Hi Everyone, Vulnerabilities wait for no-one, so whilst some are enjoying a weekend off, others are patching to protect against the latest risk. Log4j. This post has two objectives. Firstly I’m sharing my write up regarding the issues I’m aware DO have an impact to VMware, secondly what does this mean to the Veeam products… First up: VMwareI don’t often dedicate a blog post to a particular security vulnerability, but since it has scored a perfect 10 CVE rating, it’s important to be aware ASAP.VMware have identified multiple products that utilise the Apache technology that are vulnerable to the Log4j vulnerability. What is this “Log4j” vulnerability?A Remote Code Execution (RCE) has been discovered in Apache’s Log4j Java Library. It is possible to insert maliciously crafted strings into fields that will be logged, which then leverages the “message lookup substitution” function of Log4j to execute code. This can be used to deploy and execute payloads, or execute commands at a heightened
Hi, I don’t know if anyone else was aware but @haslund highlighted to me today that the new VMCE 2021 exam is now available for everyone looking to take/upgrade! Information on the training course is available hereInformation on the certification is available here FAQs:Do I need to attend the training course before taking the exam?If you don’t hold a valid VMCE 2020 certification, it is mandatory. If you do have a VMCE 2020 certification, it is recommended but not required. The one exception is if you took the VMCE 2020 class within the last year but have not passed the exam, you can take the VMCE 2021 exam until your class was sat one year ago. Can I still take the VMCE 2020 exam?Whilst Veeam continue to offer it, but it will be discontinued. Do I need to take the VMCE to do the VMCA?No, but it is recommended!Full FAQs from Veeam available here Planning on doing your VMCE/VMCA, or already taken it? Let me know your thoughts!
Hi guys, I’ve been busy on a rainy cold evening: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6877314027693969408/ cost: some green balls and 2 led light-strips on 3v and then plenty of Veeam-goodies that were somewhat everywhere in the house and at our office :-)… and most important: a set of steel nerves to temper the kids while lighting up all those pens in a tree full of very breakable balls...result: priceless Feel free to use, re-use, ab-use the below pics in your own message on social media.
I had to do a quick backup of a VM today.OK, no problem I thought and hit the Quick backup menue topic for this VM in the inventory tabThe job started and I saw some disk exclusion in the job log.Mhh… I wanted a quick backup of the whole machine. Then I saw that another job than I had expected was started for the quick backup.OK, this job backups indeed on disk of the VM only….Then I recognized that this VM is associated to several backup jobs. One which backups the whole VM, one to backup one VMDK with DB Backups and on job to backup one VMDK with log backups. It’s an older setup with a database without application aware backup. So, it seems that the quick backup executes the backup job which was executed last for the VM before the quick backup is started….And you have no choice to tell the quick backup which job you want to use… Am I missing something here? Is it a bug or a feature???? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to select the job which is used for that?Or am I the only one finding
Happy Friday! Decided to post this early in the day this time. As per the subject, what is your favourite feature Veeam have ever introduced? This can be across any Veeam product and from any version! For me, it has to be SureBackup. The ability to automate backup validation takes you from “it should work” to “it WILL work”. And you can’t put a price on the amount of sleep I never lost from worrying about the backups 😉
How are you naming your backup repositories (or extents in SOBR) today?
Hi all, I have a followup question to As I described before I’m “forced” (at least for the moment) to put the storage also on the Veeam server itself. Overall there might be the possibibility that there will by ~20-30TB on vib/vkb files. Can this still be realized within the Veeam VM?What are the alternatives if all data have to be on one physical server? BRFrank
Veeam just released a KB about Windows 11 and the Agent not starting after you upgrade to Win11. Check this out if you are having problems.KB4259: Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows can't be started or installed after upgrade to Windows 11
As we celebrate the completion of another rotation around the sun, it’s often a time of reflection. So I ask you, you wonderful bunch, in amongst all of your achievements this year, what are you most proud of? This could be an achievement, certification, personal life goal, bucket list item completed etc. It hasn’t got to be one single thing, in amongst so much negativity in the world, it’s great to share something positive, so ramble on as long as you need to! For me I achieved something from my bucket list this year, I flew a plane And professionally, I got to speak alongside Rick Vanover at VeeamON this year, which still blows my mind! And I got some of my blog posts published on Veeam’s official blog! All made possible by my acceptance into the #Veeamazing Veeam Legend program. I had a particularly tough year in some elements, but I also got to accomplish so much. And to whoever reads this, I wish you all a fantastic end of year and 2022
Just a quick info:It looks like there’s currently an issue with the mailbox backup in Veeam Backup for Office 365, which could randomly happen for a small amount of mailboxes.Processing mailbox XYZ failed with error: Failed to synchronize item changes in folder: TeamsMessagesData.. An internal server error occurred. The operation failed., ICS synchronization failed. The backup for most of the mailboxes is successful, but some can fail with the error message above.Veeam is aware of this problem; they’re already working on it and are also in contact with Microsoft. For further information you can also monitor this R&D forums post: https://forums.veeam.com/veeam-backup-for-office-365-f47/failed-to-synchronize-item-changes-in-folder-teamsmessagesdata-t77925.htmlI will update this post as soon as there’s something new.Update:Veeam has implemented a workaround for this issue with the following patch: https://www.veeam.com/kb4235
New job and one of my tasks is to cleanup VEEAM. Trying to make sure the backup settings are correct and consistent. I’m also renaming the jobs in a logical and consistent manner. First couple of renamed jobs ran last night. I was surprised that a) they did not take a new full and b) they did not create a new folder. I’m using Reverse Incremental. Can I safely rename the folders to reflect the name of the jobs? Will the vbk and vbm ever rename to the name of the job? I assume I can’t rename those manually.

You may have seen some corporate news today, Veeam has announced that Anand Eswaran will become CEO. Bill Largent who has been CEO at Veeam and with us for nearly all of our history will remain on the Veeam Board of Directors as the Chair of the Board. Here is the press release: https://www.veeam.com/news/veeam-appoints-anand-eswaran-as-chief-executive-officer.htmlHere’s also Rickatron’s short take and point of View:Veeam is a stable company and this move will help us grow to the next level Anand’s experience in the industry as CEO for Veeam will be very valuable I do not expect our missions and product strategy to change – meaning its reasonable to still expect NFR programs, Vanguard and Legend programs and rocking backup products. Stay tuned for more but wanted to let this group know as soon as I can.
Not sure if anyone is using CDP yet but you can run in to an issue with Veeam stating that the storage providers are offline. You can see how to obtain the fix from VMware in the following KB.KB4242: CDP filters installation fails with "Storage providers offline" (veeam.com)This all relates to the SPS certificate in VMware.
I get the difference between RI and FI. The question is, if I’m using RI, can I do a full restore at a point in time in the past? As in, I walk in this morning and all my servers have been crypto. Obviously, the last backup (full) is useless. Can I ask for a full restore or instant recovery as of 2 days ago?
I ask this question which I think is very important starting from the thread in the forum veeam .There is a best practices in a small environment (<4TB) about using only synthetic full backup, active full backup or both togheter alternating? What do Veeam recommend, since synthetic is selected by default?Use only Synthetic full lead to risks in terms of reliability and consistency of backups? On the other hand, using active full requires a lot of space in repository.I ask you Veeam gurus.
Hello everybody! I’d like to know if is possible to translate my reports of Veeam One.Anyone knows something about that?
Hi Community!Does anybody know, if is possible to query current Vulnerabilities in Veeam software? It should be possible to query the data automatically with APIs like Rest, XML, ... What I mean is something like VMware offers here: (RSS Feed)https://www.vmware.com/security/advisories.htmlI found already this:https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-15994/Veeam.htmlBut this seems not to be that current.Maybe @Rick Vanover or @Kseniya, do you have this information?
I work for an MSP and we rent Veeam licenses to our clients. We can monitor backups through the Veeam Service Provider Console but their are some features that are lacking using this. We are looking for a more robust monitoring to make certain that our clients backups are functioning. One specific thing that the VSPC lacks is reporting on issues with offloading to a capacity tier. Tech support verified this and put in a suggestion for this feature. We want something that has consolidated reporting. We look at the VSCP alerts twice per day currently.Does anyone know of any product that we can use to get better reporting on errors / alerts?
It looks like you need to be careful when using the Log On as for the Veeam services if the account being used is not in the Veeam Backup Administrator group within Veeam. The answer is to add the account to that group to fix the issue. See the KB.KB4252: Features of Veeam Backup & Replication may not function when the Veeam Backup Service is run as a user that is not assigned the "Veeam Backup Administrator" role
Yesterday I found a strange behavior in the Veeam PowerShell cmdlet Remove-VBRSureBackupJob. What happens: when you use this cmdlet to remove a certain SureBackup-Job using the parameter -Job, ALL SureBackup-Jobs will be deleted!. In my environment version 11.0.0.837 P20210525 was used. It seems the be a bug. [update] In the meantime Veeam confirmed that it is a bug. Also in v11a!https://forums.veeam.com/powershell-f26/remove-vbrsurebackupjob-deletes-all-surebackup-jobs-t78189.htmlSo when you test or plan to using scripted SureBackups, do not use Remove-VBRSureBackupJob currently!
Today’s Fun Friday question comes from @Kseniya (Thank you!):What’s the craziest/weirdest “Secret Santa” gift you’ve ever received? If you don’t celebrate Christmas or just don’t have any good stories, feel free to share any other noteworthy gifts! My weirdest one, I was once given a mini cactus, and a toilet roll!
Why this error when i try to copy from SMB to SMB with a File Backup job:
