Monitoring Veeam Backup Server with Checkmk

Frequently I'm ask in how to monitor backup jobs of Veeam externally Veeam servers. I know that we can do this easy with Veeam One. But here I’m going to show you a solution to monitor backup jobs having only a Veeam Backup Server (without VEM or VONE). So, the application I’m talking about is Checkmk. Checkmk is a monitoring software usually used on NOC (Network Operations Center) environments. However, this is an easy tool to deploy and very light to hav in our backup environment. Versions Checkmk has a free and commercial version: Checkmk Raw Edition (CRE) – Free and 100% Open Source. It even incorporates Nagios into its core. You can use it to monitor entire environments. Support for this release is available through the Checkmk community forum. Checkmk Enterprise Free Edition (CFE) – version already based on the standard edition, with Checkmk Micro Core (CMC), which means that it is no longer based on Nagios and is aimed at small IT environments with a single site and up to 25 mon

Service Providers, are you placing any devices on premise?

Hey all, my company is using Veeam mostly for our medium-sized clients, but some of our smaller clients with only a few VM’s generally are using something else. A couple with old Datto Siris or Alto appliances, quite a few with Barracuda backup appliances, and even an Intronis client. Most of these clients are paying for more of a BaaS service on a monthly or yearly agreement, though I think a couple actually own their the Barracuda appliance that we sold them in the past. With that said, we’re pretty invested with Datto despite the Kaseya attachment, and they caught the ear of my boss about leasing out Datto Siris 4 appliances to replace all of those non-Veeam clients. That said, I’d rather move them over the the Service Provider side of things and get everything moved into the Veeam house. Here’s what I was thinking. We historically don’t like hosting customer data, and so somewhat in parallel with my developing a VB365 solution for our clients (as most are using Barracuda Cloud-to-C

Veeam Backup for AWS - Can't select a repository for Configuration Backups

I’ve created a repository per the instructions from the documentation, but cannot select it for scheduled Configuration Backups. It’s displayed in the Repository list. Encryption, and immutability is enabled. Is there something else missing?

PKi Cert has expired on Vcenter Server and Veeam can't connect to backup VMs.

Hi, Our PKI cert has expired on our VCS server, and as a result the backups of the VMs are failing as Veeam can’t connect to the VCS. Its going to take us a few days to get another cert generated and installed on the VCS - but is there any workaround we can do in the meantime to get the Veeam Backup and Replication software to backup our VMs? I’m assuming not really - as that’s the point of certificates! Any suggestions most welcome. Thanks...

File explorer: Access is denied

In B&R console I want to browse the contents of a Linux repository. I go to Files and expand the repository but a message appears “Access is denied.” The backup and replication jobs which are assigned to the repo work fine and I can rescan the repo so I know the stored credentials are working but I can’t browse the files. Is it a limitation of the Community edition?

There are two cores in the network.It is necessary to implement veeam availability in case of failure of one of them.The Windows cluster is not suitable. Because you cannot implement fault-tolerant shared storage.Option 1Two veeam servers, one is on, the other is off. I wrote a C# tool so you can move VBO (365) config to a new host, or rename the host

The main issue is the config.edb file has 3-4 values that are hard-coded with the VBO proxy settings, so if you move to a new server, VBO backups will start to fail. Thus, the official recommendation is to move the data, but manually re-create all orgs and backup jobs. That HURTS. Same goes with the "failed to retrieve licenses for X users" error if you rename the server, or change domain. This is tested in production over the last few weeks, fully open source, Veeam support know about it and were glad it resolved a bug for us (upgrading from V5 to V7 triggered an issue to do with the hostname). VBO repo migration

Can anyone point me in the direction of a best practices/recommended process for doing maintenance on VBO repos, for example doing hardware maintenance on the VBO repo server, and want to move the data to another storage location, either temporarily or permanent migration? Seem to be running into a lot of Jetdb errors, after we tried to figure out the best process

Upcoming Linux Kernel Patch to introduce "6% performance improvement" to storage performance

Happy Friday everyone! I hope that you’ve all had a good week 🙂 I’m back with an interesting news story to share, and it provides an example of how overengineering can impact the deliverables you’re trying to achieve. So, a gentleman called Jens Axboe has published an interesting patch update (link here) that claimed with their test case a performance increase from 108M IOPS to 115M IOPS, and they said they haven’t even enabled most of the costly block layer items that means the performance improvement could be even higher in real world utilisations. Now, such a claim could be met with scepticism, but I was intrigued, how is this working? Thankfully Jens provided some insights into this, and this is where I believe a lesson can be learned in overdesigning a solution to a problem, to its own detriment. Veeam & Veeam Supported Products Reaching End of Life in 2024

It’s that time of year again where we need to plan for the year ahead and be sure that any upcoming end-of-life or end-of-support dates from our dependent software vendors are addressed. Why does this matter when I’m just trying to protect the data? Times change, and software changes with them, until it’s no longer supported. At any point, a patch to an operating system, a .NET framework update, or anything else really, could end up with the software no longer being backed up properly, or not working at all in production. Without valid support there’s no process to get a fix, and whilst your backup software may still be in support with Veeam, if the vendor won’t fix the problem, it’s time to start panicking. With this in mind, let’s explore the software & operating systems being declared end of life in 2024 so we can start planning our upgrades/migrations if necessary. Does Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 require a Microsoft organization ID?

I’m trying to set up Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 on my regular BDR server and Veeam Backup system. The configuration seems to insist that I provide some Microsoft “organization” info. Am I misunderstanding this? For starters, this is a Community setup, and I normally use a Microsoft 365 Family subscription. That has no Organization ID or organization domain name. And it does not use, or give any access to, Azure AAD/Entra. Yet no one at Veeam seems to think that’s a problem…? Not sure they get it. Just as it happens, I do have a Microsoft Organization account, but it’s totally, completely separate from the Microsoft 365 Family subscription. I definitely have a lot of OneDrive data stored there that I want to back up, as well as Exchange data. If I use the Organization in the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, will I still be able to backup the Family subscription with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365? And I am running a local Active Directory service, but it has nothing to do with anythi

Quick Tip: Regain access to PostgreSQL after changing hostname

After changing the hostname of your VBR server, you might have issues accessing the integrated PostgreSQL database. For example when creating a new database or restoring configuration, you see the following error: “SSPI authentication failed for User XYZ” While the database connection itself uses “localhost”, the pg_ident.conf references the hostname itself for administrative access. So after changing the hostname, you need to replace the old hostname with the new one inside the pg_ident.conf file. Also you can add additional or different users to access the PostgreSQL instance. The default path to this files is “C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\15\data\”. There’s a KB article from Veeam which mentions this error.
