Veeam Backup & Replication very slow to start backup

Hi, I am testing Backup and Replication Community Edition and have a very simple test environment consisting of a single Windows Server 2022 with one boot SSD, two HDD’s and a third HDD which is my dedicated Backup Repository.  When I start the job, it take over an hour before it will begin to process/transfer data.  Is this normal or is stuck waiting for something before it can start the backup?  The server really has no load on it as it is a test machine (physical, not virtual).  Below is a screenshot: Any thoughts would be much appreciated.  Thank you!

Gotcha's for using Linux Hardened Repository as Primary Backup Repo

I swear I’ve seen some posts about this but can’t find them.  I haven’t dipped into the Linux Hardened repo’s with immutability yet, but one of my engineers recently set one up for a client, but as a copy repository.  I’m putting together a proposal to replace our internal Synology NAS that is our primary repository with a Dell PowerEdge R550 with a fair amount of local space (8x 8TB disks in RAID 5 or 6) connected via 10Gb or 25Gb links. Backup data is currently copied to a SOBR at a remote site that is using a Synology NAS and Wasabi for immutable object storage.  Right now the primary site is keeping 30 days of Forward Incrementals with Active Full’s with no GFS retention, but I plan to ramp up some more retention locally at some point as I ran into space issues a few months back and ended up doing all of my GFS work on the copy repo at the remote site for the time being.Any gotcha’s I should be looking out for this sort of configuration - primarily in regard to using a hardened box

DR Architecture bests pratices

Hi everyone,Hi have a question concerning veeam disaster recovery seting up with veeamCurrently I have my full infra on my production site.For my disaster recovery project, I plan to move my NAS which is used as SMB Repo, I  plan to also move my backup + proxy server using for replica job.After that i will install veeam disaster recovery orchestrator on the DR site and manage my disaster recovery plan with it.I my architecture I don't a vcenter server in my DR site. I plan to use the main site vcenter server to manage DR Esxi (2 hypervisors).Is it recommended to do it like this?I would like to know if not having a dedicated vcenter for my hypervisors on the PRA site could be a problem.I would like to have comments and recommendations on this architecture. And also, your advice on the best practicesBellow my architecture your answer would be very useful for me :)Thanks Herbi

No logon servers

Hi All,I have restored two servers using veeam backup and replication. Both servers restored successfully but to a different host. However, when I login I get “No logon servers avaialble . . . “ error, I am also unable to login using the local administrator account.The Network is pointing to the server network on the new host and I don’t see any errors or anything glaringly obvious. I had Application-aware processing enabled on one of the restored server jobs but not the other. But I am unable to login to any of them.I did restore a server last week without any issues and was able to login to the Domain without any issues. Can someone offer any advice as I need to move servers off this host and the only way to do this is by Veeam backup. I have no option to migrate via vmotion or directly via the Hosts themselves.Thanks in anticipation.

Storage full but does not match VEEAM used.....??

Hi All Had a case open with VEEAM and NetApp neither of which is going anywhere pretty quickly, so will throw it out there and see if anyone has any ideas.We have a large estate broken down in to areas which mirror the configuration of each other so a nice lot of reference points.NetApp 16Tb LUN and 16TB volume mapped to a Veeam backup server.The client wrote a lot of data to this back up location and took it offline. So we cleared snapshots down and brought it back online. When the mapped drive was browsed it could be seen there was a lot (TBs + TBs) of “Dead” VM backup files VEEAM advised these could be deleted which they were.However the adjustment hasnt carried through to the storage end VEEAM UI thinks there is 11.9 Tb free NetApp only 2 Tb ** After Storage Snapshot removal Have stopped the jobs reset the storage passwordRe-scanned the storageRe-scanned the appropriate repository.Any thoughts at all ..? P

Can anyone tell why veeam doesn't provide database backup such as MSSQL? There are many backup softwares that can backup only database so how is veeam different from them?

Veeam Backup and Replication of Azure VM and Repository is Azure blob or Azure SMB Share

Hi, can you help me figure out this scenario.Customer have a license for VBR version 11 with few instances.They want to backup their Azure VM’s and store the backups on their Azure blob or Azure Smb file share. So the plan is  to spin a vm instance on their azure,  install VBR on that new VM instance, add the license, add their VMs as managed server on the VBR, configure target backup repository as Network attached storage (SMB) or configure target backup repository as (Object Storage - Azure Blob).Note: License is for VBR version 11 and not for Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure.Now the question is, what is the proper approach for this scenario?Can we add each vm instance from their azure as managed servers to be able to backup it up or do we have to connect through Veeam backup Microsoft azure appliance? (Note: Customer does not want to deploy Azure Appliance)Is adding Azure SMB share as backup repository supported? Can I directly point my backup to my target Azure Blob repository?

Backup Copys to Synology "Stg.CheckMetadataCorrupt"

Good morning; I have been having some problems with our current setup, I'm ok with smashing my hardware and starting over, but I want something I know will work! I am having issues with a backup copy job moving our backups off-site to another location.We have Veeam installed on a server in our primary data center, this server has 64TB, and all our primary backups are stored here. We have a backup copy job that pushes backups off-site over a VPN to Synology DS416play. At first, we set this up as an NFS share connected to a repository on the Veeam server; doing it, this was very slow, and backups failed. Then we changed this to an SMB share connected to a repository on the Veeam server; again, this was slow, and jobs would never finish.Then we created a LUN and attached the Veeam server with ISCSI creating a drive letter and pointing the repository to this. The ISCSI method increased the speed jobs were flying and working! But over time, we started getting "Stg.CheckMetadataCorrupt" erro

Is upgrading from 9.5 still possible?

Hey guys,  i run a small server in a NGO, our Veeam is still in version 9.0 without support since 2019. I’ve recently run into a backup problem, and our support IT company, told me that i should get a newer version of Veeam, and install in a new  VM(5th).I asked if it was possible to upgrade, which they said, no, and now Veeam only does subscriptions, and proceeded to give me a budget for 3 year. From what i read perpetual is still available, just more expensive than subscriptions, but what about upgrading? Could i not install 9.5 on a new VM, renew and upgrade up to 12? What do you think?

Optimal use of server network cards

Hi, Veeam newbie here looking for recommendation on how to make optimal use of our network cards. Our servers are HP DL365s with 4 x 1Gbps on a single module and 2 x 10Gbps on a separat module. The plan is to follow the VMwar Best Practice document to allocate 2 x 1Gbps for Management and vMotion, 2 x 1Gbps for the VM traffic (VLAN 111) and 1 x 10Gbps for storage traffic to our NetApp (from where we mount the VMDKs via NFS). Our Veeam BaR server and proxy are both VMs and not physical and we have a separate VLAN for backup and replication (VLAN 333), and for storage (VLAN 222). A colleague says we are over-engineering this and backup traffic should just flow thru the same storage network. Any suggestions?

Recovering a backup virtual machines from a dead host

Hi all,Recently, my ESXi home lab host died, taking with it the main data store that contained all my working VMs including a Veeam Replication and Backup Community Edition VM. This VM was backed up several of the VMs on the ESXi host to an alternate location, so perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel.In the first instance, I will need to create a new VM for Veeam, then reinstall Replication and Backup and re-attach the backup store. However, when looking at https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/importing_backups.html?ver=110, there is a pre-requisite requirement that states:The server from which you plan to import backups must be added to the backup infrastructure. Otherwise you will not be able to access backup files. Does this mean I need to re-create to lost VMs in ESXi first, before I can import any backups? Do then need to be specific configurations that match the original VM (such as vHDDs)? Do they even need be fully recreated with OS? Of is it simply that I

Manually remove Veeam components from HV host

Further to my earlier question about backing up between networks, I tried to start removing the Veeam components that are installed on the Hyper-V hosts.  One of the hosts is being a real pig and will not remove with error ‘Connecting to installer service Error: The RPC server is unavailable.’  On checking, the Veeam Installer Service is not running and will not start with an errors 7009 and 7000.  Trying to delete the service as per KB2263: Failed to start service ‘VeeamDeploySvc’ - The system cannot find the file specified. does not work either!  Any suggestions on how to manually remove Veeam components from this host? Slight curveball is that it is Windows Server Core 2019.Thanks!

VSPC v7 upgrade issue

Hi guys, I’ve just updated Veeam Service Provider Console from v6 to v7 and I got a communication error during Web UI component upgrade.Web UI is installed on a different server and subnet than VSPC server component.I checked the open ports and they were correct.By opening all the ports between the Web UI and the server the installation went fine.Has this ever happened to you? is it possible that the documentation is wrong and something has changed from v6?Unfortunately, I did not check whether it used any other port than the one in the documentation. Problems backup Suse Linux

Great Day To all, I need your help. I’m desperate with configuration Backup on suse linux.  I can´t make one Backup with out error. Now i have 2. 1º Warning: Cannot find EFI boot manager entry for EFI System Partition GUID [{fd710814-4267-4121-bc79-7909e224d025}].  2º Could not create btrfs on /dev/loop3   My Boot is EFI, i don't know what i'm doing wrongCan You help me? i use Veeam B&R. The best regards to all.

VMware SD card/USB Support is going away!

To quote Gostev: Friends don’t let friends use anything but enterprise grade hardware RAID controllers with Battery Backed Write Cache. Well, now we’ve got another phrase we need to add: Friends don’t let friends use SD/USB for their VMware environments. VMware have just updated their KB regarding SD/USB support. Full details are here however the key takeaways are: VMware strongly advises that you move away completely from using SD card/USB as a boot device option on any future server hardware. Starting from the next major vSphere release, SD cards/USB media as a standalone boot device will not be supported. SD cards cannot be used to store the OSDATA partition, and an additional persistent device will be required. Hello veeam community! As we know, the VMCE v12 is comming soom and with that a new exam with new topics including building backup capabilities, restoring from backup and advanced repository functionalities, etc are coming too. But at this moment my questions is about VMCE 2021.Do you know how long we can still book the exam VMCE 2021?Do you think it's still worth trying to pass VMCE 2021 or its better wait for v12 exam?

SureBackup Lite (Scan Backup) coming to VBN AHV 5.1 with VDP 12.1.

A much awaited feature request is coming to Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 5.1. This will require Veeam Backup and Replication 12.1. It is the ability to scan backups with SureBackup. Fun Friday: Will you be moving to VMware vSphere 7.x now?

Morning all,Happy Friday!As per @victorwu’s post, vSphere 7.0 U3c is now rereleased!I’m not here to kick them when they’re down, but VMware didn’t have the best of times with vSphere 7.0, but after their divorce from Dell EMC and the subsequent pulling of vSphere 7.0U3c for quality concerns, will this release finally be worthy of the VMware name? So, my question to you all. vSphere 6.5/6.7 are end of life later this year, so if you’re still on 6.5/6.7, will this release make you look at upgrading? Or are you still unsure and want to hold out until nearer the EOL? Share your thoughts!

How to setup Veeam Backup for multiple locations with Cloud Storage

Hello to all,I would need advices from you guys on how to approach to this setup the best way possible.We have two locations. Both locations have 64TB Synology NAS and also on one side we have one additional NAS for air-gapped solutoin. Now we would like to implement cloud storage and want to ask you guys what would be the best solution in configuration of this scenario.Scale-out repository or similar.At the moment we are doing backups on the one location (Vienna, Austria) and doing Backup Copy Jobs via WAN Acceleration to other location (Novi Sad, Serbia)Would like to configure it to best practices and in the most secured way possible.

What kind of compression is used for VEEAM backups?

I’m new to Veeam and I really like how easy it is to create scheduled backups and to retrieve individual files.Does anyone know what kind of compression Veeam uses when they create either increment or full backups?  Thanks, Steve

12.1 Malware Detection

I love this feature but with the thousands of file types I have I get a ton of false positives.Is there anyway to customize this “per server” with each file type? or disable for some servers/folders etc?When I mark a job as clean, it seems to find the files on the next job. I thought that it should assume those files to be ok going forward.
