Vacations.. but we are family? A story of IT viruses and pandemics (not in code but in word)

Hi Folks, Being Monday I am in a bad mood and depressed about existence, questioning the meaning of life 🤣. Don’t worry it gets better by Wednesday and all cured by Friday. I have worked in IT for many years and vacations have always been an interesting intellectual study of the managerial species. I think it soon started after the year 2000. Y2K did not blow up the world so Managers everywhere decided that their many sins had gone unpunished. I can’t remember the first Manager who tried the “we are all just like family line” with me. Right away I knew that there was some horrible task that he wanted me to do during my vacation but did not want to pay more for it. He must have figured that a computer nerd social loser like myself had no friends and that my family were very happy that I was thousands of miles away. NKGG leverages AUTH0 external authentication to protect the Kasten setup from Junior Joe!

WORLD BACKUP DAY BLOG! Backups and IT Conspiracies!

My story goes back many years ago. At the time I was working abroad for an American real estate company. My manager was a decent person but very much into the whole "I am a manager" thing. He loved playing mind games with the staff by giving them the evil eye when he was not pleased and making elusive comments about imminent cutbacks in staff with a regretful but obvious smirk on this face. He also enjoyed demonstratively taking people into the server room for confidential talks. One day he asked me to come and have a talk in the server room so I knew that something unpleasant was afoot. He explained that the branch office in K. needed to do a server upgrade and he would have gone and performed the task himself but....blah blah. World Backup Day Blog - My little story

My professional experience with backup procedures starts when servers were only physical and backups only with tapes, long recovery times and a recovery rate of 70-80%.If the operating system became corrupted, you were forced to rebuild a server from scratch...Then the advent of hypervisors and a chance meeting with Veeam in the VMUG community event and it was love at first job !No hard-to-understand interfaces and incomprehensible logs and the restores worked !From version 5.0 to version 12.1, years of work and successfully completed restores have passed with the many thanks received from Customers for saving them from various disasters.  Of course, it is necessary to know it well in order to configure the jobs correctly for each environment and infrastructure, but the result is guaranteed.I really appreciate the effort made to guarantee the security features included from version 12 onwards, and I give a 10/10 to the 4-eyes feature in addition to the other YARA backup control and 'in

[Quicktip] Take care when using PowerShell cmdlet Remove-VBRSureBackupJob!

Yesterday I found a strange behavior in the Veeam PowerShell cmdlet Remove-VBRSureBackupJob. What happens: when you use this cmdlet to remove a certain SureBackup-Job using the parameter -Job, ALL SureBackup-Jobs will be deleted!. In my environment version 11.0.0.837 P20210525 was used. It seems the be a bug. [update] In the meantime Veeam confirmed that it is a bug. Gone are the days of "If its not broken, don't fix it"

I’ve been in IT my entire adult life. There is generally two mantras to IT. “If its not broken, don’t fix it.” “Update often.” “If its not broken, don’t fix it.”You know the people I’m talking about. “My uptime on this system is 1287 days! It is rock solid!”I get it. Its great to have a system you can rely on. Stability and system uptime is the holy grail. You want your systems to be 100% available because that means you can focus your time on more important tasks than break/fix.  These people are also a security expert’s nightmare. Vulnerabilities get exposed and new exploits are created regularly. Its not enough to protect your perimeter anymore, you have to protect every aspect of your environment.  This mantra has outlived its usefulness. Uptime of 1287 days on a system is no longer a badge of honour, its downright scary. We’re not talking highly available services here where you can take individual components down to patch them, we’re talking those individual components themselves
