Happy Friday everyone! For those of you with access to a lab/test environment, what do you use when you’re “on the move”. Maybe it’s public cloud, maybe a VPN back to a DC/Home, maybe it’s a portable enough workload you can run it from your laptop. Curious to hear how people tackle this when mobile 🙂

Hey all.  Using Veeam Backup and Replication 11 we backed up some files using a files to tape job as a once off outside of our normal backup routine.When I look at the properties of the tape I can see the individual files listed.However when attempting to restore an individual file I get the following:Can I not select individual files to restore?  Do I have to restore the entire tape or am I doing something wrong?thanksjc

- 1 to many destination replication job- ability to resizing the replication job menu/console- when I edit replication job and go to virtual machines tab, I wish to have more info of the source VMs presented like (cluster, vcenter, etc). it is helpful when you have the same VM name in multiple vcenters. 

Most of you are following the twitter saga. Politics and other issues aside I wanted to address one leitmotif brought forward by Musk and his horde of sycophants. Numerous times I have seen the argument “time to fight IT entitlement” used as a battle cry before performing massive layoffs. I have worked in IT for 20 years and while I have encountered some bad apples, on the whole the majority of Engineers and IT tech folk have been hard working and diligent people. I was working abroad from North America for 16 years and I was shocked when I returned to see the level of C Level, CEO etc entitlement. The salaries of this class of worker (and remember we are all a team as they love to say in the meetings!) had in my opinion unjustifiably skyrocketed to levels their predecessors could not have dreamed of. Happy Friday everyone! To those that don’t know, when you create a Scale-Out Backup Repository you can configure it to automatically create a new full backup if a required extent is unavailable. I had a few conversations recently whereby I was the only one endorsing this option. So I ask, who uses it, who doesn’t, in both scenarios, why?

HI Everyone. I seem always to be doing at least 2 IT courses at the same time. The reasons are many but I can enumerate a few: One I enjoy IT :), Two I am worried about getting behind, Three I want to get ahead, Four I am addicted to getting the course completions certificates and certifications because it makes up for my years of goofing off in grade school and all but the last year of High School. Back then teachers were not very politically correct so I was called a moron, a pain in the a, imbecile, lazy, annoying and many other attributes which in today’s world would land the teacher in court :) . This obviously inflicted me with deep impostor syndrome whenever I find myself sitting at a table with smart folks :).So I am always doing courses. Now no one really pays you do do courses so you have to somehow fit them in with the boring stuff. i.e. work. I have a few tricks but wanted to know if you had any as well. Sorry if this appears twice. I thought I had created the question, but cannot find it.Veeam backup&restore has an application config file that is protected by a password.How to I test this password? I do have something written but I want to prove it is correct.I’m hoping to do this without installing a new copy of the applicationMany thanks

I swear I’ve seen some posts about this but can’t find them.  I haven’t dipped into the Linux Hardened repo’s with immutability yet, but one of my engineers recently set one up for a client, but as a copy repository.  I’m putting together a proposal to replace our internal Synology NAS that is our primary repository with a Dell PowerEdge R550 with a fair amount of local space (8x 8TB disks in RAID 5 or 6) connected via 10Gb or 25Gb links. Backup data is currently copied to a SOBR at a remote site that is using a Synology NAS and Wasabi for immutable object storage.  Right now the primary site is keeping 30 days of Forward Incrementals with Active Full’s with no GFS retention, but I plan to ramp up some more retention locally at some point as I ran into space issues a few months back and ended up doing all of my GFS work on the copy repo at the remote site for the time being.Any gotcha’s I should be looking out for this sort of configuration - primarily in regard to using a hardened box

Email notification is working but I was recivinig somthing like chines letters and i try to fix it with dis article KB2692: Notification emails from Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 are sent in an unexpected language , and now test mail is working and whan the backup job is finished Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 in action many said that email notification is sent, but I dont recive any emails.Help ?

Because we had already the option to backup files directly to tape, it was already possible to backup file shares to tape without backing it up to disk before. But this was limited at least to performance. This will be be much better in v12.Another limitation was that it was not possible to copy a NAS backup to tape. This will be available in v12.At least in v12 beta media pools are limited to Standard media Pools and WORM Media Pools.

Recently I had to troubleshoot an error in Veeam Backup and Replication. Error appeared at File Level Restore operations. In detail: restore Windows files from a Veeam Hardened Repository.Environment consists of existing and freshly installed proxies and repositories servers. New repository servers were Windows and Linux as hardened repository (LHR). Mount server was a physical Windows server.Problem that occurredWhen we tried to restore files from LHR we get errors like these:   We also could see that mounting of the restore point worked for a few moments. Restore Explorer also showed first directories. After a few seconds, mount point was disconnected automatically and browsing in Explorer resulted in an error.After some tests we found out, this only happens when we were using newly installed proxies as mount servers. Hi all,Our setup is currently as follow: Veeam server in seperated VLAN, guest processing is now running with VIX with the domain\administrator account.Regarding the KB we must use the administrator account as it has the -500 at the end of the SID.For safety purpose we want to disable the global domain\administrator account and use another domain admin. Since I change the account, the backup jobs failing because of failing guest processing.When I test the guest processing, the difference is that administrator successfully can make connection with Guest OS via VIX (after failing over to backup server for guest interaction). Another account fails at this step as well.I could open 445 between the VLANS’, but I’m not sure that I break security if I do so.Are there best practise available for this kind of setup? Disabling UAC would not be the best option for us :).Thank you!

hi there, the last couple weeks i face a weird issue which i will describe below.i have Veeam B&R installed on a physical domain joined server 2012 r2. up to now i was able to add all other servers in the infrastructure (one more physical server 2012 r2, some VM servers 2012 r2 and a Azure file server 2019) without any issue.even a remote non domain joined server over a VPN connection.my issue is that i cannot add a non domain joined physical 2022 server located on a remote site which we have VPN connectivity, as a standalone server. need to add it as we are going to have a VN running there.please see attached, thank you in advance for your assistance.ps: i can ping the server and credentials are tested and working just fine since i can connect to that server using RDM

I have a lot of users that require a location accessible to everyone to share files on a temporary basis. (non confidential type info) My issue is that nobody likes to delete anything here… EVER! After having to clean it out multiple times I figured I’d run a scheduled task for a PowerShell script to clean the folder out on the first of every month.  The issue is now people wondering why the files were deleted event though it was explained and called Temporary_Data_Transfer. lol I created a folder titled  “_Instructions” at the top that won’t be removed by the script and the underscore keeps it at the top.  There is a document in it so users can review the date the folder is cleaned out and states that files will be deleted monthly. This has really helped clear things up with people not knowing their files will be removed. The script omits clean up of that folder by increasing the date to make it appear as a new file.  The also script keeps a log of deleted files so when someone is ask

Happy Friday everyone, Interested to see people’s opinions on this subject. RAID for backup storage, most (I really hope all) organisations will use RAID for the storage underlying their backups. But, what type of RAID do you typically use, and why? Vote in the poll and then share any particulars below. For example, if you use RAID 60, but choose to have 4x stripes vs 2. I want to add, there are no right or wrong answers (even you RAID 0/ No RAID brave people!), but there’s always a reason behind the decision, were you after maximum density, improved write vs read, maximum durability, reduced durability due to multiple copies etc.

Move method: [SEEK_SET]. XX/XX/XXXX 01:09:00 :: Unable to apply retention policy: failed to delete backup files Error: Input/output errorFailed to get file system object info: '/XXXX/backups/BACKUP_COPY_JOB_XXXX/BACKUP_JOB_XXXX/'Agent failed to process method {FileSystem.Exists}. Now I see the repository as Unavailable and if I try to rescan it and I receive the following warnings:Failed to synchronize REPOXXXX Details: Input/output error Failed to get file system object info: 'XXXX/backups'. Agent failed to process method [FileSystem.Exists].I can’t find any info about this specific issue. I’m investigating on repository system logs.Regards

We have a location in the US where our VBR server in DE seem to have some connection issues sometimes. Latency and packet loss I see in smokeping is not that high, even better than for most of our other remote locations. Still we see errors like below in out backup and offload jobs for 2-3 VMs out of 35 on a daily base. The IP is the local proxy there. Processing xxxx Error: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 172.31.132.113:2508   First job retry is successful most of the time. Anyhow, I’d like to get rid of those errors. Support suggested to change following regkeys to adjust.ConnectByIPsTimeoutSecAgentStartTimeoutSec But this did not change anything. I think we need settings for retries not timeouts. Any other ideas? Network team already checked everything and did not find anything. As I wrote, monitoring graphs also do not look too bad.
