. How will the two accounts be linked to do that?When I first logged in here, some saved credentials were in the username and password. Same username I use for the main website, so I clicked to log in, and it worked. But I use different credentials for the forum.And if my main website credentials worked here, are they actually linked? If I change the main website password, does that change it for here? 

I'm trying to recover files in my backup using console -> Restore guest files -> Microsoft Windows...and it is giving the following message:- Connection Problems: No connections can be made because the target machine has actively refused them.and then another window opens with the following error:- Mount wasn't foundUntil last month it was working normally. What can it be?

Interesting Scenario here.  I have a VERY isolated environment separate from my production environment.  The SAN is the only thing that shared between environments. No networking at all. Is there any license wizards in here who could tell me if this is supported, or if the following would be against the Veeam license rules?  In this isolated environment we don’t have Veeam.  We are in the process migrating all of those servers to our production environment , but I’d like to archive one to tape before hand to free up 50TBIf I were to do a storage snapshot of the VM’s volume from within Veeam (Same SAN) , I could then run an instant recovery to our production environment. While its running from the Storage Snapshot in our production environment, I’d like to do a VeeamZip, then export it to tape from the VeeamZip. It should be no different than exporting to OVF and importing it into production from vCenter which wouldn’t be against any license rules and it does save me moving 50TB 2 times

Happy Friday everyone! Today I want to trade ‘war stories’ of IT mishaps and experiences learned. Have you ever felt yourself psychic, that you could see something going horribly wrong, and it DID go horribly wrong? Maybe you had the overwhelming urge to say I told you so? Maybe you did tell them so and got promoted or fired! Lets hear the stories! My story that inspired this Fun Friday happened a fair amount of time ago, so it feels okay to discuss now. Customer was going through some financial difficulties, cash flow was reduced, survival mode engaged. Cut all the costs that you can find. The support contract for the backup server was due for renewal, this server was already 5 years old and with their financial forecast, a replacement was not on the table. We tried to be price sensitive and offered third party Next Business Day support, was as cheap as we could get. Customer asked if there was anything cheaper, we told them there wasn’t. Customer declined support renewal. I made a pe

On my esxi 7.0 cluster I’ve added a couple of VMs for testing. Having had B&R configured to backup entire hosts (with some VM exceptions) it obviously backed up these test VMs. I did not notice this change, since I’ve configured Veeam to not email me on successful backups.Over the next days I removed these VMs. By doing so, Veeam completed to produce successful backups but today by accident I’ve noticed that it adds a single line message of the form “XXXX is no longer processed by this job. Make sure this change is intentional.”Two questions:These last jobs were still successful. Therefore I’ve received no e-mail for them (even if I did, I’d tend to overlook content for jobs that ran without hitches). Would it be better to have this type of a job end with a warning exit code, instead of a success one? How can I avoid having this message in the next backups? Should I edit the job and, if so, edit it how exactly?
