Check reflink and spared space on XFS repositories

I wrote already a post about checking Microsoft ReFS space savings. Now I want to show some basics to check XFS savings too.To check space savings on repository layer go to the repository directory and run: ls -lhsYou can see the size of each file and the total size of all files. If there a way to much files, run ls -lhs | grep total Compare this to the size allocated on the volume. To show this, run df -h In this example you see space savings of: (86 - 35) = 51G Another way is the use the command xfs_bmap. It works on file-level and is very technical. I am still not sure to interpret all output correctly. At least it can show, reflink works!To show all extents of a file, this command can be used:  xfs_bmap -e -l -p -v -v -v filename. Here also additional information like a legend is displayed.I made a small script to show the size of all shared extents of all *.vbk-files. Hyper-V 👀 Backup Modes

Veeam Backup and Replication provides two different backup modes to process Hyper-V backups, both relying on the Microsoft VSS framework.On-Host backup mode, for which backup data processing is on the Hyper-V node hosting the VM, leveraging non transportable shadow copies by using software VSS provider. [Quicktip] Failed Veeam Backup&Replication Upgrade

Recently I had problems by upgrading Veeam from 9.5U4 to v10. Upgrade process failed after a while. We found out, directory C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup lost its permissions. We had no change any more to enter this directory. Short answer: Antivirus software causes the problem. After disabling real-time scan, upgrade run without further issues. Antivirus software was configured according Veeam best practices.

Thoughts about these feature requests

Just though about 2 feature request, I would forward to my local Veeam account manager. Would be interested in your opinions. Or maybe there is already a practicable workaround.Change transport mode per backup/replication jobs This would make it easier to use a more suitable mode for selected VMs. For example it can result in better duration time when a lot of small VMs are backed up by NBD. Pre-View of selected VMs When selecting Folder/Tags/[new in v11]Tag Combination as backup source, it would be very useful to see all VMs that would be included at the press of a button.What do you think?

RMAN Plugin Backup - ORA-01012 Error

Yesterday I got an error for two oracle databases which are backed up via the VEEAM RMAN plugin.Strange - there are several database instances on this system, all but the two are working fine. And these two had worked up to then, too…And… I did not change anything in the VEEAM and plugn configuraton  After some discussion and research with our Oracle admin - bingo.He had moved these two databases to another Home directory and did not change the corresponding entries in the /etc/oratab. So - as shown in the picture - the backup of the database and the recovery logs worked, but the creation of the AUTOBACKUP failed and the ORA-01012 error was given.After the entries were corrected all worked fine again.Perhaps some of you will face similar issues, too. I did not find anything for this problemin the forums with a quick search.

What scripting/programming language do you use for monitoring/reporting/automation?

I am curious what languages are used by the community for reporting, monitoring and/or automation. I personally do a lot of scripting with PowerShell. What language is worth learning it?I wish, Veeam will replace their PowerShell Plug-In by a PowerShell module in www.powershellgallery.com.@Kseniya Just a little thing: when embedding code here in the community, PowerShell is no language-option. Maybe this can be added in the future?

How do you handle downloading patches and ISOs?

Veeam ISOs and updates are all behind a login portal, how do you all handle downloading patches and fresh installations for customer environments? Some customers don’t wish to supply email addresses for Veeam accounts or they’ve registered it to an IT contact’s email address and so again, due to the integrations between the download portal and Veeam R&D forums (and even here at the Veeam Community) it’s providing access to far more than necessary for a download. The alternative is using our ProPartner accounts for downloading these files but then the question becomes, can we trust the customer’s network? In the age of zero trust that doesn’t seem wise. Finally with all the remote working requirements it feels excessive to be downloading files from Veeam to my own machine and then upload to the client device. Upload speed of residential connections is not the UK’s strongest point… Curious if other people share these difficulties?
