Frequently we need troubleshoot Veeam Backup Server through the network.However, if Windows Firewall is enabled on SO it doesn’t reply ping and echo requests. At this moment so many people act disabling Windows Firewall and mostly times don’t remember to enable it again.So, if you want to allow ping without disabling Windows Firewall you can just run this simple command on cmd:netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="ICMP Allow incoming V4 echo request" protocol=icmpv4:8,any dir=in action=allow 

I’ve just been informed by support that Veeam does not allow restoring more than one file per restore job from a NAS archive repository. They suggested I create a feature request, so here goes.  Can I suggest adding a “feature” that allows for multiple files and whole folders to be restored from archives? Restoring one file at a time is a ludicrous proposition if you need to restore 1000’s or even 10 files.  We’ll need to find an alternative solution as we are already concerned about user requests for future data restoration from our already archived repos.

What was your most disappointing piece of tech?We all know tech is supposed to improve our lives, jobs, etc, but what about when it’s over promised, and under delivered? For me, two things stick in my mind. From a gaming angle, the most disappointing tech I ever witnessed was the Steam controller, the prototype looked amazing and revolutionary, a controller with a built in, full colour screen that could be controlled by the games. Then they scaled back their vision the closer it got to release, ending up a generic controller mainly, with a couple of Haptic Touch circles that were supposed to allow for more adaptive control, but then nothing supported it, now it gathers dust on my shelf! From a more high-tech angle, it’s got to be 3D X-Point, but you probably know it as Intel Optane, even though it was a joint venture between Intel & Micron.Again, a vision was sold that this was it, we’d be swiftly bridging the gap between storage and volatile RA

Running Veeam free version for Linux on Dell Optiplex 5060, OS is Linux Mint Mate 20.3.  Just setting up this machine and moving from an older Dell pc.  In old pc, ran Veeam free version for years of weekly b/u’s, no issues.  Veeam downloaded and installed via Synaptic and set for full system image, target is ext. HDD, USB connection to computer.In new machine, 5 b/u’s have failed, see s/shot.  Targets were 2 different 1tb ext. disks,  each formatted to FAT32, exFAT, and then EXT4.  One of the disks is the same one used for the backup chain in the old pc, no problems..  All failed attempts show the same bottleneck, “source” after running for 2 to 8 minutes.  Not clear what to do here since no previous snags w/ Veeam.   Any suggestions appreciated!

During troubleshooting a backup environment, it’s common the necessity of test ports responsivity of our backup servers, like Veeam backup server, mount server, proxy or repositories.We normally do that with telnet. However, by default telnet client is not installed during Windows Server and the Veeam Backup Server often is our principal component our backup infrastructure.So, if you want to test some communication port without install telnet client, you can use PowerShell for it.Use the sintax below:Test-NetConnection -ComputerName <IP> -Port <port>Here is an example for the command:An interesting point is that if the communication port is not well succeeded, the utility make an aditional ping test: 

The sequel of part 3 and last part 😄  How it works with Linux or shared folder repositoriesAs example : we connect a USB disk to a USB3-port at a NAS-device that is shared as a SMB-shareIn that scenario it’s behaving differently (it uses a limited version) than when using a Windows Server repository.Why limited?VBR keeps only information about the latest backup chain.So how is this performed :VBR creates the first time of course a full backup file on the currently attached disk, afterwards it creates incrementals until you swap or the number of configured restore points! It checks if the current chain is consistent, if so it will create a new incremental restore pointIf you swapped the disk, the chain is not consistent and will create a new full. Even when there is already a previous backup chain present. If forgets all information about former backup chain. So as before, I configure the job again with 7 to 10 restore points.So what will happen in the scenario of 7 restore points and

I hope, this post safes you the time I spent to figure this out.Normally I do not install Veeam Enterprise Manager (EM) unless there is a use case - like indexed file search. With it, EM can search a index - created at backup time. So no mount of restore-points is necessary to find files in backups. For this you have to filter your search:ProblemIn multiple VBR v11 + EM environments I had the situation that index search results shows just latest file version in result. I spent some time to troubleshoot, ask colleagues, recherche. This feature is broken in v11 and will be fixed. 

If we migrate the insider protection folder to another storage location, does Veeam still track that data, for the insider protection retention (7days)?

Hello, Customer have an existing veeam on prem setup plus tape, they do manually  tape vaulting - they manually transfer the tape from HO to dr site (vaulting site).What is the best and seamless approach so that customer no need to go to Dr site to do vaulting.Can we relocate the Tape from HO to Dr, setup veeam resources (server and storage) and have copy/move from HO to Dr then do the tape backup jobs?  Thanks

Hi everybody!Im writing this question more like as curiosity and to re-think in my home lab, I've been using a HP 360 Gen8 with 128GB Ram and 2TB SSD with vsphere 7 to host my full home lab: 3 hosts Vsphere cluster, TrueNas for NAS & NFS storage, and pfsense for routing and firewalling, and a Windows Server 2016 with Veeam B&R.Now Im thinking in something more “electricity friendly” , but I would love to read some setups and ideas from all of you, and maybe mixing them up a bit we can get with the SUPER HOME LAB!thnx!read you in the comments!

I tried to update veeam 5.0... but it didn't work. I tried to install the patch and it didn't work. I uninstalled version 5 to install version 6 and it didn't work. I tried to install version 6 on two other stations and it still does not work. I get a windows installer popup when I try to install VEEAM and then it crashes. can you help me please.

Good afternoon Group.It is the first time that I am going to install veeam with a client, I have been reading a lot of the documentation and watching the how to videos, but I can't find anywhere that recommends me how to partition all the installation paths and on which disks to put the installation paths for 100 VMs. From what I've read, it would be something like this: 1.-Installation folder at least 40 GB in path A, in this path the database is installed, wouldn't it be better to install the database in another path? 2.-Write cache folder of at least 10 Gb in SSD in path B:? 3.-Guest Catalog Folder, on SSD in path D:, how much space? Hopefully someone can give me their recommendation.Thanks in advance.

Hi, can you help me figure out this scenario.Customer have a license for VBR version 11 with few instances.They want to backup their Azure VM’s and store the backups on their Azure blob or Azure Smb file share. So the plan is  to spin a vm instance on their azure,  install VBR on that new VM instance, add the license, add their VMs as managed server on the VBR, configure target backup repository as Network attached storage (SMB) or configure target backup repository as (Object Storage - Azure Blob).Note: License is for VBR version 11 and not for Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure.Now the question is, what is the proper approach for this scenario?Can we add each vm instance from their azure as managed servers to be able to backup it up or do we have to connect through Veeam backup Microsoft azure appliance? (Note: Customer does not want to deploy Azure Appliance)Is adding Azure SMB share as backup repository supported? Can I directly point my backup to my target Azure Blob repository? 

Dear concern, I’m looking for a way (if even possible) to migrate a Windows Server 2012 Foundation(!) to an upgradable Windows Server 2012 Essentials or higher. Final goal is to get this system on a 2022 Essentials including all installed applications. The Server 2012 Foundation is not a DC !A direct upgrade of a Windows 2012 R2 Foundation to any other Windows Server version is imho not possible.Previous steps so far:New machine running main lates ESXi7.02 Migrate physical Server 2012 to VMware host. All test have been successful executed. Install Veeam Community main lates to the VM  Backup VMNow my question concerning the restore.
