Hello community,

I would like to share a scenario of switching from Reverse Incremental mode to Forever Forward incremental mode, when changing a repository for Veeam backups.

Whenever I am seeing Reverse incremental mode configured, it generally means, that a daily offload of full backups to tapes is needed. However, when using immutability on disk storage, Reverse mode is, generally, not supported. It is not supported on VHR and the option to enable when targeting an Object Storage repository is completely missing. Which will also become the standard in v13.

Jobs do not need to be recreated, they will switch automatically to incremental mode. If offloading daily full backups to tape is still a requirement, then another way to achieve it is to use Forever Incremental Mode, meaning without enabling periodic full backups and without configuring GFS points.

Then to use regular Tape Media Pool(not GFS, with GFS we can only do weekly/monthly/yearly full restore points) and to enable Virtual full for the needed days:

The creation of virtual full backups does not require additional space on the repository, Veeam will use pointer to create this full backup on tape. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/virtual_full_backup.html?ver=120

That is correct @kira.bezhanova ! This topic came up on a post I was helping with several mos ago if I recall. Great reminder. Will keep this post in mind for those looking to do the same thing. And, for those who don’t know...Reverse Incremental is going away in v13...so be prepared! 😊

Looking forward to reverse incremental going away that is for sure.  It will help us better transition customers over and hopefully it is forced to be honest.  😋
