Veeam RMAN Plugin – Update of Backup Meta Data

With version 10 and 11 of the Veeam plugin for Oracle RMAN was a new backup metadata format introduced.But what is the benefit of the new metadata format?In the older versions all metadata was written to one file – the “Veaam backup chain metadata file” (Extension of this file is .vbm).This file gets rather big over time and it takes some time to read and write the metadata for a single backup session from or to this file. Because of this the amount of time needed for a plugin backup session gets longer and longer.The new metadata format writes the metadata of a backup session in an own file (Extension of these files is .vasm). Now you have many small metadata files. If a backup file expires, the metadata has not to be searched in the big file and deleted from it. Now the metadata file can simply be deleted with the backup file. This is much faster than the former procedure. Additionally a new small file is written for the backup chain with some general metadata information (Extension

[Quicktip] "Error in the application" during VM backup

Yesterday I saw the error a second time, so I thought it would be helpful to others to share.Error happens when VBR tries to read vSphere information for the VM to back up. Error says "Error in the application" like you see in the screenshot.After some troubleshooting we found the reason for this. It was because TCP-port 902 was not allowed (in all firewalls) from the Veeam proxy server to the ESXi host that was hosting the VM to back up. After the port was enabled in the firewall(s), backup ran without further issues. Notes:Used ports for VBR see here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/used_ports.html?ver=110 Vanguard @Cragdoo also shared this error some time ago. In his case the error was caused by a name-resolution problem on a new Linux Veeam proxy server.I hope this post safe others some time when this error appears.

It starts with taking a backup of an EC2 instance with VBAWS, using a VBR server to backup copy job to a SOBR with Wasabi and finally using that Wasabi bucket to Natively restore to Azure. This one had a lot of moving parts so it went a little over the 10-15 minute structure but it’s worth a watch!

Veeam Backup for Cloud: Extending Recovery Functionality

The Veeam Backup for AWS, Azure, and GCP products supplies an effortless way to protect workloads running in one of the hyperscale public clouds. Workload protection is done by taking native snapshots and copying snapshots to object storage for a defined period. A full instance recovery and file-level recoveries can be performed from the backup. But this only scratches the surface of what Veeam can do with a cloud-based backup. To use advanced storage functions like Instant VM recovery directly to an on-premises hypervisor, full instance recovery into another hyperscale cloud, or copying backup files to an on-premises harden repository will require Veeam Backup and Replication to be integrated with Veeam Backup for AWS, Azure, and GCP through what’s called an “external repository”. Some weeks ago the backup monitoring team of my company had an issue with the backups of one of our customers…Where it started and where did it end...If you want to know, keep on reading The infrastructure of the customer : The customer was having a Hyper-V infrastructure with a couple of Hyper-V hosts and +/- 30 VMs running on shared storage (several CSV volumes) divided on those hostsThe customer is using backup-jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication and is using replication-jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication The backup issue : The backups were running fine, except for 1 VM.I don’t know anymore the exact error in Veeam…The engineers tried several things trying to resolve this issue, but nothing helped.At least they contacted me if I had an idea for this issue.I quickly noted the error and mentioned that the cause of this error is not related to the backup, but that there is a Hyper-V issue for this particular VM.I suggested two things : try at first a live migration of that part

It's been almost a month since the release of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v6. There's only a known issue, that the CPU load in idle is higher then usual; no big issue, but if you want to solve that, there's a hotfix available: https://www.veeam.com/kb4294 One change, which didn’t get much attention so far, is the newly designed setup: I really like the new fresh look, compared to the old setup. Disaster Recovery (DR) Plan - Top Items to Consider When Creating Your Own

Recently, I had to create a Disaster Recovery (DR) Plan for my organization. It’s actually quite surprising none had ever been created. Part of that is on me since I’ve been here long enough to have done so, and am responsible for most of the systems we would need to recover in the event of a disaster. But let’s be honest, creating DR Plans isn’t one of those “exotic” tasks a Systems Architect likes to do. Working with and playing with the tech we manage is what we get excited about! Regardless, it still *needs* to be done. One may ask why does creating a DR Plan need to be done? It may seem obvious to most, but some it may not. I thought I’d answer that question here, as well as provide a “skeleton” list of items to consider when building out your own DR Plan.First, having a DR Plan brings a sense of “calm” for the IT staff. In the event of a disaster of any sort - site outage; mal-intent via ransomware, disgruntled employee, or major hardware outage; etc - chaos can surely take over.

Automatically create vSphere roles to use with Veeam Backup & Replication V11

Good day everyone !In November 2020 I created a PowerCLI script which creates a vSphere role with cumulative permissions for Veeam Backup & Replication version 10.In the meantime VBR v11 was released and I needed to update that script and wanted to create “new awareness” of it. The fact that I see A LOT of Administrator@vsphere.local users being used with adding the vCenter to Veeam makes me nervous, that’s why I wanted to fight against this with a simple script so no one needs to manually go through the privileges. VBR: "Collecting disk files location data" takes too much time

The ProblemLast week we were troubleshooting a Veeam Backup & Replication environment, where jobs were slowing down since some time.Looking at the jobs, the backup performance itself was quite good, but the processing of some VMs took longer then expected.The task log of those VMs showed that "Collecting disk files location data" was the cause; for some VMs it lasted 20 minutes, others were waiting for several hours.I first suspected a vCenter problem, as the debug logs showed timeouts and an unsupported API, but after patching and some restarts the problems persisted.The ResolutionDoing some research I’ve stumbled over an R&D forums digest from @Gostev from the year 2018 (Veeam Community Forums digest at that time ). And this one brought us in the right direction as Anton mentioned disk fragmentation as a pausible cause for this issue.I’ve opened up a Veeam support case just to be sure, before approaching the storage team, but later on our customer discovered some left-over s

Analyse ReFS space savings with Block cloning

ReFS (Resilient File System) is a file system by Microsoft that provides - since Windows Server 2016 - a feature named Block cloning. Basically it uses pointers to already existing blocks instead of copying or re-creating them. This saves time and disk space. Veeam uses this feature for synthetic operations like merging incremental backups with full or synthetic full.In my opinion Microsoft does not offer a proper utility to analyse ReFS space savings with Block cloning.
