One important thing to remember if you do this on K3S (and I imagine Talos as well, I will try that later) if you want to use software virtualization emulation then you need to set it in the kubevirt CR:spec.configuration.developerConfiguration.useEmulation to true kubectl edit -n kubevirt kubevirt kubevirtand add spec: ... configuration: developerConfiguration: useEmulation: trueor before you startexport VERSION=$(curl -s https://storage.googleapis.com/kubevirt-prow/release/kubevirt/kubevirt/stable.txt)wget https://github.com/kubevirt/kubevirt/releases/download/${VERSION}/kubevirt-cr.yamland then edit the kubevirt-cr.yaml before applying. I will do a quick post on getting it going on a small 3 node k3s cluster in a bit.

could leverage the brain’s eBPF so right in its Kernel. Does cilium for EBPF still leverage a “sidebar” ;)

ah @k00laidIT you knew I was a Kubernetes junkie anyways and now you have enabled me 😂 even more. I don’t know why I had avoided or not wandered into Kubevirt before. The problem with Kubernetes is that it is like being on a street with candy stores on both sides, this when you are trying to stick to a diet. Anyways, better than drinking beer. I will do a few posts on kubevirt in the near future and see what I can squeeze out of my lego lab. I played around with Rancher Desktop yesterday but as @michaelcade and @saintdle said Talos should be more fun and will try a multi node cluster with it as well.

Just to follow up. I had a free moment and you got me intrigued so I decided to try this out on my non work (i.e. less resources) Laptop. Literally took 10 minutes to get it going on Rancher Desktop on windows. Now have not started to play with it so we will see but nevertheless:

Nutanix Community Edition in Proxmox, Part 1 Initial Setup

very nice :) Now get a 3-node going. I have a 3 node and a 1 node. Only issue I am at now is issue upgrading the 1 node which has a USB boot. Working through trying to fix that. My little lab might just jump off the bridge. Nutanix does like resources. Of course I would love to increase but am facing opposition in the family budget dept.. i.e. “you have enough wires lying around everywhere as it is!!!” I am hoping though in investing in IT stealth technology, i.e. I can hide the stuff somewhere so it won’t be seen but unfortunately it will still need to use a power socket and will be discovered eventually.

Also you can install both on your laptop too to have a nuke zone, i.e. where you feel free to go nuts and then wipe out without nuking the lab too:

Ubuntu is fine. Also checkout K3S it is closer to a real K8S distro and not that much more of a learning curve.At the end of the day though whatever you feel more comfortable with! If you have any questions please reach out :)

ClusterRole, Role and Cluster Role Binding

I have always used the k10-k10 sa myself in test setups. Make sure on the Veeam side the repository has permissions setup as well “Make sure that Access Permissions are granted for this account or its group on Veeam backup repositories where you want to keep backups exported by K10 policies. you can create a single node k3s then use helm for postgresql, not difficult. Then you can back it up with Kasten too!!

Great post Jim! I want to write a similar article, but using a docker container for postgres instead of a straight install. Man put it in a Kube cluster :) docker on its own is very lonely :)

Unpacking Object First Ootbi

It’s a pretty awesome little device.  However, I had to lock up within 24 hours of powering on, but support looked at the logs, found the issue, and said it should be something they’ll have resolved in the next software update.  No complaints about the support team for sure.  I should hopefully have my my setup blog post coming on Friday if I can find the time. Thanks Derek for the feedback. This is exactly what I need to hear, I can also channel any issues back through the line.  cheersGeoff

what does mean "out-of-band restore point" mean?

So basically keeping it out of the default location is one of the meanings. The other is using a reputable cloud-based backup service. Both options have advantages and disadvantages.” As always when it comes to terminology there can be variations you see out there. Veeam can chip in here to comment on their interpretation.

VMware Free ESXi = No Longer Free

So, we’re down to Proxmox and XCP-NG.  Any other options to look at? For free?   otherwise there are a few other options, OLVM, KVM, openshift, openstack, HCI, AHV, scale computing, virt.io and a myriad of other vendors.     the real problem with all of these and where VMware shined (earlier) was the support.  Early on in VMware days there wasn’t any competition, but today there are a lot of options. The problem is support, few enterprises want a support structure for their software, open source projects while good often have little to no support outside of the community aspect.  Personal opinion is that if someone came in on top of an open source platform and had a really great support option, they would grab a lot of share.  Yeah I mean I am not a business person but it seems like a no brainer, beef up your support structure and attack. As for community editions, what was the cost for example of dumping Tanzu Community Edition even before Free ESX. Not dollars of course but

Project Pace: Had to slow down, minikube is broken!

Project Pace is a great effort! Minikube is excellent for demos, or if you are a developer just needing to run and test code. There are others mini distros like Microk8s, Rancher Desktop (with K3S under the hood), KIND and Openshift local (for Openshift) and they all have pluses and minuses but I think Minikube is the best for someone just starting out. Even Minikube though can have challenges for someone brand new so Project Pace is especially valuable since it is leading you through step by step. Once you feel that you want to get closer to production you can advance to K8S or K3S but that is a big step. K3S is K8S in essence but the creator of K3S removed a lot of what he considered bloat. That is why it is so good for the edge.
