Security vulnerabilities in VMware vCenter Server (09/2021)

I thought it would be good to share this here, although this is already covered on many news sites.Yesterday VMware did publish a Security Advisory regarding multiple vulnerabilities in vCenter Server. The most critical one "CVE-2021-22005” did receive a CVSSv3 score of 9.8 (of 10) and an attacker could take over the control just be uploading a file via port 443. Although vCenter shouldn’t be reachable from the WAN/internet, the vulnerabilities should still be seen as very critical; an inside attacker could already be waiting.All together there were 19 CVEs published and fixed by VMware. All currently supported vCenter Server releases are more or less affected:vCenter 7: <7.0 U2c: affected by all vulnerabilities → Patch to 7.0 U2d 7.0 U2c: “only affected” by the minor vulnerabilities → Patch to 7.0 U2d vCenter 6.7: all 6.7 releases are affected → patch to 6.7 U3o vCenter 6.5: “only affected” by the minor vulnerabilities → Patch to 6.5 U3q → the minior vulnerabilities are still cr

Update attatched object storage

Hi, is there a smart way to update attached s3 object storages. Not used in sobr(!). I am useing capa offloading to s3 on aws. in our Prodution environment (B&R Local). Thats working fine. I also attached the s3 on another Veeam B&R in VMC on AWS. I can see all backups once I attached the object storage in the repository view. Thats fine. I can do restores direct from s3 in vmc on aws. thats fine too. But ...I only do backup and offloading from B&R Local. Veeam B&R in VMC on AWS is only for restore purposes in our desaster environment. Unforunatly the attached s3 will not be update once B&R Local completet a new backup an offload. I can not rescan the object storage repository. The only way is to detach and do an import again. Thats working, its ok, but a more smart way to do a rescan during attatched s3 would be great. VSS Error with File to Tape Backup "Shadow copy provider vetoed the operation"

Hello community,I have an issue with a file to tape backup in combination with the usage of VSS.I have to copy the files of the RMAN Backups to tape. The backup files of the RMAN and SAP plugins are not recognized as backup Jobs with the tape jobs, so I have to copy them as files and not as jobs.The RMAN backups are running 24/7 - so there are some open files every time the copy job runs. And therefore I have activated the usage of VSS in the file to tape backup job.Every time the job runs an VSS error is given - "Shadow copy provider vetoed the operation"I did not find useful information to this error.Does anyone have some idea why VSS is not working properly? A reboot did not help. On the drive is enough free space (around 62,5 TB free of 105 TB total).

When people think of encrypted backups, the usual first thoughts are around portable backups such as tape and USB or backups outside of your trust domain such as cloud storage.This is a great starting point, and if you’re not currently encrypting these I urge you to do so as these are normally your highest risk backups. Can we get a Raspbian 64-bit Backup Client?

I added a Raspberry Pi to my test lab.   I just installed their new Raspberry Pi 64-bit OS released in May 2021.    I love VEEAM Community Backup.   I can’t install the Linux client on the Raspberry Pi OS.   It would be great, if they made a client for them.   Many corporations are developing IoT devices based on the Pi.   Here is a picture of my Pi / Arduino test lab.   My website is https://mc.scsiraidguru.com/ I wished they had a $99 Pro version that home users could buy with no limitations.   I could get many users to buy it.

How to archive in tapes the Veeam Office 365 repository

Hello, I understand that there are no a tape backup option directly in VOB, however we can use VBR, so I would like to know what is the “best practice” to archive every year in tapes.Our initial full backup took 7TB, then, because we configured 7 years of retention, we’ll keep all the messages and we’ll have around 7TB more per year, so how we can manage that in tapes if we don’t want to buy more disk? Thanks in advance, Omar De Souza.

HiIn the 2 days during VEEAMON 2021, there was often the question from new members why to choose Veeam over other competitors…Therefore my own top-15. There will be more reasons, but I think it will cover a lot of the reasons and I don’t think someone has to hesitate anymore ;-) PortabilitySomething I like very hard! All necessary information is built into the backup-file.You are not dependent of your backup-server to restore something. In case of emergency of disaster it’s just sufficient to install VBR Community Edition (free), import your backup-file and restore. Veeam on VMware Cloud on AWS -> vCenter / Host Permissions

Hi,I have problems, restoreing VMs from s3 to vmware cloud on aws. I get a permission denied error.s3 and vCenter is added probably in veeam b&r thats insalled on VMC too. I can see my backups in Veeam B&R in VMware Cloud on AWS. I also can see the virtual machines in VMware Cloud on AWS. But I cannot give crendentials to the vSphere hosts, because it is not allowed in VMC. I guess that is the reason for my problem? What can I do, to use Veeam in VMC to backup and restore my VMs?

VMCA 2022 Released!

Afternoon everyone! I just found out that Veeam have released the VMCA 2022 course and exam. We’ve had a few discussions around this exam within the community as originally Veeam were intending for everyone to take the VMCA 2022 course prior to sitting the exam, however between then and now they’ve changed it. I checked my portal this morning and it showed the “Step 1. Attend a training course” as ticked. I checked with my account manager that this was intentional and they confirmed it’s no longer mandatory to redo the course if you’ve already got a VMCA v1.To find out more simply go to: Get Veeam Certified Now! and then click on the “Veeam Certified Architect” tab. FAQs:I took the VMCA v1 training course but never took the exam, what should I do? The VMCA v1 is expected to retire on 31st December 2021, either sit the exam or take the VMCA 2022 training course and work on that instead. Should I take the training course? Of course, it’s not always cost-effective for some people to take

Questions on veeam backup with nutanix & veeam repository

Hey guys, I have two questions For veeam backup for nutanix, after I install a nutanix plugin on VBR will veeam setup a nutanix proxy VM or should we setup the proxy VM in the nutanix cluster? If VBR backups to a repository, later VBR crashes and I deploy another VBR and add the repository which has the backups stored, will this new VBR able to access or see the backups stored?

Our QC has completed qualification of the following new storage offerings and firmware versions and we've declared their official support right with the current Veeam Backup & Replication version 11:• HPE Alletra 9000 which is a new storage based on Primera OS is now fully supported for storage snapshot integration functionality. Until the UI has been updated, register it as an HPE 3PAR storage. Note this does not include Alletra 6000 which despite the similar name is based on a different OS. We have some lab time scheduled with HPE at the end of this month, after which we should have a good idea of the work required (if any) and so the target release for Alletra 6000 support.• HPE Primera with Primera OS 4.3 is now supported for storage

Best log to check for Cloud Gateway errors

Good morning, everyone! Quick question. I have a copyjob that is throwing random “No Cloud Gateways available” errors. The odd thing is, it’s the only server that is having the issue and the our cloud connect server is fine. I am not quite sure what is happening between the cloud connect server and that backup server, but I want to get to the bottom of it! What would be the best Veeam log to check for info on that? I can run through the Windows Event Viewer, but I also want to see if any of the Veeam logs can shed some light. You all rock! Thank you so much for being great!

VMware SD card/USB Support is going away!

To quote Gostev: Friends don’t let friends use anything but enterprise grade hardware RAID controllers with Battery Backed Write Cache. Well, now we’ve got another phrase we need to add: Friends don’t let friends use SD/USB for their VMware environments. VMware have just updated their KB regarding SD/USB support. Full details are here however the key takeaways are: VMware strongly advises that you move away completely from using SD card/USB as a boot device option on any future server hardware. Starting from the next major vSphere release, SD cards/USB media as a standalone boot device will not be supported. SD cards cannot be used to store the OSDATA partition, and an additional persistent device will be required. SD cards can continue to be used for the bootbank partition provided that a separate persistent local device to store the OSDATA partition (32GB minimum, 128GB recommended) is available in the host Preferably, the SD cards should be replaced with an M.2 or another local pers

Veeam Sizing for Repository Needed

Hello Veeam, I would like to ask regarding on how to size repository needed for Veeam via http://rps.dewin.me/If customer gave the data size that needs to backup which is 28tb and backup policy must have 2YR retention and the sched will be 24months Full, 4 weekly Full and 7 Daily incremental.So technically I will create a "Backup Copy Job GFS” in Dewin, and will enter 24 in Months the total for that one is 219.2TB, will create another one for weekly will enter 4 in Weekly and total of 44.2 TB, and last for Daily incremental will select "Forever Incremental” and retention will be 7 and total of 31.89 TB. For all type of backup i checked the Refs/XFS, 10% conservative for change rate, and 50% on data left after reduction. So it means i will add the total for all and that is equivalent to 295.29 TB of storage. So i need a total of 295.29 TB with 2YR retention? I think is is too much give that Veeam have dedup/compress features, if you will size can you share the details as well. Thanks

Datastore Usage Trend

I am trying to find or build a report that will provide a line chart for each datastore trending over the last 4 - 6 months.I looked at the report - Datastore Space Usage History - the data appears to be there under the individual datastore headings, but it appears that will be a significant amount of data manipulation to make it work.Is it possible to get the data in a .csv format?Does anyone else have a similar need and has addressed it?Thanks in advance.

Veeam B&R HA

Hi Team,I going to deployment a POC for one of my customer.Customer wants to HA cluster Veeam B&R for his DC and DR location. If DC site Veeam B&R goes down then DR site take over the Veeam B&R. in this time need to ensure that no backup job will be fail. As per I know and below link Veeam does not support HA Cluster. Ha for Veeam B&R server and Ha for veeam one - Veeam R&D Forums any one can help me on this issue?if i go with always on SQL cluster is it work ? any one do any R&D on this? Thanks in advance……………

Happy Friday, Veeam Community! Since @MicoolPaul is on Majorca enjoying sunshine and beach, I am on a mission to back him up with the regular Fun Friday discussion!  What's the worst reason for an outage you've ever had and how badly did it impact you? Here’s story that @MicoolPaul shared with us:“When I was internal IT, we had a summer where we kept suffering power outages at our main building, with people keep getting stuck in the lift! One day we had a bad outage, but it was only partially an outage, apparently two of our three phases were dead! So we had a few random plugs around the office that still worked. To get things back up and running we managed to ignore all health & safety and ran a massive extension lead from a working socket to power our UPS and our entire rack! (it stunk of hot metal and I wouldn't leave it unattended for even a second!).Eventually we found out that the building management had replaced all of the fuses for the building with ones that were HUNDREDS

HPE is launching LTO-9 Ultrium data cartridges

HPE announced their launch of LTO-9 Ultrium data cartridges.Could not find much more information about it. No release-dates of LTO-9 drives. As discussed earlier here with LTO-9 drives does not provide double-capacity compared to previous version.
