ONTAP 9.14.1 now supported with Veeam Data Platform 12.1.

Yes i use it in production at two customers with 9.12 als Veeam s3 repo. I know the limitation on metrocluster IP but i dont think thats a problem because normaly metrocluster isn’t the backup target NO 1. We don’t have experience at scale at the moment, but maybe in the near future because of the problems with Netapp Storage GRID and small objects we may plan to migrate a bigger workload to ontap s3…..   Regards Matze   yes i agree; metroclusters as backup target is nonsense.i would love to hear your experience on ONTAP S3 if you like to share; thanks.best regardsdaniel

hands down guys; did somebody use S3 on ONTAP before 9.14.1 in production? as backup target or not.we run a metrocluster FC and S3 was only supported on metrocluster IP with unmirrored aggregates (not useable for me). how are your experience with S3 on ONTAP at scale?@coolsport00 did you think nimble have a future after the “small” alletras released now?best regardsdaniel

Hallo @jensmartin Du kannst 31 Jobs und 31 Medienpools anlegen; aber das ist natürlich irgendwie quatsch. Alternativ einen Job und per Script/Powershell den Medienpool jeden Tag innerhalb des Jobs wechseln/umschreiben.Auch hilfreich ist das “auswerfen” des Tapes nach Jobabschluss.Vielleicht verstehe ich deine Anforderung auch nicht richtig aber was wäre denn das Thema einen Medienpool zu nutzen und die Retention auf 31 Tage zu setzen; dann musst Du einen “Zyklus” lang sicherstellen, dass die richtigen Tapes verwendet werden aber dann sollte selbst beim einlegen eines “falschen” Tapes kein überschreiben möglich sein.Solltest Du eine Library haben, kannst Du auch im Medienpool einstellen, dass KEIN Tape aus dem Freepool gezogen werden darf. Dann musst Du das “richtige” Tape immer in den zu nutzenden Pool verschieben (vermutlich auch wieder per Script/Powershll möglich).Wirklich automatisiert mit Standardfunktionen geht deine Anforderung aber leider nicht fürchte ich.Ich habe tatsächlich

what i also like to add is the migration path from rdm or physical san luns to a vmdk (also super easy).deploy the veeam agent do a backup “export” (restore) the disk in question in vmdk format to your vmware datastore add the disk to your VM and done.. of course if you solve the “cluster datastore” problem before.Daniel

VMware RDM Replication

From what I’m reading, Clustered Virtual Disks require Fiber Channel and cannot be used with ISCSI….which may be fine for most folks that are trying to cluster disks, but for me, that won’t work because none of my clients are using Fiber Channel.  Another link indicating that FC is required is here:  https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/79616   yes FC is one requirement if i remember correct or vsan will do the job. for me (as also the storage guy) FC is kind of a “nobrainer” sorry about that. not often worked with iscsi sans until now tbh.

@oktay since v12 and v12.1 you need the “new” port 9405 for certificate communication between vbr and em.. maybe you can check this also.Daniel

long term archive backups

Hey @stiggr check your backup job settings; storage, advanced, maintenance:   as mentioned above; you have some options. also backup copy jobs may work for you.We always create an “new” backupjob (full) for the case a system is decomissoned and do a tapeout with the needed retention This can also be done with a vtl or vtl to cloud and so on..But it always depends on your requirement what backup data or better hoq many restore points of this system must be archived.Best regardsDaniel

Seeking expert advise: about Veeam

@valt I also can not recommend to backing up vcenter; in my experience backup is not a problem but you will not get an functional restore so it is not useful to do it. as mentioned use the internal function from vcenter.What I can kind of recommend is a replica from host to host; here you can be lucky and the replica will work but the same problem with not “application aware” will apply here also.

Fun Friday #52: Which Database will you be using in v12?

we will stay with MS SQL 2019 Std. but plan to “migrate” to an AlwaysOn cluster and separate the Veeam databases. especially the VeeamOne DB can grow a lot.. from the performance perspektive it´s not needed but well..best regradsdaniel

LTO roadmap has been extended up to Generation 14

Tapes are still (and will be for a long time) a pretty solid solution against some threats.. and nearly the only solution for “real offsite”.I think the roadmap is more or less “subject to be changed” because LTO9 was also planed with 24TB capacity and now there is a compromise between costs and capacity; this can happen again.We are now moving to LTO9 (from 6) and I am locking forward to it.

Can I put an extra IP/LAN on the B&R server and have the traffic go from the Agent to the B&R, and the B&R will then ship the traffic to the LHR? hello @magnusvr 100 physical servers is a lot but it only depends on the change rate.not very helpful but maybe think about a virtualization project for your customer?anyway; if you try to avoid or bypass the firewall please think about that now “all” ports are reachable in this specific “local lan”. how you will restrict network communication to your critical backup infrastructure?some options are:- use a dedicaded backup network (add ports) and like @Link State said use the “preferred network” option. maybe some dns trickery (with an additionally alias) is helpful.- another firewall (different hardware for the backup traffic)- use another repository concept (sobr with a small “performance tier” and copy/move to the LHR after 1/a few days). for example a proxy/repository “near” the systems you want to backup with iscsi or fc disks from another system in the backup environment.but these are also budget topics and if the customer is willing to invest. i would first recommend try the “ou

Best route to go for a 65TB+ backup

hi,I like to bring up the downsides if you migrate from vmdk disks/vmfs datastore (or many) to an iscsi SAN disk or an nfs mount etc.; migrate to new hardware for example will be a big topic in the future and you much more limited without the hypervisor layer.I would recommend you to stay with vmdks/vmfs datastore but use more and split the data. also follow the @MicoolPaul guide and redirect the snapshots to another datastore (but please use the same disk tier like ssd to guarantee performance).But beside that think about “Backup from Storage Snapshots” for processing; of course you have to have a supported storage box and a proxy which is capable of direct SAN mode but I can tell you this will so much shrink the lifetime and size of the vmware snapshots.Agents will be also a solution (and if the system is a windows server there is also the option of “Backup from Storage Snapshots” too..) and its easy to look into this solution if yor network can handle it..Best regradsDaniel

HP Data protector Data migration to Veeam V11

Hi,we have a similar challenge (with DataProtector) in our environment and to make the story short; there is no way to migrate the backup data without restore it and backup it again; so normaly this is not a practical or feasible option.Without knowing anything about your environment think about the following; . setup a new DataProtector Cell server or convert the physical to a VM. setup an VTL or Dedup store (maybe with a cloud connect option for cheap long term backups). add the new VTL or Dedup store to your old!! Cell server and do a media/object copy of the needed data (don´t forget the IDB!!). add the VTL or Dedup store to the new Cell. import the media/sessions to the new Cell which you need to keep. test a restore from the new environment. shutdown the old environment and run restores if needed from the new CellSome considerations are:. migrate (and keep) the old backup environment to a virtual plattform to keep it without hardware dependencies; auditors also like this ;-). be

backup proxy for agent

It can be helpful if you seperate your backup traffic or have dedicated repositories for “VMware” and “Agents/Enterprise Plugins”..For example we use storage integration and the “normal” backup traffic from VMware goes through FC. The Agent backups (mainly SQL Failover Clusters) using other proxies to keep the dataflow to our backup enviornment in our DataCenter design..But in general dedicated proxies for Agent backups are not needed ;-)daniel

Hi,as ​​​@Mildur explained; a dedicated distribution server is needed when you deploy/update hundreds or thousands of agents “all the time” or if your network is restricted or if you do not want WAN traffic from other sites to your backup server (and so on).better keep an other thing in mind; in my experience don´t use the “auto-update” checkbox for the agents. in the past there were sometimes .NET updates needed for the new version of the backup agents for windows. .NET updates need a reboot of the system and until the reboot is done the agent/backups will not work anymore.so you have to schedule this change with the service/server owner before you update VBR and all components.daniel

Veeam-data domain

Everyone has commented on the retention lock but I would suggest not using DD as primary storage and rather secondary storage for longer retention. The only reason is restore from DD is very slow and if this is your only means of backup you need to set expectations for SLAs and RTO cause it will take longer being a deduplication appliance.  Never myself used the retention lock feature but we do have a DD we use for LTR for clients with Cloud Tier also.  100% agree; as a secondary target for backupcopy jobs with or without GFS or as VTL/replacement for physical tape library datadomain/storeonce/other dedup appliances are working well; they are build for backup but can´t hold the todays requirements for restore or anything like “instant recovery”.we are using hpe storeonce as a secondary target and even the at the time biggest appliance 5650 with a lot of disks and 2 dedicated physical 48 core proxys will not delivering a “great” performance.we also do all the dedup stuff on the proxy s

DR Architecture bests pratices

Hi,doing a proper DR is way more challenging then a working backup.I am not aware of your budget but I highly recommand not using an SMB share on whatever hardware as an repository.If there is only a NAS available please use at least iSCSI volumes from the NAS to an VM or better an “real” hardware server (maybe a refurbished one if budget is a problem). Also consider a secound repository for backup copy jobs.If both sites have a dedicated and stable internet connection you can also consider to place the witness in the cloud and connect the cloud with VeeamPN (for example).Please also check carefully the vCenter DR situation because for VBR the vCenter is absolut necessary and critical.Best regardsDaniel
