A huge ransomware attack on the Library system of North America’s 4th largest city 😓. It happened a few weeks ago but was devastating. Hi Everyone,All IT folks are secret hoarders. Come on admit it. I bet if we look in your basement we will find a ton of old computer equipment that is being kept “just in case”. I won’t even start about the cable jungle that grows down there. The older you get the more serious you become at your IT collection efforts. I recently scored an old Dell Chromebook that had been generously broken (i.e. put in developer mode in order to remove the dead ChromeOS and install Linux) by some developer (can’t remember if that is allowed or not so if need be I can provide the person’s address to the appropriate authorities while I play the victim.In fact this is allowed as they force you to press control L every time you want to boot in wild mode otherwise it goes and wipes the disk. However, I digress. Lets see what this power monster can do. I will pull out a terminal and inspect. Just to add the Linux Mate Desktop is installed which is quite lightweight and does not appear to be hogging resources

Security so tight, you need to break the rules to be able to work?

HI Everyone,This post was inspired by our conversation on the KubeKorner about my (in the past 😁) using notepad and vim to great text files with info, how to’s, solutions to issues. I reminded me of all the times that I have seen people do the same for passwords that are tightly stored away in password managers or other locations that require “extra effort” to gain access too. This made me think back to my career and the many incidents where I saw shortcuts taken in order to be able to work more effectively because of strict security measures.The most hilarious thing that I ever saw was at one job where the security team were on steroid. There was a door to a confidential location that would automatically close and lock after you typed in your very long and annoying individual code on the small panel. The problem was that you had to do this to get in and to get out. However, the toilet was on the other side of that door. Out of frustration the workers would jam the door with a broom

Hi Everyone,I thought I would first of explain what inspired me to write this on a nice September morning. It was a dumb decision. I have made many dumb decisions in my life and sometimes, just for fun I repeat them. In this case it was agreeing to a dentist appointment at 7 am on a Friday morning. This all came about around the time of VeeamON. Some of you noticed there were times at VeeamON in Miami when I was walking around with a not so jolly expression on my face. The reason for this was because I was stuck in between benefits providers (read dental insurance) and precisely at that time one of my remaining wisdom teeth decided to cause Armageddon. I held out as best I could. I tried keeping Listerine in my mouth for long periods at a time, then going to the beach and holding salt water in my mouth as I read it has healing powers (although this caused some fellow beach dwellers to give me strange looks). Hi Everyone, I generally wake up in a good mood on Friday. Full of energy and ready to end the week and transfer myself in to relaxation mode. During these “feel good” moments I often find myself wondering about the “bigger” questions of life.This morning first thing I watched the weekly Veeam recap with @Madi.Cristil @MicoolPaul and @coolsport00 (notice both of the latter have “cool” in their usernames.. coincidence? I think not 😀). That got me thinking about the Veeam community and IT communities in general. I remembered what life was like before joining all of these great groups and came to the realisation that my IT communities, and especially the Veeam community, have become a very important part of my life. This has gone beyond the simple need for a technical source of information. IT community has added an enormous positive ingredient into my world. Friday Musings before a long weekend. What does IT community mean for you?

Hi Everyone. I don’t normally do anything in the cloud group. Not for lack of interest but because there is so little time and so much in IT to keep up with. However, when I come across something that I think might be of interest I will of course try to share. Forgive me if this has already been posted here, at first glance I did not see anything. There was an announcement on the Kodekloud slack today which read something to the effect of “run AWS on your laptop”. As you all know I am Uber addicted to anything that can run on the laptop (most likely due to psychological trauma from early IT career when the meany admins would not let me into the precious server room or consoles) 🤣.As I understand it localstack will allow you to emulate AWS and play around with AWS api locally on your computer. The potential for being ably to cheaply prepare for an exam or prepare offline seems great here. Again, since I am not an AWS expert I don’t know how well this really works but I thought it worth

Hi Everyone, I don’t remember if this has come up here before but every once in a while when deleting namespaces your deletion just hangs in a terminating state:Where is the TerminatorYes I am removing Kasten but only because this is a test lab for other purposes. Never delete Kasten in production if you want data protection 😉So what is up? I had installed via helm so this would normally not happen but I think I was tinkering and there may have been so objects left over. We can check that by running this command:kubectl api-resources --verbs=list --namespaced -o name | xargs -n 1 kubectl get -n kasten-ioNothing foundNo objects are present which is good since we don’t want to junk lying around in the cluster.The problem when this happens is that a finalizer is present for whatever reason so you need to manually remove it. Hey folks,It seems like just yesterday that HashiCorp announced changes to the Terraform licensing plan and already there is a possible alternative on the horizon. The Linux Foundation announced today the formation of the OpenTofu project which is being billed as an alternative to Terraform. Hello Everyone,So I have to admit it. I am guilty, convicted of being a text file maniac! I was one of the people who would feverishly create tons of text files notes on my desktop.Solve an issue! “oh yes I need to write this down.. hey I will create a text file”Then I graduated to the documents folder, and then different folders per context: Kasten_install, PCA_exam_prep, how_I_finally_got_ingress_to_work.. and so on and so on. Obviously at work I would use the company CRM system but at home… there were not rules and the Universe was one of chaos and endless questions “I knew I wrote the solution to this down somewhere????” ENTER WIKIJS!! https://js.wiki/ Wikijs is an opensource “host it yourself wiki system”. Hi Everyone,If you are leveraging Generic Storage Backups then keep in mind after the release of version 6.5.0 this functionality will be disabled by default. In order to enable it you will need to contact Kasten support. There are a number of reasons for this move.First of all CSI storage drivers have now become common place and snapshot backups has always been the preferred method for backup. Second GSB was really a temporary solution which provided no data integrity and could result in corruption. After all the side car container was simply copying a live file system.So it was better than having no backup at all but not an optimal solution for true data protection. Replication Job, Storage vMotion source vms?

Hey Everyone, As I understand it Veeam is fully vMotion aware. That includes storage vMotion. So if someone storage vMotions a VM the replication job should not have any issues? However, if someone moves the replica to a different datastore, based on @MicoolPaul best answer then you would need to remove from the configuration database and seed and map in the replication jobs to the replicas on the new location.
