Veeam Certified Architect (VMCA) 2022 - course and exam experience

I finished my VMCA journey this week and passed the exam 😎🎉🎉🎉.So, I would like to write down some of my experiences and difficulties on this trip for others. 1. What is the VMCA? The Veeam certified Architect (VMCA) is the second and highest Veeam certification after the Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE).The VMCA is all about developing a backup solution and understanding the "Veeam Architecture Methodology", whereas the VMCE is more concentrated on technical aspects. 2. Specific VM Slow to Begin Boot After Restore

Greetings. I have an on-prem Windows Server 2019 Datacenter with the Hyper-V Role enabled running about 10 VMs. I was applying an update to one of the VMs, a Windows Server 2016 running Exchange 2016. The update, CU23, failed, forcing me to restore the machine. Prior to the attempted update I had VeeamZipped it from the B&R 11A CE panel, and so I launched the restore from there. After restoration I had quite a bit of troubleshooting to do to get mail flow back but I was completely successful.The remaining issue is this: Upon VM startup, there is a long pause, 3 full minutes, during which I see the expected black screen with “Hyper-V” logo smack in the middle, but it sits there doing absolutely nothing I can see. No circle of dots, just the Hyper-V text. After 3 minutes the circling dots begin and I have desktop in about 30 seconds. and everything runs normally. The disk layout is the usual Recovery, EFI and OS partitions.Has anyone run into anything similar? Thanks for any thought

Tape drive cleaning alert message

TapeDrive alert: The tape drive is due for routine cleaning: Wait for the current operation to finish. Then use a cleaning cartridge. Check the tape drive user manual for device specific cleaning instructions. We have the cleaning tape in the library, and it is set to Perform drive cleaning automatically. Not sure why we would get the alert. Would ejecting and adding back to the drive resolve this issue?

Feature request: getting rid of admin credentials for application-aware processing?

This was also asked at the AMA session during the Veeam 100 summit: I’d like to have application aware processing on Windows boxes by pre-installing some special Veeam software, but without having to specify an administrator-level account during job configuration.@HannesKback then replied that on V11 AAP did that trick just fine, but further testing showed that it was not possible. At least not without providing an account with administrative access corresponding to the VM.@Mildur at the time provided me with an alternative: instead of backing up via the ESXi API, install a standalone agent on the VM boxes, that would allow backing up without having to configure an admin account to the box. Have not tested it yet, should work just fine though!In any case, it’s day one of the VMCE course (thanks Veeam :) ) and during discussion of the AAP-related options AlexH was pondering about exactly the same issue.In any case, I’d like to re-iterate my request to Veeam for providing a way to have a

VBR outside domain - possible issues

For well know reasons myself and many here recommend to - if possible - deploy VBR and especially it’s repos outside of the Windows domain.Certain issues come as a downside with doing that:Maintaining multiple local admin logins, remote-UAC (LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy), firewall behavior outside of domain networks etc. being some of those.Recently I stumbled upon a situation were we could not establish a connection from a non-domain-joined VBR server to a newly deployed non-domain-joined Windows 2019 repo server. Other older proxies/repos to the same VBR were available and functioning.From the VBR server the admin$ share of the to-be-connected new repo was not accessible (“invalid login”).VBR also stated “invalid login” during Windows server onboarding. But from another (domain joined) Windows system in the same (direct, non-routed) network, the repo’s admin$ share was well available with the same user/pw.Of course no Windows firewall whatsoever was active.Very strange.Has anyone se

workingDir parameter will be removed when VM restore, that specify the root directory of the datastore

Even though the datastore exists and can be referenced at destination ESXi host, the workingDir parameter was removed during restore with the following message.2022/12/02 11:48:46 Removing workingDir parameter because it points to a non-existent datastore /vmfs/volumes/63652fbd-aed4fef5-8da8-48210b3d7365After checking with support(Case # 05738353), we were told that the Veeam specification is that if the root directory of the datastore is specified, it is removed even if it exists.Please note that there may be few cases where the root directory is specified.

In case you needed more reasoning as to why you need to backup your cloud workloads - RackSpace Hosted Exchange "Outage"

I’ve you’ve been following along, Friday Rackspace experienced a major disruption for their Hosted Exchange environment. Why exactly you’d still be using hosted exchange vs moving over to M365 I’m not sure, especially after Exchange has become such a major target for zero-day and ransomware attacks, but there were a lot of folks that still were and they’re hating life about now. Rumor’s I’ve heard indicate that their Exchange servers were not fully patched and malware has taken down the environment. Rackspace as indicated that the outage was caused by a “security incident”.To give a bit if idea just how bad it is, Rackspace is paying for it’s clients to utilize complimentary M365 Exchange Plan 1 licenses to get email up and flowing again, with the intention of moving back after this has been resolved, but I’m guessing most folks will not be moving back - I wouldn’t anyway. Backup job not running anymore

Hello everyone, I have run into an issue that I can’t seem to figure out. I have my system set up to backup on a daily basis but a backup has not run in the last 12 days. The only change made 12 days ago was a reinstall of Slack on my laptop. I have rebooted my system multiple times since that date along with performing an uninstall and reinstall of the agent. I am including a screenshot of the Windows agent and my system uptime below.I am not sure why there would be a job still running at this point and could really use some help. I am using Veeam B&R 11.5 CE and my laptop is running Windows 11 22H2. I know that my version of Windows technically is not supported until B&R 12 with Windows agent version 6 but they have not been released yet. I do know that the only thing that will not work with my version of Windows is the backup recovery media creation. Veeam B&R Suddenly loses connection to NFS repository

I’m a user of Veeam B&R Community Build 11.0.1.1261, and I’ve just started experiencing a problem a second time that I thought was fixed.Some time ago (a couple of weeks to a month), I started experiencing an issue with Veeam backups. When it would try backing up, it would quickly error out with the following error:Warning Failed to synchronize [Backup Repository] Details: Failed to call RPC function 'NfsIsExist': Failed to reset previous connection exception: Permission denied. The first time that happened, I assumed it was because I was disabling Veeam services that I thought were unnecessary. Despite re-enabling them, the error persisted. I eventually realized my installation of B&R was out of date, so I installed an updated version and that seemed to fix the issue for the time being.Fast forward to today, and I’m seeing the aforementioned error again when trying to run backups. The repository is a Synology DiskStation, and I can verify that the share is accessible from a

P2V Physical Dell Server

We are new with using Veeam P2V. We’ve successfully P2V’d a couple of servers without a issue.We have been asked to P2V a Dell server running windows 2012R2. Has 1 Hard drive that is 1TB.We deployed the Veeam agent and backed it up OK. We migrated into production (with NIC not connected and powered off). Once it was completed, we removed the nic from it in VCenter and added the VMXNET3 adapter and the correct assigned the Vlan back to it. We powered it on (w/NIC not Connected) and the server comes up and displays “Getting Devices Ready” and it just sits there with circle spinning.Anyone seen this before and have any suggestions of what the issue could be?

Service Providers, are you placing any devices on premise?

Hey all, my company is using Veeam mostly for our medium-sized clients, but some of our smaller clients with only a few VM’s generally are using something else. A couple with old Datto Siris or Alto appliances, quite a few with Barracuda backup appliances, and even an Intronis client. Most of these clients are paying for more of a BaaS service on a monthly or yearly agreement, though I think a couple actually own their the Barracuda appliance that we sold them in the past.With that said, we’re pretty invested with Datto despite the Kaseya attachment, and they caught the ear of my boss about leasing out Datto Siris 4 appliances to replace all of those non-Veeam clients. That said, I’d rather move them over the the Service Provider side of things and get everything moved into the Veeam house.Here’s what I was thinking. We historically don’t like hosting customer data, and so somewhat in parallel with my developing a VB365 solution for our clients (as most are using Barracuda Cloud-to

Restore configuration backup - ACCESS DENIED

I have a “Community Edition” of VB&R. I’m trying to restore a configuration backup to it. When I go to Configuration Backup and click the “Restore...” button, I get “Access Denied”. I’m an admin on the computer and I’ve even launched VB&R with “Run as administrator”. I’m not sure why the program is denying access. Is this a limitation of the “Community Edition” (I’ve haven’t found any documenation that mentions this)? The whole process breaks down before I even get the choice to choose a restore file so I’m trying to determine what is actually happening at this step and if I simply need to change permissions somewhere. Thanks!

Thank you, Veeam, for being Veeam and being amazing

I just want to say how grateful I am for the Veeam culture and the way they operate as a company and their extensive involvement in the Veeam community. I have extensively also used a competing product and I feel largely ignored by them and I have deep seeded impression that the company’s engineers couldn’t care less about the customers’ ideas and concerns and believe they know better than the customer and just choose to ignore 99% of what is suggested to them, meanwhile they seem to have the development acumen and abilities of first year college students. Meanwhile, a company like Veeam, that is a giant and a powerhouse, goes out of its way to not only make an amazing product, but also is incredibly involved with their client community, includes them in the decision making process through the Veeam Legends and Vanguard programs, and goes out of their way to make sure their customers know they are heard and cared about. I have so much respect for @Gostev @Rick Vanover and the entire V

Exchange online not receiving activation code from veeam.com

Hello all, I have a problem when i try to restore password or create a new account to veeam.com, i am not receiving email in O365.When i test this with gmail account it works fine. I have checked this with more than one O365 organizations. From the O365 admin center side it seems like the message has never been received.thanks in advance.

Veeam SQL restore issue to Hyper-V guest

I’m using VBR Enterprise and I’ve an issue with a SQL Server database restore to a Hyper-V VM. I am currently backing up the VM using guest application processing which is working fine. It uses PowerShell Direct because the SQL VM is on a private VLAN, which cannot be accessed from the VBR server which is hosted in a different data centre. It can however access the hypervisors and all backups have been successful. Frustratingly, I’m unable to restore using the same methodology in reverse. Surely if I can backup successfully using PSDirect, I should be able to restore using the same method? I asked Veeam Support and they sent me here. 😐When I try a restore, I get an error saying VBR cannot access SQL… I can confirm that Named Pipes is enabled. Has anyone else ever run into this issue and found a fix? I really don’t think it’s acceptable that I’ve to ask for help on a community forum regarding an enterprise product that should work out-of-the-box, but here I am!
