Veeam Certified Architect 2022 - Course Review

Troubleshooting Tip: Recovering Access to a MSSQL Database

Hey everyone,I wanted to share this recent blog post I made with yourselves as whilst it’s not directly related to Veeam, I was helping someone that had locked themselves out of a Veeam database and needed to take a native backup for a support case with Veeam.  I was recently helping a customer create a SQL database backup for a support ticket and noticed that they had an interesting SQL Server configuration. There was only a single account with sysadmin rights, the sa account, but this account wasn’t allowed to sign in. The SQL Server was domain joined but there was just a single group allowed with Windows Authentication and that had the “public” server role only.There are a few reasons this could happen, accidental permission changes, or groups and/or user accounts being deleted from the domain that had been assigned the sysadmin role as examples. Update: Patch 20210525 brings CDP support for 7.0 U2The long-awaited patch for Veeam Backup&Replication v11, which brings support for vSphere 7.0 U2, has been released.https://www.veeam.com/kb4126It's important to note that CDP won't work with 7.0 U2 as there's a driver signing issue. ⚠️ Fixed Veeam CVE-2022-26500 & CVE-2022-26501 are being exploited (CISA)

It shouldn’t be news to you that Veeam B&R had 2 critical vulnerabilities (CVSS 9.8/8.8) in March 2022. Patches were released for v10a and v11a at that time.Here’s the corresponding KB article and a post from @Iams3le:Veeam KB4288If you haven’t updated yet, then here’s another good reason.Last week the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added both vulnerabilites to their known exploit catalog. This means that attackes are now actively exploiting the vulnerabilities and targeting environments which use Veeam B&R.CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilites Catalog I hope you don’t need more reasons to keep your Veeam installation up-to-date? Please also keep in mind that any other Veeam build below v10 is also affected. But as those are already End of Fix/Support, they didn’t receive any patches.

[Post digest] Performance Best Practices for VMware Snapshots

Because backup of a vSphere VM almost always involves taking a vSphere snapshot, this VMware blog post will be interesting for every backup administrator. https://blogs.vmware.com/performance/2021/06/performance-best-practices-for-vmware-snapshots.htmlVMware has tested the performance impact of snapshots. Baseline performance is a VM without a snapshot. After that, performance testing is done with 1, 2 and more snapshots. Tested was default IO-tests and java application performance (SPECjbb). Tests included: vVOL, VMFS and vSAN.Test Results:Impact on vVOL depends on the storage system, because snapshots are taken there. VMs on VMFS have a huge performance penalty even with one snapshot. To be more exact: the first snapshot has the greatest impact! vSAN does not suffer much from snapshot with sequential workload. Veeam Proxy for Linux has Problems with LVM

We had some problems with restoring VMs in the last time.After some research we found that the Proxy on Linux has a problem with the assignments of physical volumes. It seems that there are PVs of target machines are preserved in the LVM archive files of the proxy… This is causing problems at restore time – leaving the restored VMs unbootable.I have double checked the Veeam documentation about prerequisites (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/backup_proxy_requirements.html?ver=110) and found no hint that LVM is a problem with Linux proxy.The problem occurred with Suse Linux only, we are in the process to check if there is the same problem with RedHat Linux. To visualize the problem, I will show it from the Veeam Proxy perspective and from the target VMs perspective. Veeam ProxyList the physical volumes with pvs. One device is not found…Grep for the UUID of the missing volume in the directory /etc/lvm/archiveIn this case the UUID is found in three files. Veeam and Tape I: Moving a tape library with data from one VBR server to another

I had some special situation in the last weeks.A customer had two VBR server with one IBM TS4500 tape library connected to each sever. Now he wanted to consolidate to one VBR server, but he had to keep both libraries with all the data on the tapes.The Veeam helpcenter and the forum describe several tape library moving scenarios, but none with moving a library with data to another VBR server which has already data on it, too. I will call this server which is deinstalled in the process and whose repositories and library will be moved “source server” and the server which gets the repositories and library from the other server “target server” in the following text The target VBR server has data, a configuration backup restore of the source server is not suitable. With this all data on the target server is lost.VBR is at V11 P20210507 at both servers, so this is ok. It is ok to lose the History from one server, this is a huge advantage, too.After some planning we did the following procedure

[What (else) is new in v12 - I] New Hardened Repository integration

I would like to revive my old “what else is new” series I did for VBR v11 some time ago. This time, it is about v12 - what else?First part is about the new integration of Linux Hardened Repository. This was one of the greatest new features in v11. To bring the repository to VBR it was necessary to create a Linux repository and enable immutability. With v12, Hardened Repository is added by a new option: But there is more! With this, you can just add the repository with single-use credential. That was highly recommended in v11 recommended. Furthermore, after adding a Hardened Repository, immutability is enabled and cannot be disabled.  … even with PowerShell. I like it! Also because this increases security. If a hacker enters the VBR server, it is not possible to disable immutability any more. Check my post about how to monitor these settings with Veeam ONE.

While I was studying for the VMCE, a detail on deduplication caught my attention.I’m talking about inline deduplication. What's about?Inline deduplication is a feature offered by Veeam B&R and it’s used to reduce the amount of storage space required to store backup data by removing duplicate data. How to use the Data Domain repository mtree replica at the DR site?

Scenario:Very recently a customer asked me if Veeam could leverage Data Domain mtree replica for DR purposes.Of course, the answer is YES! While this idea is not new, I thought it would be a good reminder of Veeam’s backup import capabilities. Steps:You must use Data Domain repository on the source site. It most likely will be declared as a DDboost share. The mtree should be replicated to the DR site. Note that the mtree replica will be Read Only! The mtree replica needs to be exposed as a share over your protocol of choice (CIFS, DDboost), so it can be defined in the DR VBR server. In this example, I chose DDboost.Note again that this DDboost share is Read Only! The last step is to declare that DR DDboost share and import backups You should now be able to access these backups from the “Disk (Imported)” section. Remember that you will have to manually rescan that repository in order to refresh new “mtree replicated” restore points.

Can we copy a backup copy job?

Yes, Veeam can! (sorry for this pun)Question arose today and I thought this is could be interesting to share: Is it possible to copy a backup copy job? So can a backup copy job use a backup copy job as source job? Yes and no. It is not possible to select the copy backup job directly. But it is possible to select the repository, the (second) copy job searches for backup data. How to create a copy copy job:Start the New Backup Copy Job wizard and enter a name. Here it is required to use Periodic copy (pruning) Copy mode! Note: Source copy backup job can also use Immediate copy (mirroring) mode. On next step, press Add… → From backups...  and select the job you want to copy second time.It is important to do so, otherwise, selected source repository (next step) will be ignored!Press Source… and select the repository, the first copy job uses as target. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v6a Released

Veeam have today released the long-awaited update to Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 (VB365), v6a.This release has been overshadowed by Microsoft’s controversial changes being made to the Teams backup process, forcing vendors such as Veeam to cease using EWS as a mechanism to backup Teams data, instead insisting on the use of the Teams Graph API. Why is this controversial? Because the Teams Graph API is billable per query. Veeam - Hitachi Storage Plugin Installation How-To

These days I invested the possibility to programmatically export the same job log shown in VBR console (GUI). @JMeixner gave me the missing link. Now I want to share my outcome here.First, select the backup session of the job you want to get the log from. To select the job session run latest, you can do this with a command like this:$BackupSession = Get-VBRBackupSession -Name "Job 1*" | Sort-Object CreationTime | Select-Object -last 1Here the name of the job is actually "Job 1". But -Name is the name of the running job.
