ReFS issues with latest Windows Server Updates (KB5009624, KB5009557, KB5009555)

Just a quick post; the latest Windows Server updates for 2012R2, 2019 and 2022 (haven’t seen 2016) can cause ReFS issues. After the installation, ReFS volumes are shown as RAW and are no longer accessible; so if you’re using ReFS for your repositories, then take be aware of this when installating the update. Besides that, those updates can also cause bootloops for domain controllers and break Hyper-V.Depending on your Windows Server version one of the following updates could have caused the issue: KB5009624, KB5009557, KB5009555 If you’re affected then removing the mentioned update should solve the issue. Don’t (!) try to repair the ReFS volume, because this could cause a dataloss.This should remind everyone why 3-2-1 for Backups is so important. Veeam v11: Continuous Data Protection (CDP) configuration

Continuous Data Protection (CDP) is a new feature provided by the upcoming Veeam VBR v11 mainly addressed for Tier-1 applications that cannot deal with data loss.Announced for a long time, the CDP technology allows you to configure the RPO Per Second and this can be done leveraging vSphere API for IO Filtering (VAIO). Install the Continuous Data Protection filter to hosts First step is the installation of the CDP filter to the hosts member of the cluster. The installation takes place in the Managed Servers section under Backup Infrastructure area. Testing communication ports with PowerShell (Without Telnet)

During troubleshooting a backup environment, it’s common the necessity of test ports responsivity of our backup servers, like Veeam backup server, mount server, proxy or repositories.We normally do that with telnet. However, by default telnet client is not installed during Windows Server and the Veeam Backup Server often is our principal component our backup infrastructure.So, if you want to test some communication port without install telnet client, you can use PowerShell for it.Use the sintax below:Test-NetConnection -ComputerName <IP> -Port <port>Here is an example for the command:An interesting point is that if the communication port is not well succeeded, the utility make an aditional ping test:

How to remove a restore point?

The restore point was created at 10/4, but the VIB file was remove from the disk already, on the resotre point portal, it still show normal status for this resotre point, so i cannot remove it.  Also try to rescan bakcup repo, it say below:added 0 unencrypted, added 0 encrypted, updated 0, removed 0, skipped 1, failed 0

Windows Server 2022 Released – What to remember before you start upgrading!

Microsoft dropped a surprise on us today by releasing Windows Server 2022 to no fanfare at all. It’s been released today 18th August 2021, it will have mainstream support until the 13th October 2026 and will be considered end of life on the 14th October 2031 (how are we talking about the 2030’s already?!). Veeam errors, newbie here: Unable to apply retention policy. Failed to delete backup files

Hi, I have not been inside Veeam for a while. I am getting errors as in the snapshot below:I understand it is complaining about storage space for backups but I am trying to zero in on what to attack first here. The one that interests me is “Unable to apply retention policy: failed to delete backup files error…...is locked by running session xxx-xxx [Instant recovery]. Is Veeam just too busy to start the backup because it could not apply retention policy? Not sure which item to investigate first...ar

Issue with USB recovery drive booting on windows 11

I’m have question about the usb recovery drive. For some reason the recovery will not boot into the bare metal utility, it stops and shows a command window. I’m running latest windows 11 so any thoughts as to why this would be?thanks

Error: Unstable connection: unable to transmit data.

Hello there,I have a backup job which was going seamlessly. but in the last days it was failing after reaching 80% with error message attached below. I tried the job by disabling firewall rules nothing new occurred. All backup infrastructure components are working fine for other VMs. I have also checked firewall logs but there is nothing blocked related to this backup.Error message:Error: Unstable connection: unable to transmit data. Failed to upload disk. Skipped arguments: [vddkConnSpec>]; Agent failed to process method {DataTransfer.SyncDisk}. Exception from server: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host Unable to retrieve next block transmission command. Number of already processed blocks: [11956]. Failed to download disk 'VM-Name.vmdk'. I need to figure out how to resolve this issue immediately.

How to temporarily turn off MS O365 throttling

When you will download data from Exchange Online – Microsoft will throttle your traffic. In previous years to change it, you should open a support ticket to MS. Now you can temporarily change this directly on Microsoft 365 admin center. This can be especially useful for initial full backup for multiple mailboxes. How to setup this? Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and in the top right corner open help and just type “ews”. Then you have to run tests as a results you will have option to select duration 30, 60 or 90 days with higher throughput speed.select one of available value and update settings.

Failed to upgrade host components

Hello, Recently, the Veeam B&R server was updated to the 11.1.0. (). When I first opened Veeam Console, The “Components Update” wizard was initiated and the update processes were started. The update of the veeam server failed with the status “Failed to upgrade host components. Error: 'Error 1714. The older version of Veeam Agent for Linux Redistributable cannot be removed.” What can I try?

Veeam does not send automated emails but email test configuration works

Hi everyone, i’ve been having this problem for a while now…Email notifications after backup completion are not being sent anymore to the specified email address, but when i test the credentials the email arrives successfully to my email account. I’m using the Veeam Agent 5.0 on a windows server 2012 r2. No veeam B&R is implied, just the agent making backups to a local disk.Additional informations:i recently changed the email server for the email account, before changing it everything was fine and the backup emails arrived, so at a first glance it seemed a problem with the email server; but i made a clean installation of veeam agent 5.0 on another server, using the same credentials, and the emails for the backup job are arriving regularly; so this excludes the fact that it may be a problem of the new email server(and also the fact that the email tests arrive without any problem).So i thought this may be a problem related to some veeam files regarding the old installation, so here’s

Error when adding hyper-v 2019 standalone on veeam B&R 11 installed in windows server 2016

Hi every body,Please i need help to add hyper-v2019 on veeam B&R11 installed in windows server 2016 standard virtual machine. When i add the host hyper-v2019 i have the error bellow :“Failed to connect to host Access denied or timeout expired.Check if you have local administrator privileges on computer .Possible reasons:Invalid credentials.Specified host is not a Hyper-V server. (System.Exception)”But i add hyper-v2016 on the same veeam B&R11 successfully.the account i use in veeam is added in the hyper-v 2019 host local administrator groupFile and printing share is active and authorized in windows firewall in the hyper-v 2019 host. i can open the folder \\hyper-v 2019 host\c$ successfully on the virtual machine in which veeam B&R11 is installed.Thanks

Vulnerability in Veeam Backup & Replication - March 2023

Veeam has just informed it’s customers about an existing vulnerability in Veeam Backup & Replication. Unauthorized users may be able to request encrypted credentials from the VBR service, and therefore get access to the backup infrastructure. The KB articles haven’t received updates so far, but the vulnerability did get a CVSSv3 score of 7.5.EDIT: The KB article has just been published: KB4424It’s recommended to patch VBR as soon as possible!SolutionPatches have been released for VBR V11 and V12. Please keep in mind that older releases are also affected, but no longer get fixes. So you need to upgrade your installation to a supported release.Patch for Veeam V11a KB article for V11 Patch for Veeam V12 KB article for V12WorkaroundAs a temporary workaround you can block access to TCP port 9401 on your Veeam Backup & Replication server. Need Help Diagnosing Slow Backup Speed..

Hey Veeam Community,I am having a problem backing up my personal workstation to an external hard drive.I am using the free version of Veeam Agent for Windows.When I backup, my main (C:) Internal SSD shows:Local SSD (C:) (476.1 GB) 262.5 GB read at 142 MB/sHowever, my other Internal SSD ‘terabyte’ (X:)Terabyte (X:) (953.9 GB) 3.8 GB read at 4 MB/s.I benchmarked both of my drives with CrystalDiskMark and they both got good similar results being Sata SSD’s, so the X: drive should not be this slow.I’ve tried swapping sata ports, changing cables, disable throttling when system is in use, etc. Nothing seems to help.Can anyone help me diagnose what is causing one drive to backup so much faster? Thanks, Mike

Credentials for SQL DB backup (VeeamBackup DB)

Hello, I need to create a SQL DB backup for VeeamBackup DB (VBR 10). I’m using MS SQL Server Management Studio with Windows Authentication however the DB is not accessible with this user, do I need to use SQL Server Authentication with th “sa” user? if yes, I don’t have the password, is there a default password? if no, can I try to reset this password without problems? Thanks for your help, Omar De Souza.
