Offsite backup as a Ransomware protection strategy

Another good post @vmJoe . Personally, I use the last option you list (Replication), in addition to Storage Replication, and even another layer - offsite Immutable Backup. Great solution options, but none of them matter if the ransomware is withIN the image backups themselves...altho, hopefully a very small potential for that to be.Cheers!

What You Didn’t Know (or forgot) About Veeam Replication

Good question @Cragdoo . Have you tested a RfB job and CBT not be utilized? I haven’t tested this yet. And, the User Guide doesn’t explicitly say. Not sure why they wouldn’t because Backup Copy jobs can use Backup Jobs as a source & also use CBT.

Storage based snapshot integration for replication jobs - anyone tried this?

@Cragdoo - I don’t use BfSS with Replication, but I do so for Backup jobs, and like @MicoolPaul ..I use Nimble w/iSCSI. And yes, it actually can take a while for the initialization phase of the job to run before the Backup...or Replication, takes place. For my jobs, it can take anywhere from 7-10mins before the job actually starts processing my backup data. The reason I got from @haslund some time ago, was to collect the CBT data, if memory serves. Maybe he can comment & clarify if my memory is incorrect. I don’t use BfSS for my Repl jobs since using Hotadd actually goes a little bit quicker, in my environment at least. Anyway, as mentioned, using BfSS should help lessen the VMW snap time significantly for you on your highly transactive VMs.Cheeers

Hey there @olr -According to Sys Requirements, yes.. 2008 isn’t a supported OS for Veeam components. I’d reference the Veeam Upgrade documentation - Upgrade Center here on the HUB, which shares Release Notes & What’s New links, and of course the Veeam User Guide/Helpcenter which discusses Sys Requirements, etc. here and hereCheers.

What V12 capability are you most anticipating? - MFA for me! How do you plan upgrades to Veeam Backup & Replication? READ, READ, READ! SNARK - Do you tell your boss you are upgrading? Uhh..yes, or I get fired! How long do you wait before upgrading? I wait a month or so to see what issues have arisen since GA; VBR is the *only* product I upgrade fairly soon...all others I wait until a miminum of an U1 patch Do you set a test lab for upgrades? I haven’t needed to in the 12-13 or so yrs I’ve been using Veeam Great post! Cheers all & all the best in your uprades 😊

I want to hear your story! How did you start in Automation?

I’m a ‘work in progress’ still re: scripting. I’ve gotten into probably the past 5yrs or so. I only dabbled in it when I had to at a previous org..or, if I had to decipher someone else’s script here at my current org. I mainly script with PoSH, but also a bit in BATCH. I’ve certainly grown to appreciate it and like it. I didn’t write too much longer than a handful or so lines. My first huge success, meaning I wrote a semi-long script, at least for me, was similar to what Rick shared above → I automated configuring my vSphere Hosts. I went from taking about 90mins or so out of my day to configure 1 Host after vSphere install, to just 2 ½ minutes or so. What a time saver! And, the learning I gained doing this, encouraged me to look for other areas to automate. I still don’t do anything too big (nothing with functions or gui-based tools), but I do look for areas I can make my life a whole lot easier. One of my goals for this year, aside from going through Linux Foundation CSA courses, is

Server can't boot after bare metal restore.

Just want to close the topic. I rebuild the Linux host with v6 Agent and WITHOUT using LVM. Now restore process works without any issues. I know LVM is supported (and was supported) so not sure if it is root cause or not, just pointing to differences. Thank you to everyone who was helping. That’s good to know that LVM seemed to be the culprit causing your issues. Odd though.

Per-VM Backup Chains

If you use a dedup storage appliance or XFS/ReFS fast clone, duplicated data shouldn’t come into play. Regardless...from a performance perspective, it’s fantastic! :) Cheers!

Fun Friday #63: Fastest Backup Speeds

Using Nimble and BfSS, I’ve reached 3.9GB Read speed. I can generally reach over 1.2GB every other day or so; and, not consistently, but one run a day (this particular job runs every 30min during the workday). Not bad I thought! 😊 Cheers!
