Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions 2021

@wolff.mateus asked what Brazil community thinks about latest Gartner Report for Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions. I think this is interesting globally as well!According to Gartner, Veeam is about 1 cm (or inch, if you prefer) behind the leader in Vision  Honestly I have no deep knowledge about other competitors. So I looked at Veeam’s Strengths and Cautions. Strengths:Instant recovery True! More and more workloads are adding to this feature. Like Database and NAS in v11. Cloud cost transparency Yes, with Build-in cost estimation. Like for Veeam Backup for AWS 3.0 Technical support Customers are very satisfied with support. I personally too. What is not mentions is the satisfaction level of the software quality, which is also extremely high.Cautions:Deployment complexity In large-scale environments, this can happen. RPC function call failed with NTLM disabled

I wanted to share this just incase it helps someone else. I was getting the following errors in Veeam B&R Community Edition 12.0.0.1420 when trying to add/rescan one of my eight Hyper-V hosts. These started occuring when moving towards a full block on NTLM in our environment.Disks and volumes discovery failed Error: A security package specific error occurred. RPC function call failed. Function name: [GetSvcVersion]. Target machine: Network path not found or invalid credentials supplied.I verified DNS was good, disabled firewalls, enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP, among other things. None of these helped.What ended up fixing this, was enabling the “This account supports Kerberos 128/256 bit encryption” on our Active Directory user that services Veeam. I’m not sure why they other hosts were fine, but this fixed the final one and should have been done anyways.

Restore Issue -Agent failed to process method

Build: 12.0.0.1420 We are unable to run a restore from a backup due to this error message.  Restore type: Windows guest file restore.  VM size is about 5TB.

We need to take backup of Vmware VM to On-prem and Replicate to Azure. Also Need failover from on-prem to azure and then failback from azure to on-prem.How can we configure?

PostgreSQL credentials

Trying to upgrade Veeam from 12.0 to 12.1, and the original installer has left. How would we reset the credentials so we can perform the update? We thought our service account was used but apparently not. All attempts to update have failed so far. Part of the issue is most NASA accounts require PIV card authentication, and I don’t know if that plays well with a Veeam update. The service account is PIV exempt. The current version is pushing an old version of the kmod veeamsnap that won’t work with the current RH kernel. Why don’t we just rebuild the kmod in the fly every time a new kernel arrives like other kmods seem to work? Like CUDA for example.

Azure, Amazons and then Wasabi..?

We have been using Amazon S3 with immutability for years and its been working great at every restore, both in test and in production. But I must admit I have been waiting a long time for the Microsoft Azure Immutability to be in place and now with V12 it seems be at rest, at last! :) It will make it more streamlined since we can buy/subscribe the Azure Plan at our NCE/CSP-distributor at it will automatically fall under the customers name which then again will be in place on the monthylt bill. Great! But then I just started to read about Wasabi which really seems like an affordable solution, and even at much better pricing than Amazon/Azure.. How is that even possible..? With the V12 they have also appeared in the UI for the object storage and I guess they are know among the most interesting companies. I was wondering if anyone have any experience with Wasabi, and how you are comparing the offers/pricing from Azure, Amazon and Wasabi? As a Microsoft-shop we try to standardize as much we

Can't install VeeamOne Agent

Hello, Just getting into Veeam. Trying to install VeeamOne agent on my Veeam B&R box from my standalone VeeamOne server. However, it keeps failing out. I’ve tried unloading any anti-virus, disabling firewall. I’m running it using administrator credentials. It is not domain joined so it does not have any odd security policies. I’m using ComputerName\Administrator for the installation account. Using B&R 11 to backup Physical Workstations Windows 10 Pro is installed VEEAM shows Microsoft Windows 11 (Next, 64-bit, Technical Preview) and brings a warning.

The workstation is in a Protection Group and Agent Version 5.0.3.4708 is installed.The workstation was added over the Active Directory and the AD shows Windows 10 Professional is installed.  I also logged into the workstation and yes indeed Windows 10 Professional is installed.  Windows 11 is blocked from installing in our Network using a GPO and the Workstation was not upgraded to Windows 11 and then reset back to Windows 10.Its been showing the warning since Tuesday.  Removing it from the Protection Group and re-adding it does not help.

What scripting/programming language do you use for monitoring/reporting/automation?

I am curious what languages are used by the community for reporting, monitoring and/or automation. I personally do a lot of scripting with PowerShell. What language is worth learning it?I wish, Veeam will replace their PowerShell Plug-In by a PowerShell module in www.powershellgallery.com.@Kseniya Just a little thing: when embedding code here in the community, PowerShell is no language-option. Maybe this can be added in the future?

Calculating backup time

Hard disk 20 (3.5 TB) 1.9 TB read at 41 MB/s [CBT] - Can anyone tell me how long it should take this disk to complete backups? The backup ran for 13:21 hrs and failed to complete due to backup window setting. The backup window for the job is set for 15 hours 5pm - 8am. In addition how can i confirm if  a FULL or Incremental backup is running for a VM that failed backup.Backup type is VMware Image Backup.

How to migrate existing repositories (to XFS)?

I think a lot of customers will plan to migrate their existing repositories (NTFS, ReFS) to a new XFS repository with immutability in v11. I am curious about the options you see to migrate backup files to a new XFS repository. I have already said goodbye to the idea, block-linked (block clone (ReFS), reflink (XFS)) data can be copied without dehydration. A nice way is to put a new repository into place and let the old one(s) fade out. But how to move long-term backup? How do you migrate backup repositories?

Has anyone found a better way or backing up a Raspberry PI to a veeam repository other than using a script to dd the entire SDCard to a SMB/CIFS share and then backing that up?

Which Application Aware Backup method do you use?

@Gostev mentioned some data loss issues in conjunction with VMware Tools quiescence in his current “the word from Gostev”. This method is used, when Veeam application-aware processing is not enabled ...… but “VMware Tools quiescence” is.Also because of such issues, Veeam recommends using their application-aware backup.So I want to ask the community, which backup method for application awareness do you use for Windows vSphere-VMs:Veeam application-aware processing VMware Tools quiescence.I personally try to implement Veeam processing whenever possible (security, network,...). At least for AD, SQL-based applications, Exchange, ...

Azure Immutablity - possible to enable it on existing container?

One of the great features we’ve gotten with V12 is object-lock with Azure S3.@Rick Vanover did a great walkthrough for MS Ignite last year with a V12 beta already.With new storage accounts and containers it works as he explained, which I could prove in a few environments already. My (and some of my customer’s) question now is: can we enable it safely and supportedly on an existing blob bucket with let’s say hundreds of TB of data already inside? First, you would have to enable “version level immutabilty” within the container: Quite easy while creating a new container like Rick has shown, but if you would want to do this afterwards, you first had to enable a policy on the container: Having this policy also makes the container differ from a freshly set-up immutable container. The latter would not have this policy.To add this policy one would also have to enable versioning for the storage account beforehand: I tried that in a testing environment and ended up being able to activate immutab

Ransomware discovery time and retention times

 i had some discussion on the matter of retention times in context of protection against ransomware/insider attacks. Setting up a hardened repository and making data immutable for a certain amount of time is great stuff to implement. But how long is long enough?I can remember some research or reports stating there is an "average" discovery time of ransomware / encrypted data , but i cant seem to find the articles anymore.What would people here recommend for setting retention times for specifically protecting against these attacks?I'm thinking about something arround 14 - 31 days of immutable daily backups at minimum. Any shorter has higher chance of matching an attackers' maximum amount of patience for example, to just let data expire on the repo before taking action perhaps.Or are you seeing pretty short detection times in your experience and the most recent backup was used most of the time to recover? I'm crossposting from the R&D forum. Perhaps it is better to dicuss this here.

Trying to restore Windows backup on Openstack environment

Hi everyone,I have an issue with my Veeam Media Recovery iso for Windows. I would like to use it on an Openstack cloud platform, but this iso won't boot.I know that Veeam doesn't support officially this, but I'ld like to know if somebody here try this ?The iso was generated from my Veeam B&R 11.0.1.1261 on a Windows 2016 server backup.Here what I tried :  - testing the iso on VMware environment = work  - upload the iso on Openstack  - run the iso with a flavor which have  1 cpu, 2Gb RAM and 1Gb HDDresult = No bootable device was found  - create a volume from the iso  - make it bootable  - run the volume with a flavor which have  1 cpu, 2Gb RAM and 1Gb HDDresult = No bootable device was foundFor your information, the same step work very well with my VMR iso for Linux on my Openstack platform. I have this issue only with WindowsThanks for your help

If the source VMs have virus/infected, technically Veeam can backup that but can Veeam knows that the source is infected with virus/ransomware?

.NET 4.8 & Veeam B&R 11

Hi,Can anyone confirm if .NET 4.8 can safely be used with Veeam B&R 11?I need to install an agent on the host server and .NET 4.8 is a requirement. I cannot get a definitive answer from our 3rd party vendor who just refer me back to the System Requirements. Thank you
