VeeamON 2023: A Community Recap

VeeamON 2023 has officially concluded! 🎉The biggest event for data recovery experts brought together community members online and in Miami. Veeam Legends and Vanguards were given the opportunity to travel and join Veeam in-person this year for VeeamON. Over 60 Legends/Vanguards from across the world traveled to Miami this year, as well as 6 VeeaMVPs who were also present in Miami. Install Veeam B&R on second site. License?

Hello,As I’m doing Backup Copy Jobs to second location I think it would be good to have Veeam B&R on that site also if somethings happens with primary location.For me I would need advice on licensing the second Veeam B&R.My primary Veeam B&R is on the primary site so If everything goes down there is no way to restore VM’s without it.

Veeam Office 365 Snapshot-based retention

Hi, I would like to confirm if the Snapshot-based retention keep the full backup and only delete the incremental snapshots according to the retention policy (years, days, etc.). I need to do an incremental backup job like VBR, to keep only 2 months of incrementals. Thanks, Omar De Souza.

im trying to open veeam backup and replication console i update to latest version (12), and the program wont start it close at splash window. i had the 11 version and happnened again. i went trough a network problem in my job and some of the virtual machine get damage. i want to restore it but need help to open veeam backup and replication.

Veeam B&R does not backup over FC switch

Hello,We have three ESXi servers connected to our Nimble storage using a Brocade Fibre Channel switch, each ESXi server connects to Nimble storage with individual zone as: ESXi1_Nimble, ESXi2_Nimble, ESXi3_Nimbe.A few months after this configuration was done, we added a physical server for Veeam B&R v12 as backup server and repository, which is also a backup proxy server. This is connected to the same FC switch and I created zone between the Veeam B&R server and the Nimble storage as:  VeeamBR_NimbleAnd most recently, we added a HPE tape library to this mix for GFS tape backups. Added the library to the FC switch and created a zone between VeeamBR_HPETapeDrive. Each night, the Veeam B&R server runs backup jobs then stores into its local repository (D: drive). Then it runs backup to tape, which writes from the Veeam B&R backup repository into tape drive. Configure AMI / timeout / retries for Veeam Proxy Appliance in AWS

Hello,I’m trying to restore a Veeam backup from Capacity tier (S3) into an EC2 instance in AWS.However, I’m facing a problem with the proxy instance. Once I start the restore process, the proxy instance is created, but after abou a minute I get an error:“Preparing proxy appliance VM Error: The destination would not be a correct SSH server.”I tried ssh to the proxy, but the connection gets rejected, while connections to other hosts in the same subnet with the same security groups are successful.So I manually created an instance using the same settings Veeam uses for the proxy, same subnet, security groups, AMI, and found that connections are successful, but only a few minutes after instance creation with that particular AMI Veeam chooses for the proxy instance (aws-parallelcluster-3.1.4-ubuntu-2004-lts).Now, the question is, is there a way to configure the AMI, the timeout or the number of SSH retries for the proxy appliance?Thanks!!!

Veeam backup for Azure failed to backup a VM to Azure repository

Hi, we have Veeam backup for Azure all setup and running and its been a couple of months. We have private network deployment with private endpoints in our environment with premium service bus and all subnets are allowed to access this service bus. We have 5 backup policies in total, 3 of them have been running fine but 2 of the jobs (with our file servers), the snapshots are running fine but the backup policy is getting failed after 4/5 hours of the session run with an error :Failed to perform backup of vm1 to Production Backups Repo 1. Worker VBA-5bf0973a-8e2c-4dda-ba63-28814324c1bb: getting of the job status failed (trace ID: b8b3fb4e-c7f0-4f86-aa22-4f2122f45b00)We have noticed that when the backup policy session starts, it backs up the data all the way to 60% percent and then it stuck for a very long time before erroring out this message. We have raised a support case with Veeam and they said they will need to check with their R&D team, as we have the same settings for all jobs

File to tape catalog migration

Hello, we are using file-to-tape jobs to archive old files like pst files. After running the file-to-tape job we delete the files on the file-system.In the Veeam B&R console you can find the archived files in the “files” section and you can search the file name. This information is stored in the tape catalog data and you can find this by double clicking on the tapes, too. So this information is saved in the database, but how can i migrate or export/import this information to another veeam server? I am currently migrating some smaller Veeam server together to one single management server and the smaller server will be used as backup proxy. (without db) So on a new Veeam server i will get this information only by doing a inventory and catalog of all the old tapes.Is there another solution for this ?

Email notification has stopped working

Test Mails via Veeam Windows free agent 5.0 work fine!However notification after backup do never arrive anywhere.Checked and found out, that other users encouter the same problem.Problem started after upgrading or installing Version 5.Hope to get a solution soon.RegardsMichael

Veeam file browser hangs

Hi,From a backup I want to try and restore a file. We go through the process in Veeam to browse and restore files but when the file browser pop up window appears it never displays any files from the AWS instance. I left it for a long time and it’s not go that much on the instance. Any idea why this doesn’t work?As an aside, we also can’t restore any instances either so wondered if anyone would know of a paid service we are able to use to help check Veeam is set up for our AWS account correctly. I see snapshots but not much use without being able to restore them.Many thanks,Bob

S3 repository overflow

HiWe running an VBR11.0.1.1261 using SOBR with an QNAP as capacity tier. QNAP is supported S3 repository by Veeam and Veeam is partnering with QNAP. Also Immutable option should work as stated in https://www.veeam.com/sys469.After running while this setup we start getting strange errors.  Error deleting multiple items from SOBR invalid URI - which refers to cleanup operations on the S3 repository base on retention policy. VBR runs this operations in regular intervals.  In Veeam One - Data Protection View we get error type [v] (never seen before) and a Knowledge information that stats: S3 object storage added to VBR as repository may face overflow with small metadata file of 0 kb size. Cause: malfunction in object delete algorithm. Resolution - contact support to get a private fix. To get backups to SOBR working again we to delete objects from QNAP using qnap utilities. Now we try to synchronise SOBR with VBR DB but it takes forever. Has somebody came across this situation with AWS S3 o

Veeam SQL Database server local or External question.

I have used both. Internal SQL express, external SQL server, SQL server in an Always ON cluster replicated to our DR site. All 3 worked great, I have never noticed a difference in performance, and never hit the limits.Here are my questions about SQL and Veeam.Has anyone here ever hit the SQL Express limits?Has anyone here ever installed a full blown SQL instance on their Veeam server? Did this make much difference than an external SQL server?We have a DB admin, so using external is pretty easy for me, but I really have no clue when I'll outgrow SQL Express.  I suppose I can change it up in V12 as well with the new option.

With multiple reports what seems to be about every week of ransomware attacks, especially the recent big one here in the States on the Colonial Pipeline, I thought it would be a great idea to start a continuing discussion on how best to protect your environment from ransomware. What are ways you can implement ‘security-in-layers’ and configure your backup environment to provide you and your company the best possible recovery scenario in the event of a ransomware attack?I will not provide an exhaustive list, but will instead just begin this discussion off with a few configuration options for your BU/DR environment which can help protect you in the event of a ransomware attack. First, if you’re not aware, Veeam has transitioned from its “3-2-1 rule” to a more wholistic “3-2-1-1-0 rule” > 3 copies of data, 2 media types, 1 copy offsite, 1 copy immutable/airgapped, and 0 recoverability errors. one veeam license with multiple console

I would like to ask about the term of veeam license, if i consider having 2 console, one in site A and one insite B with vm around 10 in each site, so it means that i have to buy 2 bundles of veeam licenses.Then the question is, if i were buying 2 bundle, will i get only 1 license file  or 2 license files ?

Error: File Does Not Exist. Failed to open storage for read access.

Hi All,I’m receiving this error on within Veeam running a Backup Copy to a QNAP. I’m a novice at Veeam so any help is appreciated. Looking in the C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup folder, which log file in particular will detail where exactly this error is happening? Below is the summary of the Failed ‘Backup Copy to QNAP’ job.

Hi everybody!Im writing this question more like as curiosity and to re-think in my home lab, I've been using a HP 360 Gen8 with 128GB Ram and 2TB SSD with vsphere 7 to host my full home lab: 3 hosts Vsphere cluster, TrueNas for NAS & NFS storage, and pfsense for routing and firewalling, and a Windows Server 2016 with Veeam B&R.Now Im thinking in something more “electricity friendly” , but I would love to read some setups and ideas from all of you, and maybe mixing them up a bit we can get with the SUPER HOME LAB!thnx!read you in the comments!

Backup job not running anymore

Hello everyone, I have run into an issue that I can’t seem to figure out.  I have my system set up to backup on a daily basis but a backup has not run in the last 12 days.  The only change made 12 days ago was a reinstall of Slack on my laptop.  I have rebooted my system multiple times since that date along with performing an uninstall and reinstall of the agent.  I am including a screenshot of the Windows agent and my system uptime below.I am not sure why there would be a job still running at this point and could really use some help.  I am using Veeam B&R 11.5 CE and my laptop is running Windows 11 22H2.  I know that my version of Windows technically is not supported until B&R 12 with Windows agent version 6 but they have not been released yet.  I do know that the only thing that will not work with my version of Windows is the backup recovery media creation.  Everything else should work according to Dimitry Popov in the following post.Dimitry Popov's post

Will using jumbo frames help VBR 12 performance?

In my environment, all of my switches and all of my virtualization hosts support jumbo frames. as well as the Data Domain that is my storage infrastructure.  However, my VBR environment - 3VMs (the VBR server, 1 proxy, and 1 managed server used to mount restores) and the physical server that attaches to the tape library are not currently set to use jumbo frames. I am wondering if setting them to use jumbo frames would help, improve performance, reduce bottlenecks?I can’t imagine that it would hurt, right?Anyone using jumbo frames? What is your experience?
