Openshift connect to Nodes

Hi Folks,I am slowly progressing with my Openshift course and one thing that I find supremely cool is the system they have for connecting to nodes in the cluster. @BertrandFR probably knows this since he works with Openshift :) So instead of using ssh. you can simply run oc debug nodes/nodenameand openshift will run a privileged pod on that node which has access to the host file system, then creates a host directory in the root of the container in the pod, so you not only can inspect logs etc but chroot and run programs i.e. chroot /hostcrictl psto see containers running on that node!Of course the kubelet has to be running on the node so if you are having problems with that.. tough bananas.. back to ssh :)Simple and highly effective.. no need for ssh!!

Out of space on Immutable repo? chattr?

Hi Folks, I have someone who ran out of space on their Linux immutable repo, they are asking to remove immutability on the fs (chatter -i) as root. I am wondering what Veeam DB will think? and what other issues might arise. They seem to say they have done it before then just rescanned the repo?

Folks, Please don’t post brain dumps. You are not only cheating the system but also yourselves. I have had to deal with paper cert folks and believe me they don’t last long. The exam and the piece of paper are not the point. It is the process and the knowledge that is what you want. At 1 am when sitting there clueless on a severity 1 call your brain dumps will be of no use. cheers

Kasten Immutability, 1 2 3 its easy with Wasabi

It is fast and easy to setup S3 Immutability when leveraging Wasabi and Kasten.First login to your Wasabi account. Create a user for the API and an Access key:  Next Create a new bucket making sure to turn on Object Lock      Now create a new Location profile in Kasten You will need to validate the bucket in Kasten:    Next create a backup and point it at the Wasabi location profile: Just like that we have a successful immutable backup:

Working with Disaster Recovery, Stress and Burnout, How do you deal with it?

Hi Folks, While not a technical subject, nevertheless since we are working with Veeam and that implies Disaster Recovery I am pretty certain many of you have been in the high pressure trenches of Severity One situations.Unless you have nerves of steel inevitably this will start to take a toll on your health and well being. People here are veterans of this profession so you have obviously found ways to survive and handle this. I thought it would be good to share what we all do to keep our sanity. Mind you I have been told I was never sane to begin with so you can’t lose what you don’t have but . For me humor is the saving grace.Laughing is like a reset button and it wipes the slate clean of all the built up pressure and anxieties and not just with IT related issues. In every situation I try to find a funny side of things. For example two weeks ago when I went to have my eyes checked again. I knew that they were going to tell me that I needed new glasses. WEBSITE DEFACED THEN SAVED BY VEEAM KASTEN!!!

This is a small-scale amateur emulation of a hacker’s website defacing followed by a Kasten restore.I have created a small static website with Nginx deployed in Kubernetes. The Geoff Burke Propaganda website is designed to boast a positive image of the individual, hard working and healthy living and to inspire Management to make the right decision at salary review time.A group of malicious hackers gained access to the website and replaced the content with completely false information and quite obviously fake photos. Systemd on WSL then run Microk8s

Hi Everyone as promised a short post about the new systemd on WSL.As usual when it comes to Microsoft this will only work on the latest, i.e. Windows 11. One of my beefs with MS has always been that they push and nudge you forward even if there is no practical reason to do so. Just my two cents of course.I ended up having to do this on a VM but even that is not without its issues as during the install you have to go into the registry to be able to install Windows 11 in order to disable TPM. There are some instructions on how to do this here: https://michlstechblog.info/blog/windows-11-on-vsphere-bypass-tpm-2-0-check/I found this great blog that helped me get past the issues with updating your WSL and getting stystemd working: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/systemd-support-is-now-available-in-wsl/Maybe there is a better way to do this but it worked for my test setup.As always you will want to do all of the windows updates.Next you need to check what version of WSL you are ru

Let's Hook up our Kasten to VBR!

Today we are going to perform an export of our Pod Storage to a VBR server from Kasten. I have a Tanzu Community Edition cluster setup on vSphere. I have setup the vsphere-csi-driver. That setup will be described in another post. For now I am leveraging one Tanzu Management Cluster 4 nodes, 1 controlplane and 3 worker nodes:   TCE has a lot of namespaces but I have Kasten installed in the Kasten.io namespace and a small Nginx pod in the nginx namespace:It is very important to be leveraging the csi-vsphere driver in order to export to a Veeam VBR server, this can be seen here by the provisioner: I decided to expose my services with Metallb since I have no experience with NSX-ALB, that might come one day: Kasten is installed and we can see all the various namespaces in the dashboard: I have created a backup policy:  One Important thing to keep in mind is that you can only export the snapshot data to Veeam for now. O365 and Cloud

Just want to run this by all the Service Provider Gurus here. It seems that for Multi-tenant O365 Veeam no longer wants you to place the console on the Cloud Connect server. Instead you install it separately and have it connected to the VSPC and expose a portal for restores. The old method of having the CC tenants go through the SP in the local VBR server is not seen as the optimal option. This diagram from the BP would suggest this:  Does that sound correct? I have been away from O365 for a bit now and the world is changing.

Netbox on docker Wow!

Hi Folks, I don’t know if any of you are familiar with Netbox but it is a fantastic piece of software that does so many things it is hard to describe. Check out their site https://docs.netbox.dev/en/stable/ I have used Netbox at a few workplaces but never seen it on docker until now. The speed and the performance is incredible from what I had previously remembered and the upgrades and lifecycle management so much simpler. I did see one effort to get it on Kubernetes and since their is an image could do a home grown :) but for now I will simply enjoy. Replication Job, Storage vMotion source vms?

Hey Everyone, As I understand it Veeam is fully vMotion aware. That includes storage vMotion. So if someone storage vMotions a VM the replication job should not have any issues? However, if someone moves the replica to a different datastore, based on @MicoolPaul best answer then you would need to remove from the configuration database and seed and  map in the replication jobs to the replicas on the new location.

Solutions for Quarterly Backups to Cloud GFS?

Hi Folks, I have been out of the Cloud Connect loop for a bit. As I understand it you can no longer do Quarterly GFS backups on backup copy jobs to CC. Has anyone thought of some original ideas to get around this? If you have a customer that wants to send GFS to AWS Quarterly, I was thinking for them to simply add a direct AWS s3 repo to  V12 and if their bandwidth allows use the windows scheduler to run active fulls every quarter. Anyone else had this issue?

Engineer Entitlement? Stop being at twit :)

Most of you are following the twitter saga. Politics and other issues aside I wanted to address one leitmotif brought forward by Musk and his horde of sycophants. Numerous times I have seen the argument “time to fight IT entitlement” used as a battle cry before performing massive layoffs. I have worked in IT for 20 years and while I have encountered some bad apples, on the whole the majority of Engineers and IT tech folk have been hard working and diligent people. I was working abroad from North America for 16 years and I was shocked when I returned to see the level of C Level, CEO etc entitlement. The salaries of this class of worker (and remember we are all a team as they love to say in the meetings!) had in my opinion unjustifiably skyrocketed to levels their predecessors could not have dreamed of. Inevitably to justify such a situation one must find a scapegoat and the hard working IT tech folks are an easy target.Or are they?My buddy and fellow Vanguard @mkevenaar started his own

Veeam Management Agent on VBR server

Hi Folks, I am back into the wild and wonderful world of Veeam Service Provider Console after a brief sojourn. I wanted to see if there is a quick answer to this and if my old solution perhaps has a better one now.I have a VBR that is connected to the Service Provider and all backup copy jobs are working fine. In VSPC the company is smiling with a happy green Healthy! However, at the VBR level the when pressing the Management Agent icon it complains that is connecting, and can’t connect after rolling through all the gateways. I tried running through the SP properties again but no luck. Is it time to un-install the pesky agent and redeploy? The ClientAgent_error, Communication and ClientAgent logs have things like CloudGate “No such host is known” and “Endpoint Hanshake Failed” and The write operation failed, see inner exception. ---> System.TimeoutException: Could not finish read operation in timely manner.Now could this be that if they have running backups and have used up the Tena

Hi Folks, I have been doing the KodeKloud Engineer off and on for a while now. It is an excellent free resource. You sign up for this make believe company and you get assigned various Devops tasks. The assignments are at times hard and the further you progress (you get promoted after reaching a certain level of points) the harder the tasks are. Linux and Windows, happily ever after, who would have thought

I am old enough to remember the intense wars between Windows and Linux users in the late 90’s.I actually had a dream that I woke up many many years in the future, circa 2100 where both OS’s had merged and life was wonderful. Well it is 2023, the world is still crazy BUT… today I got Terminator and Remmina running on Windows 11 via WSL2, and what's more with a shortcut!!! I am back on a windows laptop due to corporate stuff. I don’t miss the MAC to be honest, It felt like it was a half Windows half Linux (or BSD) Frankenstein but hey that is just personal taste so to each their own.How far has the world come though!!Terminator is my favorite terminal program and Remmina for RDP well, I just like it (don’t save your passwords in there though). In your Ubuntu shell type sudo apt install terminator -ysudo apt install remmina -yFirst see if it can run (some complaints about the config but I will figure those out later) Terminator is backand now for Remmina:RemminaSome verbose anger there ba

MUTEX!!!

Hi folks,Can someone explain to me “the programming dummy” this word mutex? Is it just a log shock and awe term, i.e. someone like Geoff sees something “mutex” in the logs and thinks back to Grade 10 Math and makes a quick retreat? 😁Recently I have seen this word in different logs and wanted to double check with the pros before I press the terrifying search button on google. (I say that because I had a red mark on my face and thought I should google, it basically told me all the horrible things that it could be, until the unsponsored answer way at the bottom had a nothing to worry about explanation)!!
