Using S3 Object Lock’s Governance mode with Veeam Backup & Replication v12.1 Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) v12.1, which was launched in December of 2023, has many great features and new capabilities.  One of those features is the ability to use S3 Object Lock’s Governance mode when you setup an object storage repository to be immutable.  The purpose of this blog is to introduce you to the Governance mode and how to use it within VBR 12.1.So, what is Governance mode?  To answer that I first need to briefly explain S3 Object Lock.  It is a feature of S3 and S3 Compatible object storage to prevent objects from being deleted or modified until the object lock retention has been met and the lock expires. There are two modes for the object lock retentionCompliance GovernanceCompliance mode has been used by Veeam Backup & Replication since v10 of VBR was released in February of 2020.  Compliance mode locks the objects with a high level of strictness.  This strictness includes: p

One of the standout features in Veeam’s arsenal is the ability to verify backups in an isolated VMWare and / or Hyper-V environment using SureBackup and DataLabs. These tools allow organizations to automatically spin up virtual machine and agent-based backups in a secure, sandboxed network…. often referred to as a “Clean room”, where Veeam can (but not limited to):Ensure the backup does not contain any malware / ransomware / virus’ Check for file system consistency Verify application services start as expected Perform custom script checks to validate functionalityWhile these capabilities shine in an on-premises VMware and Hyper-V environment, verifying backups in Azure brings a different set of technical challenges:No vSwitch / vRouter control in Azure Lack of deep VM network customization No ability to intercept or NAT Traffic Azure resource constraints and API GapsWhile Azure presents challenges, the importance of verified, clean backups remain critical. Even with these challenges, w

For those with IBM Flash System Storage, you will have noticed a surprise at the end of your 12.2 upgrade. It will ask you to install the plug-in on your Veeam server at the end of the process. It will also tell you that backup jobs may not work properly until you do. The first take away is don’t start this upgrade at 3PM on a Friday thinking you have plenty of time to upgrade your entire Veeam infrastructure before the end of the day.  This extra step didn’t take too long but still added some extra time to the process. As with anything, check the release notes, and compatibility with all hardware, software, and firmware before doing installs on production servers.   This is a very simple install that requires hitting next a few times and waiting.  Setup In this test, I’m using both backup from storage snapshots, as well as snapshot only jobs. Snapshot jobs are easy to configure as seen below. For the backup repository, choose snapshot only. If you configure a secondary destination, you

I had the discussion two times last week, so I think it is worth sharing here. You may have noticed, VMware deprecated image level backup of its vCenter Appliance (VCSA) with vSphere 7. What does this mean? Basically, it is still supported to do image level backup and restore with VCSA 7.0. But it will not be supported in future releases. Notice that U1 and U2 are still 7.0 versions. With 7.n, with n>0, VMware will not support image restore of VCSA any more. From my perspective, this step was taken because problems arise when restoring this Linux appliance. I have seen many appliances requiring a filesystem check after restore or crash. When you are lucky, everything works fine afterwards. If not, you have to file a support ticket. To avoid this, VMware offers a new way for VCSA backup. Since 6.5 it is possible to run file-based backups and restore of VCSA. Since 6.7 this can be scheduled. With this, new protocols are supported as well: FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, SFTP, NFS, or SMB. Pleas

If you have usecase to change location (disk) of PostgreSQL binaries with databases, where is not an option by Veeam wizard and change user, and if you need to change from default postgres user to different one. Or only one of the option. My usecase is to change from D:\ to E:\ drive and change back from non-standard user veeam to postgres due custom installation of PostgreSQL.Changing user of databases is possible, but not for templates, so easy. This usecase is for administrators with minimal knowledge, so via easiest way :) Stop Veeam Services After Veeam application is down, change on PostgreSQL could be provided.First is needed to create postgres user as is missing due custom installation (not via Veeam wizard). When discussing Azure App Registrations backup and recovery, one question that often comes up is, “How does Veeam handle secrets and certificates that are embedded within these registrations?”. It is a great question and I wanted to take the opportunity to double click on this.Client Secrets:Client secrets in App Registrations are treated similarly to passwords. Once a secret is created, its value is only displayed once and is never retrievable again. This behaviour is by design, enforced by Azure and Microsoft Graph to maintain strong security hygiene. It is because of this that:Veeam does not back up or restore the actual secret values as that data is not exposed by the Microsoft Graph API. Veeam does capture metadata such as secret names, creation dates, expiration dates, and key identifiers. The secret value itself must be stored securely elsewhere, such as in Azure Key Vault, at the time of creation. Here is a great post from @johan.h which shares how to leverage Veeam to protect

Out-of-the-Box Immutability (Ootbi) is a purpose-built backup storage appliance developed by the founders of Veeam, specifically for Veeam!OOTBI delivers secure, simple, and powerful on-premises backup storage without requiring any security expertise. It will interest you to know that we have discussed extensively the steps to set up, configure and integrate OOTBI with Veeam. Please refer to the following links on the steps to set up and configure a physical appliance. If you're unable to test or purchase the physical appliance, you can still explore OOTBI using the virtual Storage Appliance (vSA) in a virtual environment, as demonstrated in this guide. If you have access to a vSphere environment, follow the steps below to set it up in your labIn this guide, I’ll show you how to deploy the VSA in a Proxmox VE environment. Additionally, here’s a complementary resource showcasing Veeam Hardened Repository (VHR) installed and configured on Proxmox VE.Note: Because you cannot run a Type 2 h

Dear Community,My recommendations: before upgrading the VBR Application, first upgrade the connected appliance.Upgrading the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud (VBGC) appliance from version 5 to version 6 is a significant process that involves an automated sequence of steps. This upgrade not only updates the VBGC software but also transitions the underlying operating system and database to newer versions. In this article, I share my firsthand experience with the upgrade, detailing each step and highlighting important considerations to ensure a smooth transition. Prerequisites before initiating the upgrade:Green Highlighted is very Important Part and all upgrade depend on it.Verify Compatibility: Ensure that your current VBGC version is 3.0 or later. Backup Configurations: Although the upgrade process creates a snapshot, it's advisable to manually back up your configurations. Check Permissions: Confirm that the service account used has the necessary permissions, including compute.instances.s

Greetings, community! For years, I have been working with many, if not all, Veeam APIs to build gorgeous dashboards and visualizations in Grafana, but I always had in my mind on using the truly comprehensive Veeam ONE API to build the Dashboard of Dashboards, or the Supreme View as Veeam ONE has pretty much all the other products information, and even more. Small spoiler: Since upcoming v13, even the Reports would available from API!!!!!Grafana Dashboards for Veeam ONE APII have prepared two views, for now, using Veeam ONE API, views that include absolutely everything (Onprem ALL Hypervisors, All Job Types, Public Cloud, and even VB365!). When you finish this article, if you follow all the steps, you should have something similar to this. It might be different in content of course depending of your environment.Job/Policy History like never seen beforeProtected Workloads view, including pretty much all platforms. I am back with another PowerShell tip and again one more for the VB365 product. This one shows you how you can run a simple script to create all the required Windows Firewall rules for the VB365 component servers. You can check it out here - https://just-virtualization.tech/2025/06/03/powershell-tips-for-veeam-vb365-v8-firewall-rules/ PowerShell Tips for Veeam – VB365 v8.1 – Firewall RulesToday, I will discuss another interesting PowerShell script that I created. It allows you to add the necessary firewall rules to each server component in your Veeam VB365 Backup environment.Security is a necessity, especially when it comes to large projects for Government entities. So, the project I am working on needs to keep the Windows firewall turned on but allow all VB365 components to talk to each other on the required ports. That is where this script was born, and it also creates a group called “Veeam” to put the rules in so when you look in your firewall settings, you can sort by group and find

Ever scratched your head trying to figure out the real difference between deploying Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 yourself versus opting for Veeam Data Cloud for M365? You're not alone! It's a common point of confusion that pops up in many of my demos. This post is here to clear the air, breaking down the distinct versions, deployment options, and how this powerful product has evolved to protect your Microsoft 365 data. When you hear "Veeam data cloud for M365," you're likely referring to Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 (VBM365), Veeam's dedicated solution for protecting your critical Microsoft 365 data. Unlike some cloud services that have completely distinct product lines, VBM365 has evolved through significant version releases, each adding powerful new capabilities. Furthermore, how you deploy and consume VBM365 can also feel like a "different version" of the service.Let's break down these distinctions:The Evolution of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365: Feature by FeatureVBM365 isn't a

VeeamON 2025 was a little over a month ago, and with it left a trail of new announcements and updates to soak in with its passing. This event is a huge event for everyone in the Veeam ecosystem, this means, customers, partners, community members and Veeam employees. This event is the premier event for data resilience, with deep dive content, platform announcements, networking opportunities and celebrations. During the keynote, we heard many of the features that are being included in the next version of the Veeam Data Platform –version 13! Along with all the announcements involving Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Data Cloud and new security integrations, came announcements about Veeam ONE’s new scalability and feature enhancements. This year, I had the opportunity to discuss these new features coming in Veeam ONE v13 (included in Veeam Data Platform Advanced and Premium) and beyond. This product has been one of my go-to products at Veeam since I started, it tells us so much about

In the June edition of the "RegKey of the Month" series, weelves into the Veeam registry key called BackupCopyMirrorAll. This hidden setting enables Backup Copy jobs in Immediate mode to replicate the entire backup history, not just the latest chain.By adding this registry key on the Veeam backup server and specifying the relevant job names, users can automate the mirroring of all restore points during the first synchronization. This approach is particularly beneficial for scenarios like offsite seeding or full backup migrations. However, it's important to note that the copied backups will adhere to the retention policies of the copy job, not the source. For detailed instructions and use cases, read the full post:👉 https://integriservices.blogspot.com/2025/06/regkey-of-month-june.html

Hello Community!A few weeks ago at VeeamON in San Diego, the “Veeam Team” showed off a bit more of the new VDP v13 on Linux than what they did at VON2024. BTW, yes, it can still be installed on Windows if Linux still frightens you a bit 😜 ..more on this just below*.One new feature they showed off was the ability to configure Veeam Backup & Replication High Availability. In this Part 1 post, I will show how to do initial setup and then configure it. In my Part 2 post, I’ll show how to perform a quick failover so you can see how easy it is.A few Disclaimers:As you may be aware, the version of VBR I’m using is a BETA preview, so buttons, config links, and menus may be different at the time VBR v13 goes GA. Also, as with most any HA setups, enabling HA has a syncing mechanism between the primary and secondary nodes, and thus is not a backup. In other words, if something within the guest OS or Veeam gets “hosed” on the primary node, it will get sync’d (transferred) to the secondary nod

Hello everyone,Due to Im working in improving my lab a little bit, I dismatle the whole thing, and I started from Scratch,I already posted my Windows server 2025 Installation, and now, is time to connect to those machines in a “confortable” way. (Spanish)Also I had in the past Apache Guacamle, wich work great, but I wanted to give it a try to have more tools and experiences. I do like HTML 5 due to the compatibility with all my devices, Macbook, PC, iPhone, Ipad, etc…So, today, I want to show you this little tool:FreeRDP HTML5 proxy on WindowsIm going to install it, and then to connect to my Windows machines via RDP over HTML 5, very convinient and flexible. Lets download the msi file, then, lets trigger the installation. As always, installation is very straight forwardOh! it has OpenStack integrationLocal connection, 127.0.0.1:8000 connects to the clientAfter reboot, you can access from other machines to the FreeRDP Web Client on your networkHere is a test, Windows Server 2025 accessed

Dear Community, Yesterday, I attended a live session and heard about MTTR, and as Veeam Community members, we continually seek ways to enhance the resilience, reliability, and efficiency of our backup environments.Whether you are protecting virtual machines, physical workloads, or cloud-native apps, understanding operational metrics like MTBF, MTTR, MTTA, and MTTF can offer actionable insights. These are not just technical acronyms; they are essential for ensuring your backup infrastructure delivers high availability and rapid recoverability. What Are These Metrics? 1. MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) Definition: The average time between hardware or system failures. In Veeam: MTBF can help evaluate the reliability of backup storage, proxies, and even the Veeam Backup & Replication server itself. If you are experiencing frequent job interruptions, a low MTBF could indicate underlying issues in your environment. 2. MTTR (Mean Time To Recovery/Repair) Definition: The average time tak

PostgreSQL is a relational database management system (RDBMS) for storing and managing data. The default installations of Veeam Backup & Replication from v12 uses PostgreSQL. This is due to various reasons as described in the following articles: how to Migrate Veeam Configuration Database to PostgreSQL Server.Steps to move Veeam Configuration Database to PostgreSQL Server | Veeam Community Resource Hub Note: At the time of writing this guide, Veeam still recommended to use Microsoft SQL Server when you backup more than 5000 VMs. There are numerous reasons for upgrading the PostgreSQL Engine used by VBR? I will therefore refer you to the following release note. Determine the PostgreSQL version and BackupBefore proceeding, verify Veeam’s official support for the target PostgreSQL version (system requirements for the compatibility list). At the time of writing this article, Veeam currently supports “local or remote” installation of the following versions of PostgreSQL instance for the

I thought I'd put together a post describing my journey as a Veeam legend and how I managed to get accepted into the programme. My journey as a Veeam Legend started in August 23 as a part of the 2nd intake of 2023. It was a proud moment to get accepted into the group but how did I get here and what has being part of the program given me.With over 30 years experience in the IT industry, I've spent the last 10 Years focusing on Infrastructure and Data Protection from a Service Provider perspective and this is where I was initially introduced to the Veeam platform. It was during this time that I became aware of the Veeam R&D Forums (https://forums.veeam.com/). Over the years I started to interact more answering posts and providing guidance where I knew it added value as well as seeking Feature Requests.  In Feb 21 I became aware of the Community Hub (https://community.veeam.com/) and started to interact with the community there as well. I found the groups particularly useful and watchi

Support for Proxmox from Veeam has been one of the top requests in the last months. Therefore the announcement in May to extend the Hypervisor support to Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) has been long awaited! This will be the 7th virtualization platform supported by Veeam, in addition to the 3 cloud hyperscalers and the Veeam agents. The Proxmox integration is currently planned for Q3 of 2024 and v1 will already include some nice features/benefits:flexible storage options immutable backups granular recovery cross-platform recovery (for example Proxmox <> VMware) Veeam ‘standard’ performance with CBT, hot add backup and BitlookerIn part 1 of this blog series I want to give a quick overview of the architecture of Veeam Backup for Proxmox and it’s initial setup. Disclaimer: All information and screenshots in this blog post are based on an early access release. Until the final release changes can and will occur! ArchitectureThe Proxmox integration itself will be enabled with an addit

Recently i came across an issue with the Linux nosnap Agent running on an IBM Power (ppc) architecture. So since those systems are not so common as x86 there is not a whole lot Information out there, why i thought this could be interesting for some. So first of all: The rollout of the Agent is not your typical “Create Protection Group-->Push Agent” but you have to do it through the “Predefined Agent” method: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/agents/protection_group_packages.html?ver=120 The customers systems hosted Databases (MAXDB) which we backed up in a seperate job with a pre script. This Script dumped the DB and Logs and after that we backed up the Volume. Which means we wanted to create a second job which backed up only the remaining volumes, so we chose “Volume Level Backup”.The Issue was that there is a limitation in the documentation:https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agentforlinux/userguide/system_requirements_nosnap.html?ver=60The amount of space required for LVM sn

During the latest local Veeam User Group in Belgium, we presented a Veeam Agent for Linux deep dive specifically around the CBT driver. In the past, I’ve seen a lot of confusion about this topic leading to people installing just everything. In this small post, I just wanted to summarise some of the findings that were presented and hopefully it will help somebody in the future. So first of all, what is the CBT driver or Kernel module that we ship. Well the CBT driver allows us to do two thingsCreate snapshots on block devices Create a tracking of the blocks that are changed between backups. This improves incremental backup as we only need to read the changed dataThere are two kinds of drivers. The reason being that some of the kernel functionality that the initial driver, “veeamsnap” was using have been deprecated. Therefore as a company, Veeam has decided to add new functionality in the Linux kernel (there is an ongoing effort to get it in the main kernel sources). The new driver “blksn
