Everyone that knows me a little, knows that I’m a big fan of the 3-2-1-1-0 golden backup rule just like @Rick Vanover is also a big fan of this rule.In every conversation with a customer I will discuss and clarify this topic. For those who don’t know what the golden backup rule 3-2-1-1-0 means 😁, I wrote years ago a post of this topic it with more explanation (it pas my first post that achieved the weekly recap 🤗). Since then more followed...More info : 3-2-1-1-0 Golden Backup Rule | Veeam Community Resource Hub Well, in my opinion this golden backup rule is from now on not sufficient anymore and should be improved to a new rule! Why?Well, in version 12.1 of VBR there will be a lot of new functionalities regarding to detect ransomware, malware and detect suspicious activity in different ways. Therefore the current 3-2-1-1-0 is not sufficient anymore and should be changed to the platinum backup rule 3-2-1-1-0-0 😁 !!!So, there is an extra 0 being added and should stand for :0 should be t
Hello,I want to share with you the last script I make to get hardening configuration of the VBR server and then remediate some of them. The script need to be executed on the VBR server itself. It's built with Veeam 12.1 beta. That means some checks can break on GA version.I seperate it into 4 choices when you execute it :choice 1 = Apply Level 1 security (security check done by veeam product itself when you execute security and compliance on the VBR console)choice 2 = Apply Level 2 security (best practice about hardening Veeam product)choice 3 = Remove VBR console (Carreful, you can't use anymore Veeam powershell after this action)choice 4 = Get HTML security report That means choice 1 or 2 or 3 will performs modifications on the system.Choice 4 will not do any modifications, it just make the HTML report. Some sample available on fresh installation, fresh installation + L1 applied, fresh installation + L1 + L2 appliedIf you want to see report on fresh installation + after doing choice 1 +
Hello,How would my Backup copy Job chain look?Backup Jobs are 7 restore points (Incrementals + Synthetic Fulls)Backup Copy Jobs will also have 7 Restore points. As I’m going trough some old discussions I can see that with Forward incrementals and first Full Backup with backup copy jobs everything has stay above 7 restore points. Also one more question, do I need to seed backup copy jobs if I’m going to use WAN Acceleration in High Bandwidth Mode
Hello everybody,I have the following question regarding Backup Copy Jobs:I will create Backup Copy Jobs with Immediate Copying Backup Jobs are configured with incremental + Synthetic Full Backups going to Windows Repo (ReFS 64KB) connected via iSCSI to our NAS storage, Utilizing FastClone option. Now I would like to know is this going to be the same for backup copy jobs?I have 2 Wan Accelerators (Source and Target), Windows Repo on Target Location also connected via iSCSI to NAS Storage that is formatted as ReFs.Are they going to do the same configuration as primary backup chain, incrementals + syntethical (Fast Clone)What are the general best practices for Backup Copy JobsI would like to have identical setup as Backup Jobs on Primary Site
I need to know how could enforce VBR to delete the old backup chain as mentioned in the retention policy, our scenario can be summarized as follows:we activate a full backup every Thursday and get incremental backup from Friday till Wednesday, we need to enforce Veeam once get a new version of full backup delete all old backup chains, and keep only the last full backup file. Any help on this!
Hello We used to use EMC Networker as a backup program, and I used to be able to run a command line script that would query for a list of tapes currently in the library, and report on any that were marked as “FULL”. I would send this an email to our tape operators, and they would eject any FULL tapes so they could be sent for offsite storage. Is there a way I could duplicate this functionality for Veeam? Perhaps run a Powershell script that queries the library and reports on the usage status of the tapes currently in the library? (and if so, has anyone got an example they could point me at? Or a different way of getting the same info for my tape operators?)Thanks
By default when you create an Azure Blob Storage repository inside of VEEAM you are only required to enter the Blob Storage account name and key.Somehow VEEAM knows how to connect to Azure Blob and I assume it then relates to the actual Blob Account’s URL eg. https://myblobaccount.blob.core.windows.net/We have multiple sites and have set up multiple Azure Blob accounts (1 for each site)We also have a distributed firewall system whereby each site has its own set of firewall rulesTo date we have been setting firewall allow rules to allow VEEAM to access AZURE Blob storage site-by-site meaning X sites == X firewall rulesWe are trying to move to a single wildcard-based rule which can be applied in a consistent manner to all edge firewalls however in our testing we were unable to get this to work.Using MS Azure Custom Domain for access blob data (see excerpt at bottom of this post) we created a cname like below:myblobaccount.myinternalstorage.mycompanydomain.com CNAME myblobaccount.blob.
Hi Everyone, There are times that I think that my head has been stuck in the sand when it comes to technology. Maybe I just don’t read enough 😅. While forcing myself to consider black Friday/cyber Monday upgrades for my beleaguered home lab I stumbled upon Proxmox. Debian based KVM level 1 Hypervisor. Since I may go the route of purchasing an old powerful desktop I need something (free) that can help be getting vms’ running. Esx free won’t let me use API’s for Veeam backups anyways and I don’t know of any ways of getting a full working license other than time trial or attempting to become a vexpert (please correct me if I am wrong) I wanted to go with something else. I could just build KVM on top of a linux distribution myself but it would be nice to have something ready to go that has a community forum available.Have any of you used Proxmox? and if so what are your thoughts about it?https://www.proxmox.com/en/cheers
HiI am configuring a backup copy to S3 (immutable) The type of copy is periodic so that it only stores a weekly backup in the cloud (one month retention) My questions are: how does the S3 backup chain work? Same as locally? First week will be a full, second backup copy will be incremental but... what happens when the first backup meets the retention? Veeam converts the oldest incremental to a full? I'm right? Thanks
Hi Team,I have a site that uses Wasabi object storage for both archiving and have “copy backups to object storage as soon as they are created” checked in the SOBR. This has been ticking away for some months now doing what I’d expect it to be doing. Now I need to test a full scale recovery from this environment, assuming we have a total loss of all on premises infrastructure, including the VBR server. I have spun up a new VM in our DR environment and installed VBR. My next step was to connect to the object storage bucket and attempt to recover VMs from this. But when I attempt to connect I get a warning “Selected object storage repository is already managed by another backup server. If you continue, all jobs currently using this repository will fail. Proceed?” I don't want the current jobs to fail, as this is only a test. Can I still connect to this repository and only read the objects without modifying it? Or can it be mounted in read only? Or is there another way I should be doing thi

Hi Folks,I was wondering if people would be interested in creating a VMCE study group. I will be honest this time around I am a bit terrified of this exam. For one thing the last number of years my study focus has been on something else (I wonder what that is), I am naturally not great at these things just work double in order to try and be included in with the real smart folks 😃, plus the amount of changes in V12 will prevent me from winging it on previously acquired knowledge in older VMCEs and work experience.Obviously this would not be a “dump” zone or “point you to the answer from the test” cheating location, but instead a group creating questions, helping to understand fuzzy issues and most importantly giving support to people like me who have been petrified of exams/tests ever since kindergarten🤣. I led a CKA group study over on Kodekloud for a few Months and it was a lot of fun. We had bi-weekly calls (could have been Monthly to be honest) and some of the study techniques I l
So had a situation that I needed to quiesce the entire RabbitMQ cluster (controlled by the Rabbitmq-Operator) before a namespace was to be backed up. So came up with this as a solution. Today, I tried to restore a file for the Linux server, it failed and the error message was “Unable to obtain IP address for host ‘ubuntu2310”I check the Log from Restore Session, it show “Failed to mount restore point. Unable to obtain IP addresses for host ubuntu2310”Check the DNS records and it looks good.Ping the host from the VBR Server and it looks good as well.Check the hostname from the Linux server to ensure the hostname. It has no issue. Why Unable to obtain the IP address for help host the ubuntu Linux server? I solved it and the steps are as follows.Run sudo apt update at the Linux Server.Run sudo apt-get install samba at the Linux server.Try to re-run restore steps from the VBR console and the error has gone.
Good Community Day to everyone -I am pleased to share with the Community I scheduled my VMCE 2023 on v12 exam for this morning and was able to pass; even scored a little higher than the goal I set for myself. I was able to get into the 800s, so was pleased with my result.@Michael Melter created a post just under 2 weeks ago, and shared some great information. For a review of his post, you can read it here:I won’t re-hash the same things, but will give a little bit different take from my perspective though. Like Michael shares in his post, follow through the VMCE v12 Study Guide, as well as Anton’s What’s New document to review all the new features Veeam introduced with v12. And, this may seem common sense, but some may not take this to heart, but I also spent less time reviewing things I felt confident in, and spent more time with things I didn’t. Then, I took notes on them in a note style I could remember the info better. I spent a LOT of time in the User Guides. As for the exam, I cho
I apologize if this is a silly question. Here’s what I want to do - schedule backup jobs of VMs to disk repository, and then “clone” those backups to tape. So I‘ve set up backup jobs to my disk repository, and specified an ACTIVE FULL backup on Friday and Incremental backups (which is what I want), and scheduled it for every night. Additionally, I have create a Tape job, pointing to this backup job, and scheduled it to start the next morning. My question - the backup option for “Secondary Target” .. what exactly does that do? :-) Does that mean that the backup will go to my disk repository AND my tape library, all as part of one execution (i.e., does the tape part start as soon as the backup to disk finishes)? I already have the tape part executing on it’s own schedule, does this mean that the data will be sent to the tape *twice*, once by the scheduled tape job, and once as part of the “secondary target” option of the backup job? (which I don’t want). The documentation states “Backup

In this KB https://www.veeam.com/kb4027 The Huawei Plug-In for Veeam Backup & Replication reached End-of-Life on 2022-04-22 and is no longer available. VBR cannot call Huawei storage with it’s API to complete the backup job with storage’s snapshots. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/system_requirements.html?ver=110In user guide of VBR v11, Veeam Backup & Replication does not offer integration with Huawei storage. According to the above, Veeam VBR cannot support any backup integration with Huawei storage. If the environment only includes VMware ESXi 7 and Huawei storage, what is recommended backup mode can be selected in VBR v11?
