How to bring back a server from Azure to on-prem using Veeam

Hi, not a long ago, we migrated most of our workloads to Azure. We have most of our servers in Azure and also we have some servers in our DC (on-prem). We currently use Veeam backup for Azure to backup servers in Azure and Veeam backup & replication ver 12 to backup our on-prem servers (with local backup repositories). One of our critical servers is having some issues as users keep disconnecting since we have migrated this server to Azure. After investigating for a few weeks, we are looking to bring this server back to on-prem to resolve the issue as its currently affecting our critical business operation. Here is what we have planned and need your advice on how can we achieve this:Stage 1 – Create a new storage account in Azure for the purposes of backing up this server. Stage 2 – Connect the on-premises Veeam backup server to the new storage account created in stage 1 (as an external repo or object repository). Stage 3 – Backup the server to the newly created storage account in A

World Backup Day 2024: SLAs & Exceeding Them!

Hi, for this year’s world backup day I’ll be providing two posts on topics that I believe are important for data protection, this is the first one: SLAs & Exceeding them!So, what is an SLA? An SLA (Service Level Agreement) is typically an accepted standard for a service. In the case of data protection, SLAs might be RPOs (Recovery Point Objectives) or RTOs (Recovery Time Objectives). The metrics measured by these are already well defined from various others so I won’t go over old ground here, but they are important for the topic at hand.Typically any organisation will have an RPO, the maximum tolerance for data loss when restoring from backup. World Backup Day 2024: Who Needs Backups Anyway?

As today is World Backup Day 2024, I thought I’d share a tale from back in the day. This was from my first proper job after university, working as a First Line Analyst (i.e., Helpdesk). I was, to say the least, ‘green behind the ears,’ as the saying goes. It was also my first time navigating the world of an office environment and working with remote offices.Let me start by setting the scene. Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2 were the Server Operating Systems installed on bare metal boxes. Windows XP was THE Operating System of choice, and Windows 7 had just been released. The word ‘virtualisation’ was not even something we came across. We pretty much had dedicated hardware for each server role required. Domain controller? Physical box running that role. File Server? Another dedicated box for that role. SQL Server? Yet another dedicated box. You get the picture. This, in turn, required a large amount of space to house all the servers. Zero Trust according to Veeam. Make sure to understand and not be led astray

Hi Folks, As always in the world of $$ money people will stretch meanings and at times outright make false statements. There is no point in going after them time and time again. Instead just make sure to read and understand the guidelines provided by the source. Veeam have created a great white paper on Zero Trust in Data Protection. They have spelled things out to make it easy for everyone to understand. So approaches that don’t follow what Veeam have stated means that you are taking more risk. Be very careful as I have seen advertising using the terminology of Zero Trust but describing something that is doing the exact opposite of Zero Trust. Again people can sell what they like, just don’t label something chewing gum if it is in fact asphalt.

VMCE, other exams what about the non tech preparation?

Another possible topic for a future VMCE study group 😃.We are not robots, although sometimes on a Monday morning I sure do to feel like one. I think that there are very few of us out there you can claim that our performance is always consistent. There are some people who I would term are forever 1 + 1 = 2. However, I know for a fact that I can be 1 + 1 =20 on a certain days, and before I quit drinking beer you could have stuck a random number generator in that equation for all my consistency was worth.We often hear about great athletes, artists and others talking about being in the “zone”. As I understand it this is a state where things are just flowing, complications become easy and performance is optimal. Whatever you want to call such a state we can probably all agree that there are times when we feel that we are getting the best out of ourselves and times when we are not. In other words there are situations when we are not performing to or even near our maximum capabilities. Personally, I use the “Advanced” deployment method, creating separate servers for Veeam and my ancillary components, Proxy and Repository. But, to save on hardware and software (OS) costs, Veeam allows you to combine the Proxy and Repository roles. I use physical hardware for these components. As such, I wanted to push my physical compute (CPU/Memory) and network (10Gb nics) resources to the limit on my hardware, so I combined them on 1 server. VeeamON 2023 How do you juggle your life, work, travel and study?

Hi Folks, One topic that I don’t think has been addressed or discussed is VeeamON in relation to all of our many duties and responsibilities. How do you fit it in? How do you deal with the extra stress levels? VeeamON was a success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended but we would be kidding ourselves if we thought that it did not add extra pressures in our daily lives. First of all some of us might have to convince the  bosses of this world that a trip to VeeamON is not, as the British would say just a “Jolly” i.e. vacation have fun only party. Yes we have fun but there is a lot of intense activity and knowledge transfer back and forth. I personally come out of VeeamON with my head exploding with new ideas and initiatives that I have gained from the sessions but even more from simple in person one on one conversations. Then there is the fact that no one is taking away the day job. Some of the folks there were having to simultaneously work during the conference or after hours. I

Hi Everyone, More and more of us are spending our days wandering around various CLIs. There are times when you need to jump out into a file explorer in the precise location where your pwd command locates you.on windows simply type start .on a Mac doopen .and on Linux (I will demo this since I am in my basement on one of my stashed Linux machines hidden away :) xdg-open .So here I am in my Pictures directory I would like to see the thumbnails quickly so here it goes  and Voila!   If the xdg-open command is too long for you go ahead and create an alias in your .bashrc file
