Verständnisfrage - Backup from Storage Snapshots vs. Storage Plugin

Hier ist der Prozess detailliert erklärt:https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/storage/backup_from_storage_snapshots_hiw_hp.html?ver=120 Wie Markus schon erklärt hat, zuerst ein VMware Snapshot für die VMs, die die Platten auf dem Storagesystem haben. Changed Block Tracking Informationen ermitteln, dann ein Storage Snapshot. Sobald der Storage Snapshot erstellt ist, wird der VMware Snapshot wieder frei gegeben.Das Backup erfolgt dann von dem Storage Snapshot. Der VMware Snapshot wird also vor dem eigentlichen Backup schon wieder frei gegeben und “lebt” damit deutlich kürzer als beim Backup vom VMware Backup.

Best Practice Frage: Block Repositories und RAID-Config

Ich setze auch meist RAID-6 ein.Ich denke, SSDs sind sinnvoll, wenn du viel Instant Recovery machst. Für die “normale” Lagerung von Backup daten hat bei mir bisher immer ein Disk basiertes Repository gereicht - auch bei größeren Datenmengen.Allerdings versuche ich inzwischen die Repositories auf einen eigenen Server - bzw. eigene Server - zu ziehen, diese mit Linux zu installieren und als Hardened Repositories zu betreiben. Die Immutabilityist schon eine tolle Funktion - aber es braucht mindestens einen Server mehr. Spätestens nach dem ersten Angriff weiß der Kunde diese Mehrausgabe aber zu schätzen.

Yes, a Veeam server supports the plugins from the current and the previous major release.VBR V12.0, 12.1 and 12.1.1 are considered major releases. VBR V12.0 supports Plugins version 12.0 and 11VBR V12.1 supports Plugins version 12.1 and 12.0VBR V12.1.1 support Plugins version 12.1.1 and 12.1

Latest Version of Veeam Backup and Replication V12.1

IBM Spectrum Scale is not officially supported by Veeam and all special functions of this parallel filesystem will not be used for a backup with Veeam.You can do a backup of an exported Spectrum Scale share with Veeam NAS backup or with Veeam Agent.Full support for Spectrum Scale have the IBM backup products only - as far as I know.

Air-gap Backup solutions

The most secure air-gap solution is tape with tapes regularly taken out of the library and put into a safe or another location. Then the data on the tapes is absolutely not accessible from other systems. But this means a lot of manual intervention.You can do a google search, there is a tape library vendor (I don’t mention the name here..) that has a vault integrated into their libraries, this gets you some more security. You should try this how it cooperates with Veeam, I don’t have hands-on experience with this function. Other solutions are not really air-gap, but you could for example setup a storage system which has their network connection opened when they are needed only….

Backup eines angebundenen Laufwerkes im Windows

Auch mit einem VSS Snapshot kannst du leider keine externen Laufwerke sichern. Der VSS Snapshot wird für Apllication-Aware Backup benutzt.

Veeam Agent Backup to CIFS share very slow and fails

Hallo @Kid Lark ,SMB Shares sind als Backup Ziel nicht zu empfehlen, sie sind oft nicht wirklich stabil und die Backups schlagen deshlab fehl.Ich sehe, dass dies eine Sicherung mit dem Agent ist. Ich nehme an, das ist ein einzelner Rechner. Dann wird eien iSCSI Verbindung zu dem Repository keine gangbare Lösung sein, zumindest wenn du mehrer Rechner in das Repository sichern willst....Für einen Veeam Server wäre dies die empfohlene Lösung, um auf ein NAS zuzugreifen.

Great recap and thanks for discussing my topic 😁I was totally amazed that two participants came up to me at VUG Germany and told me that they thought the Backup Basics series was great and were using it to train their trainees.OK, that was also my idea - I can write down what I tell my trainees and make it available to others. But it's very nice to see that the articles seem to make sense and are well received. BTW, we did a little thread about the VUG Germany Meeting yesterday with some photos and and the titles of the lectures - as Rick wished. I will try to add some more text to each lecture in the next days and perhaps we are able to add the presentations, too.I link it here. It’s in German, but the pictures speak for themselves ...

Stuck VMDK From the Veeam Proxies

We have disabled Multipathing and LVM for all our Linux proxies (I think I have written a thread about this here in community). We had massive problems with LVM - not the exact error you are describing, but errors about accessing VMDKs, too.After disabling LVM and Multipathing we have nearly no problem with the proxies anymore...
