This week Anton Gostev talks about hardware for primary backup repositories. He discusses what kind of servers are used in the market and which advantages they have.Really a must-read.  I've recently talked to a number of our field folks regarding primary backup repositories they see our customers deploying these days and collected quite a bit of factual data that I think is worth sharing, as it should be helpful for your planning purposes. I also included some anecdotal information about the pricing just to give you an idea but keep in mind this will the price to channel without reseller margin (so you will pay slightly more) and this data came from one particular cost-sensitive region – so YMMV depending on where your company is located. Also, while I will be talking about HPE and Cisco offerings simply because these are "safe choices" used by the majority of our customers (both companies are our resell partners which explains this phenomena) this does not mean other vendors should

Good morning people,just one question from a sysadmin who’s looking to get VMCE.Is it possible to have exam without take the course?

Anyone else experiencing slow response from Veeam support in the last few months? I’ve had a couple of calls where I had to ask for updates on the call before I get any response back from Veeam support. I even had to escalate a call once because I wasn’t getting any feedback. Support engineers also don’t ask for remote sessions anymore and just send mails asking for more details.

Time for everyone to show their age  what version of Veeam did you first use?Bonus points if you remember the version of the first hypervisor you used it with!

Veeam Endpoint Backup (Free Version, Windows 7 32bitTrying to restore a Veeam Backup to a new hard drive but it can’t see the external drive. Has anyone had this problem. Please advise. Thanks

It occurred to me I haven’t done one of these about data protection yet, so here we are. Tell us a short story of the worst excuse given for an outage you’ve experienced, here’s mine: Worst Excuse Given:Earlier this year, users of Amazon’s EU-CENTRAL-1 region had issues within a particular availability zone. Amazon claimed they had an increased API error rate and latencies for EC2 APIs and connectivity issues due to “an increase in ambient temperature within a subsection of the affected Availability Zone”.This is technically correct, as the datacentre was on fire!Corey Quinn on Twitter: "BREAKING: There is currently a fire in a data center that's part of @awscloud's eu-central-1 region. Impact limited to a single AZ, obviously. All humans reportedly safe." / Twitter Once again, it goes without saying, check your backups, adhere to the 3-2-1-1-0 rule, protect your data!

Quick question to the community -We are troubleshooting some Linux XFS SOBR issues.  I know for ReFS you need to use the Data Locality policy for the Fast Cloning and wondered would the same apply to XFS?I would think that it does but on the off chance I can change it to the Performance policy it might help us get over the hump for our issues and then I can swap it back. These repos are NOT immutable at the moment either.

Hi All Had a case open with VEEAM and NetApp neither of which is going anywhere pretty quickly, so will throw it out there and see if anyone has any ideas.We have a large estate broken down in to areas which mirror the configuration of each other so a nice lot of reference points.NetApp 16Tb LUN and 16TB volume mapped to a Veeam backup server.The client wrote a lot of data to this back up location and took it offline. So we cleared snapshots down and brought it back online. When the mapped drive was browsed it could be seen there was a lot (TBs + TBs) of “Dead” VM backup files VEEAM advised these could be deleted which they were.However the adjustment hasnt carried through to the storage end VEEAM UI thinks there is 11.9 Tb free NetApp only 2 Tb ** After Storage Snapshot removal Have stopped the jobs reset the storage passwordRe-scanned the storageRe-scanned the appropriate repository.Any thoughts at all ..? P

Veeam have snuck this update out late in the day! Veeam Backup for Office 365 5c has been released! Full notes hereIn addition to the key Teams bug fix that has been doing the rounds as a hotfix there seem to be mainly other Teams related fixes such as inability to backup chat messages newer than October 2020 and Backup Proxies out of memory when backing up to object storage! Time to get patching! Thanks @Mildur for clarifying it’s a CU for 5c as 5c was released earlier this year!

Hi,We’re a long time user of Veeam B&R and it’s worked very well for our on-site backups.I’m now testing/evaluating Veeam Cloud Connect with a UK based Veeam CSP (PeaSoup) to additionally backup some of our critical VMs to a Cloud Repository. This is a 5TB trial, but I’m not sure if this has any bearing on my question.This is my scenario:When running a Cloud Connect Backup Copy Job containing 15 VMs only 2 of these VMs will ever be running/active concurrently. The other VMs will be “Waiting for backup infrastructure resources availabilty” until 1 of the active backups completes and then the remaining VMs are processed sequentially; but never more than 2 concurrently. Whilst I understand what this means, I’d like to know what “decides” this limitation.So my questions:Is it an internal Veeam algorithm, available bandwidth or is it the Cloud Service Provider that “decides” this? As a trial user is it possible that we’re being limited to 2 concurrent connections by the CSP? Is it a “ha

Hello there,I want to execute a shell script inside a guest Linux VM automatically after a backup job is completed. I wonder how can i achieve this. What is the best way for me to do this?

I have a customer that needed to rebuild the Windows VM that was acting as their Proxy/Repository server at their secondary site.    He is using all of the same IP information on the new server.   The repository itself is on a NetApp E-Series access via iSCSI.   Once the server is rebuilt, what is the process for getting it back into the B&R server.   If the server is the same name, will the B&R server just need to push out the Veeam proxy/repository services to the rebuilt VM or will we need to delete and re-add the proxy and repository to Veeam?   If we discovery the repository LUNs on the new VM via iSCSI will we need to re-scan the repository to discover the backups or will they just be there?If there is a process document for doing this it would be appreciated.

Hello,I created a new backup job only for Mail and Archive 2 weeks ago, it was working fine doing the full backup, but today I found that it was frozen, I restarted the Windows Server (weard, it took too much time), but I cannot start the job manually again, I receive a message “synhronisation failed”, I reconfigured the organization authentication but it doesn’t, also now when I try to rescan the proxy (that is the same server), there is an error: “this request operation sent to net.tcp://127.0.0.1:9193/ProxyAdmin did not receive a reply within the configured timeout (00:01:00)”. I tried to restart the Veeam Proxy Service, however it didn’t work, then I restarted the server again (it took too much time again) now the Veeam Proxy Service is up again, but the problem persists.Do you have any idea?Thanks in advance. Omar De Souza.

Hello, We have a Veeam Backup O365 5.0.1.225 with a new backup job created two weeks ago, only for Mail and Archive. I think that the performance is too slow, the processing rate is 5.4MB/s, bottleneck: source, read rate 3.9MB/s and write rate 5.8MB/s. Is that normal? Our bandwidth to Internet is 280Mbps  (35MB/s), download and upload,how can I troubleshooting this problem? Thanks in advance, Omar De Souza.
