Linux hardened repository - follow up and next steps

Following on from the excellent advice on what kind of storage server (and direct attached storage within) to use for a hardened Linux repository, may I push my luck to ask for some more advise or where to go next. Presuming I can get my hands on a suitable storage server and storage (as recommended) could anyone shed some light on how we’d need to set this up so that Veeam is able to back up the data on our Infortrend SAN. Here’s some further details of our config. We have a Windows server in our (remote) data centre that is running Veeam B&R v11. It is currently just making some physical backups of critical Windows and Linux hosts. These hosts are physically located in our office and there is a decent enough secure connection to make these backups over the line to the Veeam server in the data centre. However, I want to expand our use of Veeam to make regular backups of the TB’s of data on our Infortrend SAN which is also based in our office and this is where my lack of experience/kno

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 5d cumulative patch KB4222 - Critical data loss possible without the Patch

Veeam released a new Cumulative Patch for VBO365 5d. If you are a service provider and you are using VBO365 for doing backups of your customers to an object storage, please install the patch immediately. HPE StoreOnce backup copy jobs fails with file session error

Hi, We have a lot of backup copy jobs (but far from all) that fails with the error “Failed to dispatch repository file session resource requst. Requested amount of file session (193) is greater than the maximum amount available (192). According to HPE Veeam should know that this StoreOnce has a internal limit of 192 datastreams and should not try to open number 193. Anyone with a idea of how to fix this?

veeam replication from Prod to Dr

We have provisioned VBR in production, tecnically with compute and storage. Can we replicate the recovery points from prod VBR to VBR dr? In dr, we will provion as well VBR dr resources. upon checking with veeam, they can replicate in the dr but the source is the vcenter prod as well, meaning 1vbr is enough as long as they vcenter in dr. Thanks

[Heads up] Do not update to vSphere 7 U3 when running thin-provisioned VMDKs

A bad bug was found in VMware vSphere 7 U3. A ESXi host may crashes with a PSOD when running thin-provisioned VMDKs. Currently there is not solution available. There are a few workarounds but no easy ones: Downgrade to older version, Convert all VMs (VMDKs) to Thick-provisioned, Disable TRIM/UNMAP in Guest OS. It all started with a backup issue...but at the end...

Some weeks ago the backup monitoring team of my company had an issue with the backups of one of our customers… Where it started and where did it end... If you want to know, keep on reading The infrastructure of the customer : The customer was having a Hyper-V infrastructure with a couple of Hyper-V hosts and +/- 30 VMs running on shared storage (several CSV volumes) divided on those hosts The customer is using backup-jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication and is using replication-jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication The backup issue : The backups were running fine, except for 1 VM. I don’t know anymore the exact error in Veeam… The engineers tried several things trying to resolve this issue, but nothing helped. At least they contacted me if I had an idea for this issue. I quickly noted the error and mentioned that the cause of this error is not related to the backup, but that there is a Hyper-V issue for this particular VM. Fun Friday: What's the one thing you see in deployments that you just can't stand?

Hey everyone! Happy Friday! Today I’d like to create a safe space for people to vent, and maybe learn! What’s that one thing you see in your Veeam deployments that you just love to hate? As it’s Cyber Security Awareness Month, mine is definitely Cyber Security themed: For me, it has to be passwords that are so weak, it was barely worth using them! I’m talking the typical dictionary attacks, variations on the word “Password” or “Admin” etc. Fun Side Story: I once worked with a company that decided to have their RDS server pointing out to the internet ( ), they had a domain admin leave and instead of disabling the account, they reset the password to check over the account! And what did they set this key account’s password to? “Password1”. They got ransomware’d in under 20 minutes. Thankfully they had Veeam.

Win to synology backup error

Hi there. Need help with backup Windows machine to Synology via SMB. I create user with password on my Synology, create a shared folder on my Synology. Than i create New backup job in Veeam Agent. After i complete all fields (i passed a check pair user/password), i receive error (on screenshot). I tried connect shared folder on Syno to Windows machine - it's ok. One more thing, when i push the "Apply" button in New backup job, in the shared folder created file and delete after half second. What i do wrong? I translate the error: "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007B)"

Backup logic/functionality question

If I were to create a new copyjob to replace an old one, and I want it to only move over the very latest restore point and none of the previous restore points that are currently in the repository; can this be accomplished by taking a new active full on the source jobs and then running a sync now on the new copyjob and telling it copy over the latest? If not, can this only be accomplished by wiping out all current local and cloud and starting from scratch?

Different Veeam instance/server connecting to 1vmware vcsa

We have VMware private cloud, consists of different VMs for different customers, technically is has 1 center. We have a separate infra of backup, with them as a backup solution, different Veeam instances as well for different customers, Now we have ongoing project for backup and provisioned veeam instance1 we will connect to the vcenter of our vmware private cloud and assuming it will be successful, moving forward for veeam instance2 3,4, and so on and we will use as well the existing vcenter for different instances. Is there any problem or error since Veeam instance1 already connected to the existing center? Then definitely we will connect other Veeam instances2, 3,4… Thanks

Disaster Recovery from Veeam Cloud Connect to Azure - feature requests

In my job as a system consultant specialised in Backup and Disaster Recovery (covered by Veeam products of course ) at a MSP, I’m also responsable for the Veeam Cloud Connect infrastructure and offering. This article is regarding recovering data from Veeam Cloud Connect where I ran into a shortcoming… We are offering BaaS using Veeam Cloud Connect . Most of those tenants are sending a copy job to our infrastructure so they are having an offsite copy and optional insider protection as an ‘airgapped’ copy : see more info on my post regarding the golden rule 3-2-1-1-0 3-2-1-1-0 Golden Backup Rule | Veeam Community Resource Hub. We are optionally offering a yearly restore test of the backups we are having at our cloud connect repositories. DAS/NAS Storage server for hardened Linux repository

I run Veeam B&R 11 on a Windows server but at the moment it is just making some physical backups of a number of critical Windows hosts and a few EXT4 volumes on Linux hosts. The majority of our data (give or take 125TB) is hosted on a SAN (mirrored) exposed as EXT4 volumes via iSCSI on a Linux server. As an extra level of backup, I want to start backing up this data on a regular basis with Veeam B&R 11 onto a new suitable storage server with sufficient Direct-Attached Storage or some kind of NAS unit, preferably with this storage configured as a hardened Linux repository in Veeam. This storage server would be in a different location to the SAN, but connected over a 10GBE link. Has anyone got some advice on what would be a good hardware solution for this Linux-based hardened repo? Should I be looking at one of the larger Synology NAS units with sufficient capacity (not sure if this can be used with Veeam as a Linux repo or would a dedicated server full of storage be a better option. VEEAMON 2021 Delivery of gift

Hi all, Today I received two packages from TNT , being curious I opened them of course. The two packages are from VEEAM regarding the VEEAMON 2021 event. The first one is the Remote Racer, yeah we can play now . The second one is a sweatshirt from the VEEAMON 2021 event as a gift from Alfred, @Kseniya and @Rick Vanover for participating in the community during the event. [What (else) is new in v11 - IV] PowerShell

One of my favorite new little thinks in v11: Veeam provides a PowerShell module instead of a PowerShell Snapin. Modules are the more modern way compared to Snapins. See here some details about the differences. Here is the list of available Veeam modules in v11: New in v11 are Veeam.Backup.PowerShell and Veeam.Teams.PowerShell. The first one replaces the PowerShell Snapin VeeamPSSnapin in v10. At least in theory, scripts should perform as before. PowerShell should import the new module as soon as one of it's commands is started. Existing scripts will show an error when they try to add the missing Snapin to the session. In the course of this, attention was also paid to the user experience. So there are now defined default fields shown in different commands. See here the output of get-vbrbackup for example In v10 all data fields were shown. This was not very useful at first. The range of functions also increases with v11. We see 213 more commands than in v10. Most of them are for operatin

Hi everyone, Today VMware have announced the 7.0 U3 release for VMware vSphere and Update 3 for vSAN 7. Announcing vSphere 7 Update 3 - VMware vSphere Blog Announcing vSAN 7 Update 3 | VMware Virtual Blocks Just to remind everyone that v11a is going to be the minimum required version for this as per the release notes: VMware vSphere 7.0 U3 readiness based on the pre-release build. The official support will require full regression testing of the GA build when it becomes available. This article will be updated with a support statement afterwards. This doesn’t mean that Veeam actively support this, once Veeam confirm compatibility we’ll know if v11a has full support or whether a later CU will be required to be in a supported state.
