Hi all,

We have 4 physical servers debian 13 that we did backup via the veeam linux agent 6.32...before  before.
We didn't upgrade our VBR to v13 we are still on version V12.3.2.4165.
Is there a way we install manual on the debian server the linux agent v13 and get this servers covered without upgrading to VBR v13
any ideas?
Thanks,
Benny

Even though Debian 13 is supported by Veeam Agent v13, the limitation here is not the operating system, but the management layer.

When agents are managed, VBR is responsible for job orchestration, policies, certificates and communication APIs.

VBR 12.3 was designed to work only with agent 6.x and does not have compatibility with the v13 agent architecture.

Because of that, a v13 agent cannot be registered or managed by a VBR 12.3 server, regardless of OS support.

Hi @De Cock as a technical rule of Veeam, the central console (VBR) must always be of the same version or higher than the Agents installed on the servers. It is not possible to centrally manage a new generation Agent (v13/v7) with a VBR console stuck at version v12.

As Matheus mentioned this is a compatibility limitation between the Agent and the VBR version.

The only way you could solve this (besides upgrade your VBR to v13) - you spin up a dedicated management instance based on VBR v13 only for those agents. This could avoid upgrading your main infrastructure to v13.

Okay maybe another option is to backup this servers with the agent in offline mode and not managed by the VBR?

You can use the free agent in standalone mode. https://www.veeam.com/products/free/linux.html?ad=downloads

Check capabilities and limitations for your situation

Hi @De Cock - yep...you can use VAL. As Antonio shared, make sure you verify your systems meet the requirements:

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agentforlinux/userguide/system_requirements.html?ver=13

...and pay special attention to the “software” section in the table. Most of those pkgs are generally already installed with various Linux OSes, but some pkgs are not...so make sure they’re on there or you’ll run into issues.

Though it’s a couple yrs old...I did a post on here to help implement standalone VAL. Hopefully it helps:

Best.
