Moving production backups to a Scale-Out Repository to free space

Hi all, Running Veeam Backup and Replication V11 on an Enterprise license - we have been backing up to HPE StoreOnce repositories for nearly a year, but due to operational changes with more VM’s, additional encryption and retention requirements we are filling these up faster than anticipated (less de-dupe). We would like to move our older monthly/yearly backups to Azure storage for long term retention in order to free up space on the StoreOnce devices for our nightly/weekly backups and restores. Initial research suggests that creating a Scale-Out repository, adding the existing StoreOnce repository as the performance tier extant and a new Azure object storage container as the capacity tier extant is the way to go. The documentation confirms this will re-point all existing jobs to use the new scale-out repository when they next run and anything older than X days (whatever we set in the capacity tier option) will be automatically offloaded to the capacity tier. New VBR Server - From V11 to V12 - Transfer of License

Hello Forum,I have question about few things so that I make the change as smooth as possible.The plan is to create everything from scratch because our current configuration is really awful and time for change has come. Current Situation is like this:VBR V11 on Hyper-V VM Subscription: Enterprise Plus Instances: 20 (13 used) Inventory: 1 Hyper-V Cluster 2 Standalone Hosts Now I need to remove everything from this server and to transfer the license to the new one Questions:How to transfer the license? How to properly remove Inventory so that I don’t have problem when adding it to a new V12 VBR server? I know that few folks had problems when attempting to add the hosts to new VBR, something stuck on the old VBR etc. I will not do a configuration backup because I want everything from scratch. Please feel free to write any other recommendations that I need to take care off.I did it one year ago but I would need the help from Veeam Legends to do it the propper way this time 😁

RMAN Plugin - Read Bandwidth Throttling?

Hey everyone, Has anyone ever seen Veeam throttling bandwidth with the RMAN plugin? I’m working with a really beefy Veeam environment at the moment. Source data is all on flash, 40GbE networking available, high performance RAID controller + 4x RAID 60 repositories in a SOBR. Backups are flying for most workloads, VMware, Agent, NAS etc, but RMAN is letting me down. For example, a Veeam Agent using an unoptimised network path via the firewall can still do over 200MBps (Firewall is the bottleneck here), but RMAN is doing 5-7MBps and it’s on an L2 network with no firewalls involved. Testing with iperf can get 6-8Gbps easily without tuning between the hosts and the backup repositories, one test with iperf between the backup repositories was giving 26Gbps, so the network really is moving quick.When I’m going through the Veeam logs I’m finding things like this: plugin_co| [8b43] >> : Invoke: Network.UpdateThrottling\n{ (EInt32) KbpsReadBandwidth = 0\n (EInt32) KbpsWriteBandwidth

SOBR and XFS - Placement Policy

Quick question to the community -We are troubleshooting some Linux XFS SOBR issues. I know for ReFS you need to use the Data Locality policy for the Fast Cloning and wondered would the same apply to XFS?I would think that it does but on the off chance I can change it to the Performance policy it might help us get over the hump for our issues and then I can swap it back. These repos are NOT immutable at the moment either.

Veeam Agent for Windows says it's in managed mode

Hi there!I am installing the Veeam agent for Windows (version 5.0.3.4708) on a Windows Server 2012 R2 witch is up for migration this Friday. We’re taking backups to our Veeam server. But directly after I install the software it says that it’s centrally managed. I have scanned trough the Forums and all the KBs on the internet. I have tried recreate the database for the Agent, I have tried uninstalling (deleting anything in the registry that have the name Veeam in it), Tried experimenting with the registry keys (says read only mode = 1) and (managed mode =1)I have tried set those values to zero, and tried to open the application and then it opens, but once I click on “Create backup job” the application hangs. And once I restart the application it just says that it’s in managed mode. I have tried to run the Veeam.Configiration utility witch is in C:\Program Files\Veeam\Endpoint and try to remove the ownership with that, and use the combination of -force, and it just says that it Fays with

Migrate Veeam to Server 2019

I am currently running Veeam 11 on Server 2012. I would like to migrate to Server 2019. I’ve tested a couple boxes doing in place upgrades and it didn’t go smooth. So, I would like to spin up a new Server 2019 box and migrate Veeam. I’ve read the below article, and actually had to utilize it during my Veeam 11 upgrade to restore my config. My question is, how to I migrate since my repositories are on the Veeam 11 box? I have 3 disks on that machine with multiple repositories. When I go to perform the restore, those repositories are not yet on the new machine. What is the best technique for doing so? This is in VMWare, should i just add the old vmdks to the new machine? Is there a better method? I would love to shrink the vmdks in the process if possible. The backup database is much smaller than the vmdks.

Hi to all,I try to understand the behavior of my lab jobs.I have a backup jobs (of one VM) with the following settings:Scheduled: every days at 22:00Retention: 7 daysSynthetic Full: SaturdayGFS: 12M, 5YRepository: Hardened for 7 daysenabled a secondary copy to backup copy job with following settings:Scheduled: every days at 08:00Retention: 7 daysGFS: 12M, 5YRepository: Deduplicate storageOn backup jobs all work fine but on backup copy jobs appears only the first full (example of today) and then all incremental until the end of June and at 30 June has copied (created) a full backup (MY) not deleting any of the previous backups.Restore point Repository

Veeam Backup and Replication + Synology

Is there any best practices when implementing these two into work?Currently we have it setup as a SMB share folders and Veeam is sending backups to it.I did a little bit of research and saw that people are using ISCSI and connecting Synology drive to Windows Server and using it like that. As I can see they are using ReFS File System.What would be the best optimization when we have Veeam + Synology in our Environment.Veeam B&R and our main Synology are located in the same location within same subnet.After that main Backup is done we have a Backup Copy Job trough IPSec to our Branch Office where we also have Synology NAS with SMB share.With ISCSI I saw that people are using FastClone and I’m not familiar with it at all. What is the use of it?Any advices are welcomed 😀

B&R Community Edition Bare Metal Restore fails on Server 2019

Hi to all.I am sorry as the question was asked already, but it is hard for me to understand the resolution.I've been working with Veeam Community Edition for some time and I'm generally satisfied when it comes to restoring virtual machines.But I have one server, which is also the the Veeam Backup server AND it has other applications running. I am aware that this is not a recommanded configuration.I have a big problem: On the Windows server 2019 where Veeam Community Edition (VeeamBackup&Replication_12.0.0.1420_P20230718) is installed, I also back up the physical server.I can also create a USB boot stick in the Community Edition by right-clicking on the backup copy. This boot stick (Recovery Media 6.0.2) then also starts and you can search for your backup file. If you then selected the corresponding file, the following message appears: "Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows is unable to open backup files created by Veeam Backup & Replication".So I have a backup, but I can't use it.

This is a small-scale amateur emulation of a hacker’s website defacing followed by a Kasten restore.I have created a small static website with Nginx deployed in Kubernetes. The Geoff Burke Propaganda website is designed to boast a positive image of the individual, hard working and healthy living and to inspire Management to make the right decision at salary review time.A group of malicious hackers gained access to the website and replaced the content with completely false information and quite obviously fake photos. Unable to restore mailbox items that contain attachments

When I using Veeam explorer to restore mailbox items with attachments to a user’s mailbox on On- premise Exchange Server the restore job fail with the below error:"Failed to create items. The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send. Working with Disaster Recovery, Stress and Burnout, How do you deal with it?

Hi Folks, While not a technical subject, nevertheless since we are working with Veeam and that implies Disaster Recovery I am pretty certain many of you have been in the high pressure trenches of Severity One situations.Unless you have nerves of steel inevitably this will start to take a toll on your health and well being. People here are veterans of this profession so you have obviously found ways to survive and handle this. I thought it would be good to share what we all do to keep our sanity. Mind you I have been told I was never sane to begin with so you can’t lose what you don’t have but . For me humor is the saving grace.Laughing is like a reset button and it wipes the slate clean of all the built up pressure and anxieties and not just with IT related issues. In every situation I try to find a funny side of things. For example two weeks ago when I went to have my eyes checked again. I knew that they were going to tell me that I needed new glasses. What (else) can happen if an attacker gets administrative access to your backup?

This has been a hot topic since some time: With administrative access to the VBR server, credentials stored in the configuration database can be decrypted.That may sound critical at first, but one shouldn't forget the important detail 'administrative access'.Veeam stores its credentials in an encrypted state using the Microsoft Data Protection API and a Machine key specific to the VBR server. This is a security standard and a safe way of storing passwords, while enabling the Veeam services to use those for authentication.And just like the services, an administrator can access and decrypt the credentials.This is no secret and Veeam has even published a KB article on how to recover credentials from the configuration database: https://www.veeam.com/kb4349And again, please remember that this requires administrative access to the backup infrastructure.In general an administrator or 'root' will always have the highest available permissions and therefore can do anything on a system.This is th

lost restore point

We had a firm that upgraded our veeam to v 11.In the same time, we replace the SAN.The original SAN that was used for backup was replaced by the new unit.The original SAN was then used for the copy, and the copy SAN not use anymore.It appear that we lost all 95% of restore point that we had before cause of a disk space problem that corrupt the file for most jobs in the server. Now we only have one month of restore point cause. we lost everything else. We think that it was cause of a bad way to upgrade, but the consulting firm continue to claim that it was the disk space problem that caused the loss of six-month backup.is it possible that the disk space corrupt all the restore point and there is no way to recover the old backup or maybe from our old copy SAN that is still unused since the migration?Thanks for your help.
