Experiences with orphaned backup files

This week I was investigating some imbalance in size on two (scale out) repositories. Every repository gets the backup of a subset of all VMs and copy these to the second repository. And vice versa. So in theory, both repositories should be very similarly utilized. But when you look at volume properties, this is not the case. We see quite a large difference. So I used PowerShell to query VBR and sum all data of each VM on both repositories (I will post some code snippets next week). And I found out, VBR does not know about a notable amount of data (VBR-query showed much less used data than volume properties did).So there seems to be backup data, VBR is not aware of. I call these files orphaned files. What are your experiences with orphaned files? Do your see them very often or not at all? Or are you not aware of their existence? Connection actively refused

I'm trying to recover files in my backup using console -> Restore guest files -> Microsoft Windows...and it is giving the following message:- Connection Problems: No connections can be made because the target machine has actively refused them.and then another window opens with the following error:- Mount wasn't foundUntil last month it was working normally. What can it be?

VMware Horizon VDI support

Hello, I have been asked by one of Veeam partners about my take if it comes to Veeam support for VMware Horizon VDI platform, despite the choice of taking the POC option I also chose to take your input on this. Considering that VMware Horizon VDI is based on ESXi, do we still consider the desktops(Instances) or sockets as unit of licensing? If so, is there any operational implication or/and limitation if it comes to operations and protection of the VMware Horizon components? How to exclude a SQL database from getting backed up so there won't be failed email messages

I am just starting out doing Veeam SQL backups and one thing I found is I need to be able to exclude certain dBs from getting backed up in Veeam. The dBs that I do not want backed up are for dev and the dB is restored to a different server nightly so when a Veeam SQL log backup happens I’m getting the error “Collected SQL Server transaction logs do not match any existing database backup: DatabaseName” which is 100% accurate.I do not take full backups every day so when the logs are getting backed up this particular dB does not have a full associated with the log backups.This dB would not need to get backed up at all.

Option to rescan repositories has disappeared

I have a server I am running VBR 11 on. The option to rescan repositories has just outright disappeared. I have tried closing and re-opening VBR, but this did not resolve the issue. A server reboot has also not resolved the issue.

Strange Warning "Failed to index guest file system. VSS Control: Index failed"

Hi there,Veeam B&R 12 is installed on a Windows 2022 Server, which is installed on VMWare ESXi 6.5 U3. From there I backup our produtvie Server, which is a VMWare ESXi 6.7 with a Windows Server 2016 and a Windows Server 2012 R2 (Exchange Server) installed on it. Everything works fine, exept the backup of the Windows 2012 R2 Server. It does backup, but I receive the Warning “Failed to index guest file system. VSS Control: Index failed". Is there any way to fix this, except disabling the file indexing?

Veeam V12 upgrade

Actually I have tried to install v12 RTM as a in-place upgrade on 4 customer servers now and all fail.Veeam support has been on remote session and we will continue the work tomorrow since it also failed at last attempt after hours of troubleshooting. Would be interesting to hear if there is anyone else who has been issues with the upgrade? The servers I have tested has the latest v11 build and server 2016. Very simple deployments with few config settings so no big issue. But so far I am a bit concerned to start upgrading larger deployments.

synology running linux vm as hardened repo

Can’t find an exact answer to this scenario. Is it possible to run a Linux vm (Ubuntu) on a synology (via VMM), and expose (or give access to) the underlying storage to the vm so that we can use the immutable feature?example:1: 40tb storage in one volume2: ubuntu vm having access to that storage somehow (I’m unfamiliar with vms aim synology)3: somehow configuring the veeam server to point to the Ubuntu vm storage so that it can use immutability

Backup stopped working

Hello, I have a Veeam server that backs up a Win server 2016 server located at another location. Veeam connects to this VM over a SDWAN connection (Zerotier) This has worked perfectly for years. All of a sudden, a few days ago, it started failing. I uninstalled all components (Veeam Agent) from the server, then redeployed the agent. I can ping the remote server, install the veeam agent, etc on it. But when I run the job, I get an error: “Error: Failed to connect to remote backup service.” Any ideas what could cause this?

Warning when running VM backup - SetVmCustomConfigOption failed

I am testing some VM backups in a customer environment. Experience with HPE Apollo or other High Density server as backup repository?

Hi,I’d be interested in getting feedback from people that are already using HPE Apollo’s or other high density servers with local storage as repository server. It seems that a lot of people are currently planning to use them.what is you setup? Number of servers? Number of disks? Which type and size of RAID? Number of VM’s / source data how is your performance? do you use them only as backup target or as copy source as well? which filesystem ReFS/XFS with blockcloning/reflink

HPE StoreOnce backup copy jobs fails with file session error

Hi, We have a lot of backup copy jobs (but far from all) that fails with the error “Failed to dispatch repository file session resource requst. Requested amount of file session (193) is greater than the maximum amount available (192).According to HPE Veeam should know that this StoreOnce has a internal limit of 192 datastreams and should not try to open number 193. Anyone with a idea of how to fix this?

Hello everyone, it’s correct that concurrent tasks limit on the following repositories depend on the hardware (CPU/RAM) of the gateway server (transport server):DataDomain connected in FC to gateway servers with 16 cores and 32GB RAM Immutable on Linux servers with 16 cores and 32GB RAMConcurrent tasks are 32 or 16VMs as reported in the following documentation:Limitation of Concurrent Tasks - User Guide for VMware vSphere (veeam.com) NOTE Task limits set for backup infrastructure components influence the job performance. For example, you add a VM with 4 disks to a job and assign a backup proxy that can process maximum 2 tasks concurrently for the job. In this case, Veeam Backup & Replication will create 4 tasks (1 task per each VM disk) and start processing 2 tasks in parallel. The other 2 tasks will be pending. ThanksFederico

Veeam Upgrade issue.

I recently updated a client from Veeam 11, I think .816 to the latest version available. Everything went as usual as I do these quite often but this one is throwing a pop up that states, "unable to upgrade plug-ins under the current user, please open the console under an account with administrative privilege's:" when I launch Veeam. I am logged in as a local administrator account and have updated this client in the past with no issues.I just click on okay and it opens up like normal. I also checked for any updates to the managed machine and there is upgrade option. This is a stand alone Veeam system with no remote components.I don't think it's going to impact the functionality but will know more after tonight's job run.Appreciate any feedback!Thanks,Poettone!
