VMware RDM Replication

Hi @Shaokat - No... Veeam can't replicate RDM. What you can do is install a Veeam Agent in the guest OS & back up the Volume that way.  Mmm...what about CDP replication?  RDM’s can be replicated using snapshot-based replication because you can’t snapshot a RDM.  But CDP is different because it using an IO filter to split the data between the production datastore and the replica target.  I haven’t read anything yet, but I’m going to go check...CDP might work…..

I think you’re looking at the Veeam agent, but that’s going to be for backups, not replication.  But you could at least backup the data and then use a copy job to copy it to your DR site.  The other thought is if SQL can replicate the data itself to the secondary location….log shipping or sorts as I recall, but it’s been a long time since I’ve done anything with that. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/system_requirements.html?ver=120#cdp_source_target

VMware RDM Replication

pRDMs are an older way of solving certain problems and have many limitations (such as replicating these with Veeam).   Have you looked into migrating those disks from a pRDM to a vRDM?https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2009226 Veeam can handle RDM in virtual mode (vRDM) rather than a RDM in physical mode (pRDM).   Good thought.  I forgot that there are physical and virtual RDM’s.  Personally, I’m not a huge fan of clustering, either physical or virtual servers.  Seems to add needless complexity in most cases.

Issues replying to topics in the Community Hub

I have had that too in some posts but not recently.  It is annoying but I always copy my text, refresh then paste again to post. 😁 I’ve had it happening reliably.  I’ve resorted to copying everything I type to the clipboard before I hit send so that I can paste it in if/when it fails.  And it’s been nearly every post as of late.  Strange issue for sure.

While I like money and banked time,  I also like relaxing and turning my brain off from time to time.  I This is probably the reason I didn’t sit for the exam the first time I went through the VMCE course.  I try to separate work from home-life as much as possible, but maybe a bit too much at times.

VMware RDM Replication

From what I’m reading, Clustered Virtual Disks require Fiber Channel and cannot be used with ISCSI….which may be fine for most folks that are trying to cluster disks, but for me, that won’t work because none of my clients are using Fiber Channel.  Another link indicating that FC is required is here:  https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/79616

From what I’m reading, Clustered Virtual Disks require Fiber Channel and cannot be used with ISCSI….which may be fine for most folks that are trying to cluster disks, but for me, that won’t work because none of my clients are using Fiber Channel.  Another link indicating that FC is required is here:  https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/79616   yes FC is one requirement if i remember correct or vsan will do the job. for me (as also the storage guy) FC is kind of a “nobrainer” sorry about that. not often worked with iscsi sans until now tbh. No worries.  At my old job, everything was FC, but now that I’m out of Enterprise and dealing exclusively with SMB clients, nobody here has FC.

Invalid mail credentials

Another installation, on another server, with the same accounts and credentials, works perfectly.    Was going to say, I’m surprised you can still use basic auth.  It’s going away...I’d recommend changing to Modern Auth.

State of the Homelab, 2024 Edition

I just received a seeded Synology DS723+ yesterday to test out (and blog on).  Currently has two 4TB Synology SATA drives, two 400GB M.2 drives and a 10GbE network card.  Going to play around with a few things including testing performance with 1GbE vs dual 1GbE vs 10GbE, test performance of SMB vs NFS vs ISCSI, using M.2 caching vs none, etc.  Basically, just use and abuse and see what happens.  I’ve always felt that using SSD’s was less beneficial to performance than 10GbE, but I want to test it out and see if that gut feeling is correct, and if so, by how much.  Probably the thing I look most forward to is running a LHR VM on the M.2 drives using the 4TB drives as the repository.  Not all Synology’s NAS’s are capable of setting up the M.2 drives as a separate volume and will only run them as a caching tier to the main disks, but there are a couple models, this being on of them, that can do so without some sort of hacky workaround.  I have eyed this sort of setup for a couple clients

Homelab Choice

- A Synology 923+ [I got this due to my Veeam Legend and vExpert status]. Here is a post on how to set up DS923+, and many more to come. The next would be on how to protect DS923+.  Hah...I wonder how many of us got these.  I just assembled mine today and am getting ready to set it up, but I have to balance it with the day-job and right now I’m about triple overbooked, so it may be a bit before I can find the time.

Failed to save Veeam CDP proxy: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it

Another thing you can try is...if you’ve just built this server up, and haven’t done so yet...you may simply need to perform a reboot. After installing the OS, did you run the upgrade/update cmd?  sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y No, but I’ll give this a try.  I looked up the firewall and assumed that if I hadn’t enabled it, it wouldn’t be running.  I didn’t see anything running on 6182.  I followed a guide I found online for deploying the proxy but it only addresses VMware proxy’s, and to that end, that worked perfectly.  But CDP is giving me an issue and I’m not sure why.  I do have a case open with support.

Will report that the update didn’t change anything.  Awaiting support….they did reply last night about seeing some credential issues in the logs, but that was earlier in the day when I fat-fingered a password, so nothing back since then.

What's your favorite VBR Trick?

Interesting use of SureBackup….I hadn’t considered that.  While while not really a hack, I’ve used QuickMigration more than once to move a VM from one host to another for hosts not joined to a vCenter at remote sites.  Seeing some of these answers, I need to get more creative….

Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: All backup proxies are offline or outdated

And if you’re like me, it may still not work well because I have a failing proxy server (or former proxy server) that was also a repo server.  And I can’t remove that repo just yet, so I ended up building a new proxy server (or servers) and removed the proxy role from that server for the time being.

Migration from Hyper-V to VMware

See below: https://rhyshammond.com/converting-hyper-v-vms-to-vmware-using-veeam/ Hope this helps!  Thanks for this.  I have a client I’m going to be migrating from Hyper-V to VMware shortly...as soon as I get their new hosts setup.  I haven’t yet had a chance to do my due diligence on the best method for this, but I had assumed it was either going to be Veeam or the VMware vCenter Standalone Converter, but Veeam will make this much easier and this looks like a great starting point for me as well.

Migration from Hyper-V to VMware

Next to installing the vmware-tools, don’t forget to uninstall the hyper-v integration tools.  This got me the other day.  The Hyper-V integration tools left behind a Hyper-V VSS writer causing Application-aware backups to fail because it wasn’t able to take proper VSS snapshots due to the writer being listed in the registry but missing.  Once I removed that registry entry and rebooted, all was well.  Seems like a lot of folks about the cleanup function after a P2V or V2V migration across platforms, but this is really quite critical.

Hi Shane, I was just thinking about this as well and had considered talking to the higher powers about some sort of VUG activities in the midwest, but I hadn’t had time to put much thought to it.  I think it’d be silly for me to consider any other region, so joining the KC region makes the most sense from Omaha.
