We are a vmware shop, being priced out. Many factors pushing us toward Hyper-V.
I understand that in the early days ReFS was bug-ridden in multiple aspects.
Going forward with Windows 2025 CORE Hyper-V, with VM’s of Windows2022, RHEL 9, and a few linux-based OVA deployments, what is the community recommendation for the format of the iSCSI LUNs that the VM’s run from? there will be sizes from a couple hundred GB to all the way to 6TB, and in a special case 20TB.
Our Veeam Repos are XFS, so not a factor here.
Thank you kindly

Hyper-V iSCSI LUNs: modern ReFS vs NTFS?

Hi there, Just regarding that fact checking statement regarding Direct I/O for CSVs, I’ve since found that it’s only supported on storage spaces, and not with traditional 3 tier setup with a SAN. Running it in this scenario makes it default to redirect mode apparently (hence a performance impact).
- SAN Architecture Stance: Microsoft explicitly instructs administrators deploying traditional Fiber Channel or iSCSI SAN hardware to format volumes using NTFS if they require maximum throughput via Direct I/O. []
- Severe Non-Owner Penalties: Running an ReFS CSV on a traditional SAN locks all non-coordinating nodes into file system redirection. This architecture results in a measurable performance penalty (up to 90% higher latency) on non-owner nodes compared to an NTFS volume using Direct I/O. [1, 2, 3]
