Ransomware Detection: Entropy with Machine Learning and AI

As announced in VeeamON 2023, Veeam is working to improve the ransomware detection capabilities in two ways:Comparing guest file system indexes and looking for typical traces of malware. AI/ML to perform an in-line entropy analysis of the data stream on backup proxies to detect previously unencrypted data becoming encrypted.Some Ransomware detection techniques exist, but many have a poor detection rate. They also suffer from having high false positive rates, where they flag benign programs as malicious, and false-negative rates, and thus fail to identify malicious programs.The same applies to files where obfuscation techniques has been used by ransomware in an attempt to avoid signature detection. One of the most common techniques used is a CRC, which involves analysis of the value and position of a data group.On the other hand, detection techniques like Behavioral and Dynamic analysis must collect significant amounts of information. How to make backup in 2 servers

Hello, I have a question.I have a scenario with a server, it has Veeam Backup Community installed and makes copies locally.I would like to add an external copy on a server that is now deprecated, and I would like to use for copies.I have tried to get Veeam Backup Agent for Windows to be recognized on both servers, but it is only recognized by one, the one doing the installation.Is it possible to make copies of the same server from two Veeam Backup servers?Thank you all.

Veeam and Tape III - Restore of Backup Job Files from Tape which were backed up with a File-to-Tape Job

This is the description of an unusual scenario where Backup Job Files (.vbk and .vib Files) are backed up with a File-to-Tape Job instead a Backup-to-Tape Job. This has several disadvantages, e.g., you must know on which tape your files you want to restore are residing. You cannot find your tape backups under the backups section in the “Home” view of console and many more…OK, now have a look how we get these files back from tape.See the results of the File-to-Tape job and find the tape number the files reside on. If you don’t know the tape, read further, and use the search function ( Note: the warning in the screenshot can be ignored. The filesystem is too big for VSS Snapshots, I have forgotten to switch the VSS snapshots off for this test backup job.).Then go in the Veeam Console to the “Tape Infrastructure” section. Either go to the media pool where the affected tape is in or look for it in the Media section of your tape library.Right click on the tape and select “Restore Content”.

Vsphere & VSAN 8, enjoy snapshot speed for backup

Hello,For those who missed the information, there is a new snapshot mode for VSAN in vsphere 8. It looks promising for speed specially on large scale infra with vsan, it will obvisously reduce the time needed for snapshot processing on the backup jobs.Scalable, High-Performance Native Snapshots in the vSAN Express Storage Architecture | VMwareCan’t wait to test it in production to compare real number from the field!If anyone already tested it, i will curious to have a feedback.

Migrate VM from hyper-V to VMware using VEEAM 10 Instant recovery

The VMware Converter has failed to convert correctly the virtual disk.- Convert task success.- hd1 size error (vShepere vCenter : 0 / no disk detected (vSphere ESX, General View) / hd1 8 GB (Edit Settings ESX). NB : VMDK= 33 GB, Thick provisionning.As said by “https://hyper-converged.com/2020/03/06/migrate-vm-from-hyper-v-to-vmware-with-veeam-v10/”Veeam 10 can migrate a VM from Hyper-V to VM-ware. Does anyone had this issue and had fixed it with “Instant VM Recovery” of VEEAM 10 ?Is a VEEAM Licence for VMware and for Hyper-V needed ?

And… why not?I’m not going into the lengthy and exhausting discussion of why you should take care of your data, even if it’s stored in something unbreakable like “the cloud”, at least not in this post. I would like to focus on one of the features of the new Veeam Backup for Office 365 v4, which was released just the other day. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v6a Released

Veeam have today released the long-awaited update to Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 (VB365), v6a.This release has been overshadowed by Microsoft’s controversial changes being made to the Teams backup process, forcing vendors such as Veeam to cease using EWS as a mechanism to backup Teams data, instead insisting on the use of the Teams Graph API. Why is this controversial? Because the Teams Graph API is billable per query. You can read more about this in my full blog post here.There are two key notes I’d like to highlight on this v6a release: Permissions Changelog Veeam are now including a permissions changelog for the Azure AD Application, vs the v6 release. This contains any newly required permissions, changed permissions or removed permissions, as well as describing the usage of these permissions. Restore Most Recent SQL Database From Backup Job

Not too long ago I had a customer who only had a Standard license which meant he didn’t have access to SureBackup, but had a need to validate a highly critical SQL database’s backups on a near daily basis. I figured it wouldn’t be too hard to write up a PS script that’d take some basic information about the source job name and database and where it needed to be restored and quickly sort by most recent and selecting it and kicking off the restore. That way he could just fire up the script when necessary. He ended up setting up a scheduled task where each day his DBAs would have the previous day’s backup restored next to the production database and they could do whatever verifications they needed. Easy peasy!Note: Tested and working in v10 & v11 (Should work just fine in v9.x as well, but not tested)<### Un-comment to enable debug output when troubleshooting script ###>#$DebugPreference = "Continue"<### Included for backward compatibility for servers still running pre-v10. #

Restore to EC2 - encrypted snapshot as input is not supported

I’m trying to restore backups from my S3 object storage as EC2 instances in AWS. I’m receiving this error after the EBS snapshot is created:Importing VM Error: Failed to import machine to Amazon EC2: Using an encrypted snapshot as input is not supportedThe reason for this is the “Always encrypt new EBS volumes” setting, which unfortunately is mandatory in my company.Is there a way to work around this?

optimise the backup performance in SMB shares

Hi Guys,Any best practice while doing backup of Veeam Agent for Windows on SMB shares? so that we get better performance?We are using shared folder option in Veeam agent due to fact that we do not have server in that location.Around 4 to 5 users in that location and does not make sense to have dedicated server.  Only device present in the location is Synology NAS. Takes around 45 min to complete backup.Any possible option to optimise the performance ?

Cloud Credentials Expired

I was trying to restore an on-premise VM into Azure, which I had done many times before, and I got this error:"Failed to process request: (Unauthorized). AADSTS7000215: Invalid client secret provided. Ensure the secret being sent in the request is the client secret value, not the client secret ID, for a secret added to app ..." I thought there was something wrong with our Veeam Azure appliance, so inside of Veeam I tried to Edit the appliance or Rescan the appliance, and I kept getting a “Value cannot be null” error.I opened a ticket with Veeam support and here is what I learned:The Veeam Azure appliance has nothing to do with a restore from on-prem to Azure.  That is used for running Azure backups and for performing a backup copy from Azure to on-prem. In Veeam, go to Manage Cloud Credentials and edit your accounts.  I think they need to be edited once a year so that you can confirm your username and password again.  You can see the middle account I just edited and the bottom account

Veeam Backup & Replication: NAS ‘Backup Proxies are Offline or Outdated’ incorrect error message

 Hi,I had a really strange error that was causing myself some issues recently, so I thought I would share the results.I was protecting a few NetApp ONTAP systems, integrated with Veeam as NAS Filers. And when I was trying to protect one of the NAS Filers, all the SMB shares were working successfully, but the NFS shares were not.What was worse though, I would always get an error that made no sense. If I reviewed the error message for my NFS logs I’d get the error that ‘All backup proxies are offline or outdated’, and then if I browsed into the Veeam logs, there were no tasks logs even being created for the failing shares. If I dug into the logs for the parent job, I could see this error I mentioned above, plus that no scale-out repository extents were available. This struck me as very confusing, as the SVMs contained both NFS shares, and SMB shares, all SMB shares were protected fine.I checked firstly that I had configured the NAS element of the NetApp integration to support NFS and tha

SQL Server 2019 – TDE DB Recovery Errors, Log Shipping & CU16

Microsoft have recently released SQL Server 2019 CU16, and in this blog post I’m calling out a very specific bug that Microsoft have addressed, and the implications this has to business-as-usual operations. Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) & Compressed BackupsMicrosoft have been tracking a bug related to using TDE and compressing backups, impacting both database, and log backup types. Should you attempt to restore a compressed backup of a TDE database, you’ll likely receive a message similar to the below:Msg 3241, Level 16, State 18, LineThe media family on device 'BackupFileName' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.Oh dear. This isn’t good! Prior to CU16, Microsoft’s workaround was to simply not compress your backups. Virtual Hardware Version for CDP

Tried looking for this, but does a VM have to have a minimum version for CDP Replication?  Turning up CDP for the first time for two VM’s and getting the below error.  Or am I going about this wrong? 6/27/2022 4:58:31 PM :: VM configuration for the initial sync completed with errors Error: The virtual machine version is not compatible with the version of the host 'esxi02'. DAS/NAS Storage server for hardened Linux repository

I run Veeam B&R 11 on a Windows server but at the moment it is just making some physical backups of a number of critical Windows hosts and a few EXT4 volumes on Linux hosts.The majority of our data (give or take 125TB) is hosted on a SAN (mirrored) exposed as EXT4 volumes via iSCSI on a Linux server.As an extra level of backup, I want to start backing up this data on a regular basis with Veeam B&R 11 onto a new suitable storage server with sufficient Direct-Attached Storage or some kind of NAS unit, preferably with this storage configured as a hardened Linux repository in Veeam.This storage server would be in a different location to the SAN, but connected over a 10GBE link.Has anyone got some advice on what would be a good hardware solution for this Linux-based hardened repo?Should I be looking at one of the larger Synology NAS units with sufficient capacity (not sure if this can be used with Veeam as a Linux repo or would a dedicated server full of storage be a better option.

SSL certificate authentication error due to mismatch in Veeam client versions

Dear Community,I’m running Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition 9.5 and replicating offsite to a Cloud vendor. I upgraded it to Version 12 to get bug & security fixed. Upon reaching version 12 I came to know that the Cloud vendor does not support version 12, they only support 11a.Now the I have tried to downgrade it to 11a but the Database is locked to Version 12 and is not usable.I’m looking to rebuild on Version 11a and archiving backups. is this possible? According to this KB https://www.veeam.com/kb4264 I successfully configured restore to AWS EC2 via endpoints and VPN. So I can restore VM from vsphere to EC2 via VPN.And now I have question :)Is it possible to make restore from EC2 to on premise via VPN, not thounght Internet?

Running backup with very little space left render QNAP NAS unresponsive

Hi,Does anybody has encountered the following odd situation: Situation (a): QNAP NAS full/over quota. When running the Veeam backup, it fails as expected reporting that the target directory is full.Situation (b): QNAP NAS with very little space (32MB left of 2TB). When running the Veeam backup, it hoses the NAS ....Top  Where in the second situation the QNAP NAS can no longer be accessed.  Any already attached ssh session becomes ‘stuck’ as soon as it tries to access the disk.  Also the number of smb process on the QNAP NAS keeps increase over-time. I have a Windows 10 machine with Veeam 11.0.1.1261 running backups remotely to a SMB shared on a QNAP with QTS 5.0.1.2194. Is there anything that I can do to prevent this from happening (i.e. actually get an error from Veeam in the second situation rather than an unresponsive NAS)?Thanks.

Hi,I will change my vm’s hosting to use SCVMM.I don’t find page which explain the advantages to have SCVMM with veeam.I understand we have tags and, but I’m not sure, a live migration of a VM don’t affect backup chain.Is not it ?What is the bests practices to configure relationship between Veeam and SCVMM ? Sorry for my english.Have a good day !
