Storytime: how no backup did not save someone's bacon

Hello everyone A long time ago, I was employed as a programmer at a small hosting company. About eight weeks in, I had just returned after two weeks of absence from the office due to family matters. Out of the 3 Linux sysadmins we had, we only had one left. The only one left got tasked to replace a RAID controller on a faulty server overnight. When I came in the next morning, I got a call from the customer asking why their server was still down. Being the programmer in the company, I contacted the owner and the Windows sysadmin to see if they knew why. They gave me the cellphone number of the engineer and I reached out. All I got was a snarl from him with “I am still working on it!”Together with the Windows sysadmin, we decided to go to the data center and see if we could help him somehow. When we entered the suite, the only thing he could say was “Everything is gone, I can no longer find the partition tables”. He gave some details on what he did and we decided to send him home to get

Friday Musings before a long weekend. What does IT community mean for you?

Hi Everyone, I generally wake up in a good mood on Friday. Full of energy and ready to end the week and transfer myself in to relaxation mode. During these “feel good” moments I often find myself wondering about the “bigger” questions of life.This morning first thing I watched the weekly Veeam recap with @Madi.Cristil @MicoolPaul and @coolsport00 (notice both of the latter have “cool” in their usernames.. coincidence? I think not 😀). That got me thinking about the Veeam community and IT communities in general. I remembered what life was like before joining all of these great groups and came to the realisation that my IT communities, and especially the Veeam community, have become a very important part of my life. This has gone beyond the simple need for a technical source of information. IT community has added an enormous positive ingredient into my world. A Sysadmin Story: The cost of not updating your systems when advised, and when lives are at stake!

I’ve posted this before in a Friday Fun comment a few months back, but I think it bears repeating, especially because Veeam really did save the day, and maybe a few lives as well!  Details may be fuzzy, but it’s all true.  It’s a long story, so maybe set aside some time for some light reading, or maybe use it as a 15 minute distraction from working so that you can reset your brain.  And I hope you learn something too!I’ve been having issues getting this post, so as much as I hate to do it, I’m going to send you over to my blog to view the entire post.  Seems like I my have gotten a bit wordy but I’ll give you a preview below. Setting the StageLong, long ago (okay, it was 2020) in a galaxy far, far away (otherwise known as a small rural community in centralish Nebraska), there resides a community hospital who shall rename nameless.  We, an eastern Nebraska-based MSP, sourced this new client and it’s looking like the beginning of a fabulous relationship. I arrive onsite on a hot June day

Resume of 1st VUG Brazil of 2021

Hello everyone! So, last week we have our first VUG  of the year. It was a such good webinar that the principal subject was around the best features about data protection. If it weren't good enough, we still had the presence of none other than @Rick Vanover and @Kseniya. To start the event Rick and Kseniya talk about our Veeam Community Resource Hub and after this, they introduced how Veeam Legends works and what is the benefits to become a Legend. It was so nice listen them and I felt myself so counfortable with their words. Rick and Kseniya look like Batman and Robin of Veeam because they are very much involved  one with other about Veeam Community. 12.1 Favourite Small Thing

We all have seen the raft of big-ticket new features but there are a lot of ‘small’ things in this release as well. One of my favourite features is the Disk Space check when doing an upgrade. This should make performing upgrades a smoother process, especially for those managing multiple VBR deployments. How the Linux Veeam Agent can help you move your old Lab

Hi Everyone,Recently I took an old powerful desktop and leveraged Proxmox in order to turn it into a cheap and non intrusive (furniture wise) virtual lab. My previous lab was an old but pretty powerful IBM Thinkpad. I was not using virtualisation just various flavours of Kubernetes on an Ubuntu 20.04 server OS. Old Thinkpad​​​​​​I had done quite a bit of work on my old lab despite its humble characteristics and I was also thinking about re-inventing this laptop with some mini Linux distribution or even FreeBSD. I had already setup a VBR server in my Proxmox setup with a Linux repository so I added my Thinkpad to a protection group, installed the agent and ran a full backup. This was easy enough and I believe has been covered here many times so I will jump to the BMR restore.I downloaded the Linux recovery media from Veeam and created a new empty VM in Proxmox and set it to boot from the ISONew VM  After booting the VM I connected the console where I saw a message stating that if I was
