Malware Detection, Inline Entropy Scan – A Deeper Dive

Great article, complementing the one I had written. I arrive at the same conclusions as many of you: the Inline Entropy module remains quite vague in terms of information and requires thorough investigation. I have a question about malware detection using the File System Analysis module,do you have a warning in the job session in case of detection?  However, for those interested, here are some screenshots of the detection results🕵️‍♂️🔍: What VBR build # are you on?

VRO suggestions

Ed, the first place you should visit is the Hands-on Labs for VRO.  https://go.veeam.com/hands-on-lab-experience   The guide will walk you through connecting to VCenter and VBR in that sandbox environment.  There are a lot of steps, agreed, but once it is connected you are able to orchestrate any actions you would normally do through VBR and Vcenter to facilitate a recovery.Reach out to me directly if you would like to discuss.

About the VRO

As far as the purpose of VRO, it simply orchestrates actions you would normally perform manually as well as execute scripts that you have created to perform specific tasks.If you are tasked with manually testing your DR plan on a regular basis and maintaining the documentation then you should consider VRO.   Not only can you execute your DR plan in a sandbox environment to comply with testing requirements, your DR documentation and testing results can be saved to a pdf or printed off to hand to anyone needing proof of compliance.   By utilizing tags in vmware, your DR plans automatically update to include new workloads and your documentation is updated as well.

Big News Cohesity buys Veritas what will that mean for Veeam?

They probably got a great deal, the last time I checked, Veritas was experiencing negative growth.  How much do you have to pay to still be less than #3 in your market?

Also, to note, the analysis sensitivity setting does not impact performance.  This setting is a sensitivity setting.  You would adjust this setting, depending on the amount of encrypted data you have in your environment, to avoid false positives.

Deep dive Inline Malware Detection

Great writeup.  I want to emphasize the section @Stabz has on the “Malware Exclusion” list under “Global Exclusions”.  I’ve already heard from several customers that they do not want to enable inline scanning because they think it will tank their environement on that first full scan of the workloads as VBR gathers baseline data.  Exclude all of your workloads and then allow the scan to run on a couple to determine the proxy resources needed.  We show 20%-30% increase in CPU utlization on the proxy during that initial run, but results may vary.  This is a remarkable feature that every customer can take advantage of.

Notification when VBR Job is changed

Another reason to use “file copy job” to get an additional copy of your configuration database.  If there is a rogue actor changing your backup jobs, having more than one copy of your configuration database may prove useful if the job setup is complex.  (3-2-1 rule)

Problem restoring backups from multiple RDX tapes

Hi Stephen, there were no more replies to this topic in this community. So we got no feedback to the suggestion to try another drive to read the volume to be sure it is not a hardware fault. I don't know if the requester gave some feedback in the mentioned thread in Veeam forums.   I was referring to the Veeam thread.  It seemed to have died with no more information available.  Unfortunately, there are too many Veeam users out there with not enough experience with the product to follow best practices,  Learning by failure is not the best way to improve your DR plan.

VMware Corner or Virtualization Corner Maybe?

Nutanix Corner? Interesting  I’m pretty excited to see what Vmware can do now that they have parted from Dell.   However, while Vmware was being held back, Nutanix innovated pretty quickly and Veeam supported them along the way.   I don’t have any production Nutanix environments to manage, so I’m curious how things are going for Veeam admins on AHV platform.

Problem restoring backups from multiple RDX tapes

I’ve always used the HPE USB 3.0 device and the Tandberg Ethernet/iSCSI attached and have never had an issue.  I don’t see a resolution on the thread.  I’m not sure how it would be different than doing a “copy” job to any other storage device. RDX is just a spindle or SSD drive.  (RAID 1 RDX media, that sounds like a money maker.)A couple of steps missing on the thread, and the resolution is not posted either.  (Most likely it was in fact a hardware issue and there was no recovery.  If you follow 3-2-1, you will have an alternate media to recover from.)What happens when they try to rescan the backup file? Were there really no bangs in the backup indicating a CRC error? “As soon as a restore point is saved to the backup repository, Veeam Backup & Replication calculates CRC values for backup metadata and hash values for data blocks of a disk in the backup fil“e and saves these values in the metadata of the backup file, together with copied data.”Always tick the option for media healt

Rancher Desktop 1.0.0. Stable is now available

I just want to say that since I first started looking at K8’s in December of 2020 from complete ignorance, I’ve learned more and found more resources on this Kubernetes Korner than anywhere else.  It’s a great, non-ego environment and I love how you share the knowledge and experiences!   Keep up the great work and thanks for making this a magnetic community!!!

The problem was my thinking!  I was thinking backup plus copy to offsite time and not just “backup” time. Thank you for the explanation.If you could design some sort of Veeam obstacle course involving a squirrel and incorparate that into the videos we could get those YouTube views up highter. (-:

Fun Friday: What year did you first use Veeam?

I first installed it for a client in 2012 and started replacing all of my client base backups with it within weeks.  I had been using this fancy tool called “Fast SCP” for years before that and thought it was handy so maybe this backup software will be ok.  Then when I started learning about the company I realized that I had used a Ratmir tool several years earlier put out by Quest Software to migrate a client from Novell Groupwise to Microsoft Exchange.I was a repeat customer and didn’t even know it.

I spent some time over the weekend catching up on these and this is the only one that bugged me.  If the window is shortened why would you choose increasing the repository resources over more bandwidth?  Because 40Gbps is more than adequate?  If the bandwidth were significantly lower would you opt for more bandwidth over repo-power at that point? Thank you for these!

Nimble Storage Integration - Security Measure

Alletra is Latin for “you wiil be assimilated”.  I’m pretty sure the HPE sales team that lost way too many 3Par sales to Nimble (before they got smart and bought them) drove the rename and is sitting back laughing this very minute.  If you can’t them buy them.  Left Hand who?  As Veeam increases their storage integration footprint across more and more vendors, I think this type of security precaution should be first priority during setup.  I’ve repaired literally hundreds of bad Veeam installs just for performance issues, it needs to become second nature now to start checking off the security boxes like this.
