Are there any plans to add Backup to tape option for backups created by Veeam Plugins?

365 Backup Proxy

Hey all,I’m just working with a 30-day trial and really focused on backing up my MS 365 environment. I set up a test using my on-prem backup server as the proxy and offloading the data to an Azure Blob (also a trial). And it worked! :DBut it’s slow. Like 1.2 MB/s processing rate.My question is, has anyone setup something similar with an Azure VM as the proxy? And if so, does it improve performance? Thank you very much for your time!

VMware vCenter Appliance: image backup is deprecated since 7.0

I had the discussion two times last week, so I think it is worth sharing here.You may have noticed, VMware deprecated image level backup of its vCenter Appliance (VCSA) with vSphere 7. What does this mean? Basically, it is still supported to do image level backup and restore with VCSA 7.0. But it will not be supported in future releases. Notice that U1 and U2 are still 7.0 versions. With 7.n, with n>0, VMware will not support image restore of VCSA any more. From my perspective, this step was taken because problems arise when restoring this Linux appliance. I have seen many appliances requiring a filesystem check after restore or crash. When you are lucky, everything works fine afterwards. If not, you have to file a support ticket.To avoid this, VMware offers a new way for VCSA backup. Since 6.5 it is possible to run file-based backups and restore of VCSA. Since 6.7 this can be scheduled. With this, new protocols are supported as well: FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, SFTP, NFS, or SMB. Linux Proxy not requiring full su/sudo permissions

Am I the only one who does not like the fact that the Linux Backup/Mount Proxy needs a user that can do a su or sudo on anything?I would love to see the list of commands the Linux Proxy service user is actually using and then I would configure the sudoers list to allow those commands and nothing else.If the service user has the permission to execute any command with sudo, it de facto becomes a second root user, which we would very much like to avoid on any of our Linux boxes!Let me know what you think!

Hardened (Immutable) extent in Scale Out Repository

If you do no know much about Hardened Repository in Veeam VBR v11, read here to learn more about:I was asked, if a hardened repository can be a extent of a Scale Out Repository (SOBR). Good news: yes it can! But you have to take some facts into account.Hardened repositories can be Performance Tiers of SOBR. A SOBR can contain a mix of repositories: ReFS, XFS, Immutable and mutable. Even in mixed SOBR, Performance Placement Policy can be set. That leads to, for example, immutable increments and mutable fulls. When you mix, for example, ReFS with immutable extents, you can use Evacuate backups to free an extent.   I would not recommend any points 1 - 3!In my opinion the point 4 is the most important. With evacuating an extent you can easily migrate from ReFS to XFS with immutability.Notice: If you evacuate an immutable repository, Veeam performs a copy, not a move operation! Which makes perfect sense! When backups are evacuated to a hardened repository, files will be immutable as long as

Backup Copy job Immediate vs Periodic

Hi Folks, Just wanted to share my opinion on this. I was around when Cloud Connect was introduced and remember the struggle with customers when explaining backup copy job copy intervals. Often I would hear.. “can we not just have our legacy, backup job done then offsite?”. Veeam brought in the immediate copy not to long ago and I have already noticed some issues. When you leveraged periodic BC jobs you could set the copy interval differently for tenants with different quality bandwidth. I could be wrong but with Immediate copy if it gets behind it will copy one day, then right away try the next in order to catch up. If you have many backup copy jobs and only so many concurrent connections available this then becomes an issue. I prefer periodic copy, I can say to the tenant, yes we will get your backup copy jobs over the wire but with your current bandwidth we need 3 days… then it is up to them to increase bandwidth.

Which Application Aware Backup method do you use?

@Gostev mentioned some data loss issues in conjunction with VMware Tools quiescence in his current “the word from Gostev”. This method is used, when Veeam application-aware processing is not enabled ...… but “VMware Tools quiescence” is.Also because of such issues, Veeam recommends using their application-aware backup.So I want to ask the community, which backup method for application awareness do you use for Windows vSphere-VMs:Veeam application-aware processing VMware Tools quiescence.I personally try to implement Veeam processing whenever possible (security, network,...). At least for AD, SQL-based applications, Exchange, ...

[Quick Tip] Nimble Storage Integration VM Recovery

Just wanted to share a VM recovery tip with you all I recently discovered when needing to recover a VM no longer being processed by a VBR Backup Job it was in due to Deleted VM Maintenance Schedule. To assist with my recovery, you have to be utilizing Storage Integration technology with Veeam. My specific environment uses Nimble Adaptive Flash Arrays, so be sure to understand how your Storage Vendor’s snapshot technology works before assuming my “tip” will apply to your environment. Let’s assume you’re backing up VMs with vSphere Tags and during tag maintenance you mis-apply a tag, or forget to (re) apply a tag to a VM needing to be backed up. Or maybe you use vSphere “containers” to back up your VMs (i.e. Datastores, VM Folders), and you mistakingly move a VM out of the Container and the VM is no longer getting backed up. As a good Backup Admin does, such that you are, you review your VBR jobs daily to verify they succeeded: BOOM! Well done, Backup Admin!   But, you weren’t being as t

Best Practices Backup VMs with Disks on different Storages

Hi,we are running VMs on vSAN (VxRail). Backup with hot add mode works fine. Anything is ok.We are planning now, to offload big disks (>3 TB) to an iSCSI Storage device. z.B. PowerStore. So the VMs are running a mixed disk placement. System Disk stays on vSAN. Data Disk will be on iSCSI Storage. iSCSI Storage is attached to the same TOR Switch as the Veeam Rep Server. VMs are not stretched in the vSAN Cluster. Whats the best way to backup? What is your recommandation?

No VM available when creating new backup job on hyper-v standalone

Hi, I have installed Veeam B&R v11 on a windows machine running a 5 Hyper-V vm. I have registered my Hyper-V using backup infrastructure > Add server. It now shows up in backup infrastructure > managed servers > microsoft Hyper-V > Standalone servers. I have created a backup repository on a NAS on the local network. But when I want to create a backup job (home > backup job > Virtual Machine), I have no VM listed. Any advices on what I’m missing to be able to backup my VM?

Office 365 backup Teams vs. backup mailboxes

Hi, I have configured a backup job on all Teams and on first run, i am alerted the mailbox is already being protected by another job. 11-12-2020 11:04:59 :: Processing mailbox XXX completed with warning: Mailbox is already processed by another job This is correct, as i have a backup job doing backup of all mailboxes every 4 hours. What is best pracgtice? To do complete Teams backup including the mailbox in one job, and on another job do all my mailboxes and exclude the Teams mailboxes? As of now where i have the Teams mailbox backup done by another job, how would a Team site restore be done?  RegardsRobert

Windows scheduled tasks get problematic slower over time

The following post is not directly related to backup. I hope it is helpful anyway.At a customers backup server a very strange behavior was observed. After a few days without problems, scheduled tasks never seem to get finished. So a current running – never ending – task prevents the next run from starting. A reboot of the server resolved the problem – for a few days.SolutionAfter a research I found out, scheduled tasks get started with a lower priority than interactively started tasks. See my scheduled PowerShell script in screenshot here.Normally this is not a big deal. It does not matter when tasks like reports last longer than manually started. Nevertheless they should at least finish.The solution is to rise the priority of scheduled tasks. Unfortunately this cannot simply be set in the GUI. It can be done in a few steps, I list here.Start Windows Task Scheduler, right-click your task and select Export… and save XML file to a temporary location. Edit XML file with an editor of your
