Veeam Supported Products Reaching End of Life in 2022
After my last post highlighting the Veeam software that reaches end of support in 2022, I wanted to expand this further and discuss software that Veeam works with that will be approaching end of life in 2022. Why does this matter when I’m just trying to protect the data?Times change, and software changes with them, until it’s no longer supported. At any point, a patch to an operating system, a .NET framework update, or anything else really, could end up with the software no longer being backed up properly, or not working at all in production. Without valid support there’s no process to get a fix, and whilst your backup software may still be in support with Veeam, if the vendor won’t fix the problem, it’s time to start panicking. With this in mind, lets explore the software & operating systems being declared end of life in 2022 so we can start planning our upgrades/migrations if necessary. MicrosoftWe may as well start with one of, or potentially the largest software vendor in the wo
Log4j Vulnerability - What do you need to know?
Hi Everyone, Vulnerabilities wait for no-one, so whilst some are enjoying a weekend off, others are patching to protect against the latest risk. Log4j. This post has two objectives. Firstly I’m sharing my write up regarding the issues I’m aware DO have an impact to VMware, secondly what does this mean to the Veeam products… First up: VMwareI don’t often dedicate a blog post to a particular security vulnerability, but since it has scored a perfect 10 CVE rating, it’s important to be aware ASAP.VMware have identified multiple products that utilise the Apache technology that are vulnerable to the Log4j vulnerability. What is this “Log4j” vulnerability?A Remote Code Execution (RCE) has been discovered in Apache’s Log4j Java Library. It is possible to insert maliciously crafted strings into fields that will be logged, which then leverages the “message lookup substitution” function of Log4j to execute code. This can be used to deploy and execute payloads, or execute commands at a heightened
Veeam Products End of Support Reminder - 2022
Just a quick reminder to everyone that all good things must end at some point. The following products will no longer be supported by Veeam from the 1st January 2022.Veeam Backup & Replication 9.x Veeam ONE 9.x Veeam Disaster Recovery Orchestrator 2.0 (Formerly known as Veeam Availability Orchestrator) Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows v3 Veeam Agent for Linux v3Also in the near future is the end of support for the following products:Veeam Service Provider Console v3 (March 2022) Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 v3 (April 2022) Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 v4 (November 2022)You may be thinking “I haven’t seen an update for a long time for these products, I thought it was end of life anyway”. That’s because Veeam have a two-stage sunset policy for support. Stage One: End of FixWhen a Veeam product reaches end of fix, no further updates/patches or hotfixes are created for this as the general rule. In extreme case-by-case circumstances, an exception may be made. But you c
[Quicktip] Take care when using PowerShell cmdlet Remove-VBRSureBackupJob!
Yesterday I found a strange behavior in the Veeam PowerShell cmdlet Remove-VBRSureBackupJob. What happens: when you use this cmdlet to remove a certain SureBackup-Job using the parameter -Job, ALL SureBackup-Jobs will be deleted!. In my environment version 22.214.171.1247 P20210525 was used. It seems the be a bug. [update] In the meantime Veeam confirmed that it is a bug. Also in v11a!https://forums.veeam.com/powershell-f26/remove-vbrsurebackupjob-deletes-all-surebackup-jobs-t78189.htmlSo when you test or plan to using scripted SureBackups, do not use Remove-VBRSureBackupJob currently!
VMCA2022 training review
This week I was able to attend to a Veeam VMCA training (Veeam Backup & Replication V11: Architecture and Design) held by @poulpreben.VMCA IntroductionSome words on the VMCA: The VMCA is the Veeam Certificied Architect, the second and highest Veeam certification after the VMCE. While the VMCE is more focused on technical topics, the VMCA is all about designing the backup solution and learning the "Veeam Architecture Methodology".We already have great posts about the VMCA, both the course and the exam, here in the community, so I'll won't go too deep and link to the corresponding posts:VMCA2022 anouncment from @MicoolPaul:VMCA2022 review from @Chris.Childerhose:VMCA2022 EXAM review from @Michael Melter : VMCA CourseDirectly from the beginning of the course, we could notice how different this training is going to be compared to others.Preben explained to us, that there's no lab part and that we won't work with a Veeam console. Instead there were team exercises, where we work together
The Veeam Community Guide
Since we launched Veeam Community Hub one year ago, 11,199 members joined and we are very happy to see new members engaging, sharing the knowledge and helping each other.Community is rapidly growing, and I thought it would make sense to create a guide with the best practices on how to use community: what category to choose, what type of content to go with, what to do and what not to do.Let’s look into that!Veeam Community Hub is owned by Veeam Legends and Veeam Community. It’s community driven property. If you would like to talk to Veeam PM or submit a support ticket, please reach out to Veeam Support or Veeam R&D Forums All content in all categories apart from User Groups is in English. If you feel more comfortable with your local language, you are welcome to create posts in local user groups Do not publish empty posts with external links only. Just do not, please. This type of content will be hidden. It is absolutely OK to use external link as a reference to something though. E
Automate Instant Disk Recovery using the new FCD Restore API
Let's take a look at the new restore endpoints in the Veeam Backup and Replication API - For clarity, I am not talking about the Enterprise Manager API but the new api attached directly to your VBR install - This is future of automating VBR and I could not be more excited about having this decouple from Enterprise Manager. So, what is a first class disk? Essentially its bunch of capabilities that VMware have opened up in the vSphere API allowing for vendors (or you..) to create block devices independently of a virtual machine. Veeam have hooked into this allowing for you to restore individual disks from a restore point, they create a new datastore over their vPower NFS magic and make this disk available for consumption. High level steps we need to take programatically to make this work Perform the FCD restore using the Veeam B&R API Find the attached/restored file via the vSphere API (vStorageObjectManager) Reconfigure our target VM to attach the restored VMDK file sitting mounte
[Updated] Grafana Dashboard for Veeam Enterprise Manager
Greetings everyone, as you know I have been working on Grafana Dashboards across all Veeam RESTful APIs (the only one pending is VBA GCP), but as the time has passed, the releases and core products I was using have evolved as well…I am talking about the time-series I am using to store all the recollected data from the APIs. I was using InfluxDB v1.x (latest stable release is v1.8), but InfluxData is about to deprecate it and consider it end-of-life at the end of 2021. That left all the Community using it with the only option to go to InfluxDB v2.x, and start leveraging Flux, the new query language, which is extremely versatile btw.Introducing the new Grafana Dashboard for Veeam Enterprise Manager for InfluxDB v2 using Flux, and Grafana 8.xBefore go any further, I just wanted to thank tigattack who contributed to the Script that pushes the data to InfluxDB v2.0.Now, there it has been ton of work, as I needed to craft all the queries again from scratch converting legacy InfluxQL things l
