Hi Folks, After a hiatus of wild IT academia activity and other events I want to get back to doing some posts. I am thinking of setting up a separate blog and then linking on to here like I noticed some people do. Looking for any recommendations on where to host my blog from the experts here? Thanks Geoff

This Friday I’ll be delivering a talk alongside @Rick Vanover on a key data protection best practice that I don’t believe gets enough attention: Data Encryption.Join myself and Rick as we talk about the escalating stakes in the battle against malicious actors and some of their latest tactics to extort a ransom out of you, some of the steps you can take to better protect yourself, and some of the gotchas that you’ll be glad to know when you remediate this in your environments. You’ll be able to see this on LinkedIn here or if you prefer, on YouTube here.Hope to see you there!
I created a SOBR in order to tier off data to AWS. That process works perfectly. My capacity tier setting is setup to Copy and Move. The Move is setup for 14 days (operational restore window)My backup job has a retention of 30 days with the Backup Repo being the SOBRAnd I am doing Forward Incremental with weekly Active Full on Sunday My issue is that in the Performance Tier, I only have 1 backup chain (currently there are 3 restore points Sun-Tues), not 2 as I would have anticipated with my Move policy. My Object Storage is showing the correct number of restore points / backup chains based upon the 30 day Retention I have setup on my job. What do you think I am doing work with this configuration? I am looking to have 1 complete backup chain plus current week, so 7 + 7 in my performance tier. What am I doing wrong that I am not getting my 14 days on Performance tier? Thank you everyone for your support

Morning all, This slipped under my radar on Friday, VMware have fixed some huge bugs such as inability to enable HA on ESXi U3 hosts in this release. But they’ve also pulled the original U3 update due to issues with failing rollup upgrades! But you first need to patch vCenter before upgrading to ESXi U3b vCenter Patch Notes:https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/rn/vsphere-vcenter-server-70u3b-release-notes.htmlESXi Patch Notes:https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/rn/vsphere-esxi-70u3b-release-notes.html

Hi all!I’m engaged in a project where we have to backup several physical servers with agents via WAN with very small bandwidth.I prepared a portable server with local disks to collect the first full backups within the ROBO locations’ LAN.Back in the central datacenter I would like to use that as a seed for future incremental backups. I’m aware of the basic procedure for that (copy VBKs, rescan repo, map job). But in the end I would like to have only one agent backup job for all servers; though the mapping option lets me only choose one job to map to thus loosing the previous chains.Any options I am missing or not possible? Thanks for any input!Tim
For those that use Veeam Agent for IBM there is an issue with the LIBPATH variable when changed. See the KB from Veeam - KB4273: Unable to use Veeam Agent for IBM AIX after LIBPATH variable has been changed
Hey! Sorry it’s late in the day but happy Friday! Today’s Fun Friday question is. What year did you first use Veeam? Bonus points if you can remember what you were using it with! For me it was 2013, I’d just gone to another company that was using Veeam + VMware and I immediately felt like this was the first truly user friendly backup solution. It was really intuitive and actually saved me during my first ever ransomware battle later that year! (Thanks to rotated USB disks!)
Veeam has published a storage plugin for NEC Storage M Series.Find the release notes here:https://www.veeam.com/kb4274

Hi all, I am trying to create a Monthly Full Backup with Incremental Backups in between. In the ‘Advanced’ section, so far, I have created a Backup Job with ‘Incremental’ option selected. I have also enabled ‘Active full backup’ which will run on the last Friday on Monthly basis. In the ‘Schedule’ section, I have selected the ‘Run the job automatically’ with condition that it will run at 10 pm of the last Friday, every Month. So, the question is have a configured it correctly ? Thanks,Abhi
Has anyone had any success getting email notifications via Office 365 to work from their Veeam Azure backup appliance? I keep getting SMTP auth errors, even though I’ve confirmed the credentials are correct. I’m using SSL and authentication over port 587 and have tried various Office SMTP endpoints without success. I have added the appliance IP to our on-premise connector in Exchange Online.Weirdly, I am able to get it to send the test email if I relay via Gmail, but cannot for the life of me get it to work via Exchange Online. Hoping I’m just missing something obvious. For what it’s worth, the same account I’m using can send emails from our copier via Exchange Online without issue. Any suggestions appreciated!
I have several SQL jobs that currently perform nightly (or weekly) restores of a production database on other servers. Since we have now migrated to the Veeam Backup and Replication solution, I am trying to accomplish these same tasks within the Veeam environment. (BTW, we are on Veeam version 11.) I set up the Veeam PowerShell environment as described here https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/powershell/getting_started.html?ver=110#remote and wrote a script to perform a database restore (see attached).I ran the script interactively within a PowerShell session and it completed successfully. I ran it again as a Windows Scheduled Task and it worked. However, I can’t get it to run as a SQL Server Agent job. Here’s the error message that I’m receiving:The term 'Start-VESQLRestoreSession' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.Sinc
Hello,I tried to install a new VBR server with the iso of Version 11a P20211211 (VeeamBackup&Replication_11.0.1.1261_20211211.iso).This fails at once with a strange error…Tells you everything you have to know… After that I tried the install on the same machine with an iso Version 11a P20211005 (VeeamBackup&Replication_11.0.1.1261_20211005.iso) and the Patch to V11a (P20211211 VeeamBackup&Replication_11.0.1.1261_20211211.zip) and all is working fine. Did anyone get this error, too? I did not find anything in the forums to this behavior…Unfortunately I did not have much time and had to get this installed, so I did not get all logs for Veeam support. I will try to recreate this situation….
Happy Friday! Let’s kick off 2022 with something helpful for everyone! Have you got a tip/secret weapon that you live to use to better protect environments? Maybe it’s something to help the service desk keep tickets down, maybe it’s something that helps improve your accuracy when sizing a deployment, whatever it is share it below! Anyone that reads my blog posts will know I’m a strong believer that backup frequency shouldn’t equal your RPO, you should under promise and over deliver. You can see more on that here: I preach this to everyone. But my favourite trick to delivery an awesome recovery experience involves storage snapshots and file servers. Commonly I see organisations backing up their file server daily or twice daily. But we all have seen those pesky shared spreadsheets that are used by many people all day amongst other use cases. There’s a huge amount of data change per day on file servers and there’s always an accident or two. So my trick when the customer has a SAN that su
