Thanks for sharing guys. I seem to remember similar maps for spam being sent as well in the past. I know that Barracuda had a feature as well for logging attacks against Barracuda firewalls though I never really used it. But it’s neat to have a visualization.

Veeam Proxy without domain

Remembering that you can use Linux server for proxys on your environment too. You can see this here: Implementing Linux Veeam Proxies | Veeam Community Resource Hub This. If you’re using a non-domain joined machine as a proxy, I’d suggest using a Linux box for a more lightweight machine and less Microsoft tax.

Duplicating a full backup (not a backup copy)

Why would I not just run a copy job instead of backing up the same data twice? The two sites have vastly different retention strategies, one being essentially a tape cache, so I don’t think a backup copy job is appropriate. Also, the remote site is limited to reverse incremental on Windows, with the local site using full, incrementals and synthetic full on a hardened Linux repository. Our data doesn’t change much week to week (museum), so incrementals are small. There will be a new full backup completed at the end of this week, so I can make a copy and bring it to the second site on a small NAS to copy into the Windows repo. Assuming that my previous reply about mapping the MoRef ID is not a valid solution at this point…. Here’s what I’ve done for this, and this is assuming that you want to just keep the data on the NAS and no import into a server at the recovery site. Setup your repository to the NAS using a DNS name. Have the NAS on-site at the primary location and setup you

It’s probably too late for this. but since you had to re-import the same VM and Veeam is seeing it as a different VM, there is a way (unsupported) to remap the MoRef ID of the reimported “new” VM to the old backup in the database so you’re not starting with a new backup. Since you just happen to be using v11, you can still use this utility to remap the backup.https://www.veeam.com/kb2136If you were able to map to the existing backup, then you also wouldn’t need to copy a new chain for the copy job as it would reattach to the existing copy data.

Veeam Backup Repository Access is Denied

Has the NAS applied any updates or any other changes to settings recently? What about the VB365 server? Assuming SMB access, I’m wondering if there might have been some sort of security protocol issue where Windows is able to communicate with the share, but Veeam is using something else? Assuming that different credentials don’t work as specified by Chris and Shane, I’d check into that. I believe some versions of some Veeam applications used an older version of the SMB protocol, so I’m wondering if that might still be the case and if that was patch up or disabled.

Thank you @dloseke , great post. I just want to mention about “Many of the alternatives discussed are enterprise-ready products such as Microsoft Hyper-V and Nutanix AHV (which is built on-top of RedHat KVM).” Nutanix AHV doesn’t built on-top of Redhat KVM, AHV is KVM based hypervisor. Sure, I suppose that it’s semantics and saying that AHV is KVM-based is probably a better way to state it. AHV has a lot of other tech added as well as I understand it as it’s been a couple years since I took a good hard look at AHV. Thanks for the input and correction.

Hi @dloseke ! How are you? Some critical aspects will determine the allocation of an on-prem repository. For example, a minimal on-premises repository is required to store SQL transaction logs. It is not possible to upload directly to the cloud repository. If the tenant/customer needs Instant VM Recovery, Secure Restore, and Surebackup, it is necessary to deploy a local repo. At this moment, Cloud NAS Backup is not supported by Cloud Connect. Due to these aspects, in general, when the customer has VMs in the environment, I recommend partners to implement on-prem resources. Sincerely, Hi Luiz. Hello @dloseke , just discovered Alto appliances from the following blog post. Disk Archive Corporation offers an alternative to LTO – Blocks and Files Do you have any feedback to share on this subject with Veeam? It could a great alternative for user some cases specially when you need a real “Air Gap”. I just skimmed the article posted. This ALTO (Alternative LTO) is different than the Datto Alto (and Siris) devices I’m familiar with. Datto Alto and Siris are more of a turn-key appliance for backups that used to run ShadowProtect on a Linux OS but now have moved to their own backup solution. This ALTO noted is more of an archiving solution. Love it when two vendors use the same product name, but to be fair, I don’t think either of the ALTO’s are big names in the industry. Interestingly, the look of the ALTO reminds me of the Storinator 45 and some of the SuperMicro storage hardware. Not sure if they’re related hardware...just interesting.

We offer a mixture some smaller clients don’t want the added expense so backup directly to our cloud connect, Generally, these are on one of our UDC circuits though. Otherwise its generally a PowerEdge all-in-one we tend to deploy. This is what we do. First stop is a PowerEdge purpose-built with Veeam, but if the client doesn’t want a Cap-Ex, then we are deploying Veeam Agents or VBR on their environment. If they have a NAS on site, great, otherwise direct to cloud via Wasabi. Either way, a copy will go to Wasabi.

Veeam & Veeam Supported Products Reaching End of Life in 2024

Wow...amazingly comprehensive list here. I just read about Exchange 2019 ending mainstream support last night. Fortunately, I only have two clients running on-premise Exchange. One is perfectly happy running a very outdated version of Exchange 2013 despite my best efforts (but we provide T&M support to them only on occasion). The other I’ve been pushing towards M365 and I’m sure at some point will be successful.

Extract data from backup in S3 Object storage created by Windows endpoint backup

This is interesting….I didn’t realize there was much difference between the two other than it pre-filling some information for you. I’m not sure I would have considered bringing up as regular S3-compatible storage. I think this would be good to bring up to Support for visibility as well.

With all the talk about Proxmox and those alternative options, I don't really see one sticking or being the leader of the pack until a big player like Veeam comes with support for backups. I feel like this is the sticking point as well. This is the reason I feel products like Hyper-V and AHV will still be the top choices if enterprises choose to move away from vSphere. However, I did mention here in the past that Veeam should be looking at backups for alternatives like Proxmox and XCP-NG. With that said, I’ve been told a few times in other forums when people talk about Proxmox and I question backups that Proxmox does have a backup server built add-on. I doubt that it’s going to be as featured as Veeam and will have the basics, but it does have the function. I don’t know anything about XCP-NG and backing it up.

VCloud Director - Do You Use It?

Small MSP here, but we don’t do hosting, so no vCD here. With that said, at my old job where we were a hosting provider, we weren’t quite yet using vCD, but this was 7 years ago when it was a newer product. We were making use of security permissions to setup multi-tenancy access in a vCenter. I’m pretty sure they’ve since deployed vCD though.

Love the write up @dloseke, especially the call out that vSphere Standard might actually be cheaper now than essentials for some SMBs. As mentioned by others, I’m watching and waiting to see what shapes up for Service Providers as well, given they were always licensed very differently to end-user agreements. Yeah, that was something I questioned them on….in what scenario would it make more sense to utilize Essentials Plus instead of Standard. And really, it’s only when you have 3 or less hosts but you’re using more than 72 cores in total, so basically 3 hosts with 24 cores, like dual 12-core processors (or 2 hosts with dual 18-core processors if those exist. Something along those lines. If you’re in the narrow area of having between 72 and 96 cores and 2-3 hosts, then it makes sense.

Very helpful article. It is a bummer for the SMB space if the prices you laid out stick. For those entry level customers with a single host or two hosts, I suspect this is going to be a difficult sell going forward. With all the talk about Proxmox and those alternative options, I don't really see one sticking or being the leader of the pack until a big player like Veeam comes with support for backups. Whoever can pick up some backing by the larger software vendors I think will ultimately come out on top. This is MSRP pricing. Prices will vary. I can say that our partner pricing from Disti was better, but still not going to make the Essentials Plus Kit reasonable.

Great summary Derek. I am waiting to see how our Partner status moves with them now but we have been assured we are good. Hopefully it does not change much for us. That’s a whole different animal. I was concerned about not even maintaining a partnership with VMware due to the new Partner Program being invite-only. However, after some deeper reading, Broadcom has published that they intend on bringing along all active partners. That is, all Partner’s that have had an active contract in the past year. However, I believe partnership levels will be affected based on their information published. But most folks don’t quote know where they will fall. More of that information should be coming out by the end of the month with emails going out to the primary and secondary contacts for each partner. There is/what a lot of FUD around the initial annoucements, but I think it won’t be as bad as folks assumed early-on. FAQ excerpt regarding VMware Partner Connect Providers and being invited

Good summary Derek! We just renewed ours in Aug. I don’t like subscription licensing personally. VMW tried their darndest to get us on it, and I was like NO WAY! I like socket-based; even with Veeam. Main reason I don’t like VMware’s subscription-based licensing is two-fold - 1. I get more ‘bang for my buck’ with sockets; 2. cost → 2-fold increased cost here, at least for SMBs. a. is as I stated..less VMs allowed w/out sockets; b. you are *forced* to renew support each yr. For the past 11yrs here at my org, I’ve used VMW support 4x...and maybe twice in 1yr. In other words, we don’t purchase it cuz we don’t need it. Generally, my boss and I can handle most issues. Also, we are not quick to upgrade to new versions, so I let all those quirks get worked out by others 🤪 As you stated tho...it’s all about the “cha-ching” 💵 💵 I think you nailed it exactly part of the reason they moved to subscription. Yeah, I’m not super familiar with this log, but it says the target directory name is “[backupnas] backup20240103-xxx” but I’m not sure if the brackets are in the actual directory name or are to denote the repository name or the name of the actual NAS or what….
