[Quick Tip] Nimble Storage Integration VM Recovery

Just wanted to share a VM recovery tip with you all I recently discovered when needing to recover a VM no longer being processed by a VBR Backup Job it was in due to Deleted VM Maintenance Schedule. To assist with my recovery, you have to be utilizing Storage Integration technology with Veeam. My specific environment uses Nimble Adaptive Flash Arrays, so be sure to understand how your Storage Vendor’s snapshot technology works before assuming my “tip” will apply to your environment. Let’s assume you’re backing up VMs with vSphere Tags and during tag maintenance you mis-apply a tag, or forget to (re) apply a tag to a VM needing to be backed up. Or maybe you use vSphere “containers” to back up your VMs (i.e. Datastores, VM Folders), and you mistakingly move a VM out of the Container and the VM is no longer getting backed up. As a good Backup Admin does, such that you are, you review your VBR jobs daily to verify they succeeded: BOOM! Well done, Backup Admin! But, you weren’t being as t

Are all my virtual machines being backed up correctly and within the required RPO? Of course!I think..., or not 😉? Do I implement best practices in creating jobs?If using vSphere, do I use folders or tags or use whole clusters to add virtual machines to the job?If using HyperV, do I use whole clusters or hosts or in case of using SCVMM do I use tags? In another Topic, I wrote about designing a Proxy In This Topic will see about the repository design.We need to consider The key recommendation is to follow the 3-2-1 rule. Calculate 1 core and 4GB RAM per repository task slot. The recommended minimum for a repository is 2 cores and 8GB RAM.Sizing The recommended amount of CPU for a repository is 1 core per concurrent configured task slot on a repository server. Configure at minimum a 2 core and 8GB RAM repository server to allow the operating system to be more responsive. When sizing task slots on a repository you have to understand when and how many task slots are consumed. Any write process will consume a task slot. So backing up 10 VMs in one job using per-job backup chains will only write one file (VBK/VIB) in the end - so it consumes one task slot. Because we had already the option to backup files directly to tape, it was already possible to backup file shares to tape without backing it up to disk before. But this was limited at least to performance. This will be be much better in v12.Another limitation was that it was not possible to copy a NAS backup to tape. This will be available in v12.At least in v12 beta media pools are limited to Standard media Pools and WORM Media Pools.

Veeam Certified Architect 2022 - Achieved & Unlocked

It took two tries, but I completed the Veeam Certified Architect (VMCA) certification exam. While taking it twice was not my ideal way to pass the exam, I found the newest version of the exam much easier to handle, including the setup and much better than the initial exam release for v1. Below are my thoughts on the exam itself and things you can prepare before you book it. Training Requirements If you are new to Veeam exams, there is a requirement for taking the courses before you site the exams for both VMCE and VMCA. While I had the VMCAv1 already, and I didn’t need to sit in the class, I did nonetheless. I am thrilled I sat the course as it was a complete overhaul of the v1 course and a much better way to learn is primarily hands-on. For me, I don’t currently use it, but am in the process of getting it going again after about an 8yr hiatus. Transfer Hardened Repository & Associated Jobs to new Veeam Server

Hello Community! I am in the middle of modifying my Backup/DR environment → adding infrastructure, upgrading VBR servers, etc, etc...basically a refresh cycle as it were. One of my VBR Servers is used for DR purposes using Veeam Replication. I created a new server for it on the newest server OS (2022) and did a Configuration Backup migration. This was the first time I performed a DB migration and was pleasantly surprised by the ease of this task. Well done Veeam! As for my other VBR server, I’m not wanting to do a DB migration. I’m going to recreate most everything from scratch for various reasons. But, out of just under 30 jobs I have on this server, I do want to retain 7 of them. Sadly, as some of you know based off a Hub post from a yr or so ago by @shawnl :..exporting Jobs isn’t really possible. I really would like a Backup/Copy Job export function in the Console personally. Anybody else concur this would be a useful feature add?But, I digress. My main purpose here is to provide t

VMCE 2023 Experience

Good Community Day to everyone -I am pleased to share with the Community I scheduled my VMCE 2023 on v12 exam for this morning and was able to pass; even scored a little higher than the goal I set for myself. Understanding Kubernetes Networking can be a challenge. A couple of years ago I was tasked to setup a distributed Minio instance running in containers for use with a Veeam SOBR S3 compatible capacity tier. At first, I thought about doing it on Kubernetes but very quickly realized that I was in over my head. I had no previous experience with Kubernetes and I could not just “wing it”.
