I came across a SAP DB2 installation during one of my last projects and wanted to share with you how to backup these databases. VB365: Changes necessary for Teams backup in version 6a (New API)

For me this has been quite surprising news. With beginning of version 6a of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, a different API will be used for backup of public Teams channel messages. The current way with EWS is getting deprecated by Microsoft and in the future “Microsoft Graph Export API for Teams” has to be used.What does this mean for VB365 users?With version 6a VB365 will no longer by default protect Teams data. In order to still being able to backup public Teams channel messages, you will have register for the “Graph Export API”. This process can take up to two weeks and in addition the usage of the Graph Export API can cause additional costs (by Microsoft).How do you register for the Graph Export API?The registration process is described in detail in the following KB article: https://www.veeam.com/kb4322What costs will be expected?Unfortunately I can’t really say what costs will be generated by Teams backup. Here I want to show how to query space in VBR Repositories with a few PowerShell snippets. These can be taken to check used space and compare this with restore points in VBR database. It can be used for larger environments to analyze repository space. [Heads up] Backup function within vCenter Appliance (VCSA) stops working in U3

Another bug in vSphere 7 U3, I just read about. The backup function in the VCSA does not work in U3 any more when DB health check is enabled. Then each backup fails! Veeam Certified Architect 2022 - Course Review

This week I was able to sit the VMCA2022 course on Thursday and Friday. The course was taken through HPE Learning and is a two day course. A Short and Simple Description of Container Network Interface (CNI) in Kubernetes

Understanding Kubernetes Networking can be a challenge. A couple of years ago I was tasked to setup a distributed Minio instance running in containers for use with a Veeam SOBR S3 compatible capacity tier. At first, I thought about doing it on Kubernetes but very quickly realized that I was in over my head. I had no previous experience with Kubernetes and I could not just “wing it”. Among other things the networking piece I found especially hard to understand.In the end I created a Docker Swarm cluster which had a much easier almost “plug and play” overlay network and while that did the trick, I understood that simplicity also meant rigidity.Kubernetes follows the age old *nix (Unix, Linux BSDs and so on) philosophy of creating small separate entities that when brought together can scale into something very complex. Change Expiration date of immutable restore points (in v11 and v11a)

Another post about my favorite feature in v11: Hardened Repository. This time it is about the ability to change the expiration date of already immutable restore points. Veeam made this possible by using PowerShell. The corresponding command is: Set-VBRImmutabilityLockExpirationDate. This post is about how to use it.Select the restore point you want to change immutability expiration date. To show all restore points of a specific VM in a job you can run for example:Get-VBRRestorePoint -Backup immu_job_01 -Name VM02Here backup job name is Immu_Job_01 and VM is called VM02. I will change the date for the first - the oldest - restore point in the list. Demystifying Veeam’s Backup Copy Feature – Part II, Short-Term Retention

If you missed the first part of this 3-part series, you can read it here. In this post, I’ll be discussing the Backup Copy Job Short-Term Retention Policy. The main purpose of Short-Term Retention is to create additional copies of your Backups, whether on- or off-site, meeting at least the “3” part of the “3-2-1 Rule”.In previous Veeam versions, the Short-Term Retention Policy was referred to as the Simple Retention Policy. As with previous Veeam versions, the Short-Term Policy will retain using the Forever Forward Incremental method to copy the data to target, as long as Long-Term Retention (GFS) Policy is not enabled. What this means is this: during the initial run of the Copy job, a Full backup restore point (.vbk ) will be created, either 1 file or multiple files. For per-VM, a Full file will be created of every VM copied. If not enabled, one Full is created containing all VM data in a single file. Veeam Backup & Replication Monitoring Feature: Tape Drive Alerts

Everyday is a school day, and today I found out something really cool that Veeam was doing, that I never knew about because “It Just Works”.I had an alert generated from a customer system today that I had never seen before. Now I’ve seen plenty of alerts for different backup issues, whether they’re caused by networks, BSODs, disk space constraints etc, but I got surprised by this completely new one. A Tape Drive Alert, but of an unexpected variety Warning: “TapeDrive alert: The voltage supply to the tape drive is outside the specified range.”As I said above, I’d never seen this warning before! I didn’t know that Veeam was tracking such attributes of the tape drives it uses. Because backup of a vSphere VM almost always involves taking a vSphere snapshot, this VMware blog post will be interesting for every backup administrator. https://blogs.vmware.com/performance/2021/06/performance-best-practices-for-vmware-snapshots.htmlVMware has tested the performance impact of snapshots. Baseline performance is a VM without a snapshot. After that, performance testing is done with 1, 2 and more snapshots. Tested was default IO-tests and java application performance (SPECjbb). Tests included: vVOL, VMFS and vSAN.Test Results:Impact on vVOL depends on the storage system, because snapshots are taken there. VMs on VMFS have a huge performance penalty even with one snapshot. To be more exact: the first snapshot has the greatest impact! vSAN does not suffer much from snapshot with sequential workload. Veeam ONE Installation Error: Failed to Create Website

Hey everyone,Just a quick one from me here, I was playing about in my lab installing Veeam B&R and Veeam ONE v11a (because, why not?!), when I hit a strange issue. I’d snapshotted my VM prior to installing Veeam ONE so that I could revert back and try different methods (and play with automation). The first time I installed Veeam ONE, it worked PERFECTLY. Next day I revert the VM and tried to install it again, and I got an error that it failed to create the website and wouldn’t install!It seemed strange that a virtual machine I’d powered off before snapshotting would have two different outcomes when in both scenarios I booted the VM up and installed Veeam ONE in an identical way.So I started to dig into this and found the problem was caused by a dependency.
