Hi Everyone,Recently I took an old powerful desktop and leveraged Proxmox in order to turn it into a cheap and non intrusive (furniture wise) virtual lab. My previous lab was an old but pretty powerful IBM Thinkpad. I was not using virtualisation just various flavours of Kubernetes on an Ubuntu 20.04 server OS. Old ThinkpadI had done quite a bit of work on my old lab despite its humble characteristics and I was also thinking about re-inventing this laptop with some mini Linux distribution or even FreeBSD. I had already setup a VBR server in my Proxmox setup with a Linux repository so I added my Thinkpad to a protection group, installed the agent and ran a full backup. This was easy enough and I believe has been covered here many times so I will jump to the BMR restore.I downloaded the Linux recovery media from Veeam and created a new empty VM in Proxmox and set it to boot from the ISONew VM After booting the VM I connected the console where I saw a message stating that if I was

Hi Everyone.I finally renewed my CKA yesterday. Overall the exam experience was good. The 3 years of experience since the last time was a huge help as of course Kodekloud’s course and Mock Exam series. I also did KillerShell’s practice exam that you get free from the Linux Foundation after purchasing the exam. One issue I had with the new Remote Desktop was that on my laptop screen I had to constantly resize the terminal and windows. I think you can use an external screen and for the next LF exam I do that will be the route to take. For these types of exam time management is very important so you don't want to be spending precious time resizing windows 😃.

Another possible topic for a future VMCE study group 😃.We are not robots, although sometimes on a Monday morning I sure do to feel like one. I think that there are very few of us out there you can claim that our performance is always consistent. There are some people who I would term are forever 1 + 1 = 2. However, I know for a fact that I can be 1 + 1 =20 on a certain days, and before I quit drinking beer you could have stuck a random number generator in that equation for all my consistency was worth.We often hear about great athletes, artists and others talking about being in the “zone”. As I understand it this is a state where things are just flowing, complications become easy and performance is optimal. Whatever you want to call such a state we can probably all agree that there are times when we feel that we are getting the best out of ourselves and times when we are not. Hi Everyone,This morning I went and took the V12 Exam. There were some huge non related hurdles involved but in the end all was good. To start with the night before I got some other news that kept me awake for most of the night. You know something not awful, not great but enough to… keep your brain working. Then you start to get annoyed as you know that you have to sleep for the exam BUT getting annoyed also keeps your brain alert. In the morning I was completely exhausted. To make matters worse Winter decided to show up and it was freezing. I decided to go to a testing center which now after the pandemic are all located way out in Polar bear land. The transit app lied about the bus arrival time and I froze, then the transit app lied again about the second bus. Then I arrived and the test center folks did not show up 15 minutes early anyways so I was left to wander in the vast waste lands of suburbia parking lots with a billion mile an hour wind attacking me.Finally I got in and sat do

Moving your blog, alternatives, methods?

Hi Everyone, I am planning on moving my blog. What seemed like a great deal at the time has turned into an expensive auto-renewal at the worst possible time. Luckily I changed my CC so .. 😁 no auto delete $$ this year. What are the alternatives? What do people pay? What is the best method to download my present blog content? Any help would be appreciated.

Home Lab Special Section?

Hi Everyone,I have moved forward on my home lab. Proxmox is installed and I am finding it very intuitive. I now have to see about what I can do about a Veeam setup (can I nest a Veeam supported Hypervizor in there etc). I have also added one of those ethernet over power lines connections to my basement. That also seems to be working perfectly, hooray no need to rip out walls for cabling. I got to thinking though, so many of us need to test and play with Veeam outside of work confines and the info about home labs is scattered all over the site in different posts. Do people think it would be helpful to have a separate Home Lab section. This is a place where newbies or people re-thinking their setup could come with the ultimate goal of getting more lab exposure to Veeam. Or should we just leave as be and use the search function? What does everyone think? Again I don’t know how feasible this would be and it would not be a new group per-se. Just an idea.

Anybody tried Proxmox?

Hi Everyone, There are times that I think that my head has been stuck in the sand when it comes to technology. Maybe I just don’t read enough 😅. While forcing myself to consider black Friday/cyber Monday upgrades for my beleaguered home lab I stumbled upon Proxmox. Debian based KVM level 1 Hypervisor. Since I may go the route of purchasing an old powerful desktop I need something (free) that can help be getting vms’ running. Esx free won’t let me use API’s for Veeam backups anyways and I don’t know of any ways of getting a full working license other than time trial or attempting to become a vexpert (please correct me if I am wrong) I wanted to go with something else. I could just build KVM on top of a linux distribution myself but it would be nice to have something ready to go that has a community forum available.Have any of you used Proxmox? and if so what are your thoughts about it?https://www.proxmox.com/en/cheers

Hi Everyone,All IT folks are secret hoarders. Come on admit it. I bet if we look in your basement we will find a ton of old computer equipment that is being kept “just in case”. I won’t even start about the cable jungle that grows down there. The older you get the more serious you become at your IT collection efforts. I recently scored an old Dell Chromebook that had been generously broken (i.e. put in developer mode in order to remove the dead ChromeOS and install Linux) by some developer (can’t remember if that is allowed or not so if need be I can provide the person’s address to the appropriate authorities while I play the victim.In fact this is allowed as they force you to press control L every time you want to boot in wild mode otherwise it goes and wipes the disk. However, I digress. Lets see what this power monster can do. I will pull out a terminal and inspect. Just to add the Linux Mate Desktop is installed which is quite lightweight and does not appear to be hogging resources

Security so tight, you need to break the rules to be able to work?

HI Everyone,This post was inspired by our conversation on the KubeKorner about my (in the past 😁) using notepad and vim to great text files with info, how to’s, solutions to issues. I reminded me of all the times that I have seen people do the same for passwords that are tightly stored away in password managers or other locations that require “extra effort” to gain access too. This made me think back to my career and the many incidents where I saw shortcuts taken in order to be able to work more effectively because of strict security measures.The most hilarious thing that I ever saw was at one job where the security team were on steroid. There was a door to a confidential location that would automatically close and lock after you typed in your very long and annoying individual code on the small panel. The problem was that you had to do this to get in and to get out. However, the toilet was on the other side of that door. Out of frustration the workers would jam the door with a broom

Hi Everyone,I thought I would first of explain what inspired me to write this on a nice September morning. It was a dumb decision. I have made many dumb decisions in my life and sometimes, just for fun I repeat them. In this case it was agreeing to a dentist appointment at 7 am on a Friday morning. This all came about around the time of VeeamON. Some of you noticed there were times at VeeamON in Miami when I was walking around with a not so jolly expression on my face. The reason for this was because I was stuck in between benefits providers (read dental insurance) and precisely at that time one of my remaining wisdom teeth decided to cause Armageddon. I held out as best I could. Hi Everyone, I generally wake up in a good mood on Friday. Full of energy and ready to end the week and transfer myself in to relaxation mode. During these “feel good” moments I often find myself wondering about the “bigger” questions of life.This morning first thing I watched the weekly Veeam recap with @Madi.Cristil @MicoolPaul and @coolsport00 (notice both of the latter have “cool” in their usernames.. coincidence? I think not 😀). That got me thinking about the Veeam community and IT communities in general. I remembered what life was like before joining all of these great groups and came to the realisation that my IT communities, and especially the Veeam community, have become a very important part of my life. This has gone beyond the simple need for a technical source of information. IT community has added an enormous positive ingredient into my world.
