Pretty gutted I couldn’t stay on this session. I tried both Chrome and Edge browsers, but I couldn’t get any audio from either. The app sound test was working fine by the way. Our company blocks GoTo.meeting for some reason, so I had to give in after 15 minutes of trying :(Rob

Calling Veeam Backup Jobs Remotely

Steph, I don’t think you said what O/S your scheduler is running, but starting a Veeam job from Powershell is pretty easy.Get-VBRJob -Name "MY_BACKUP_JOB" | Start-VBRJobYou just need to install the Veeam Console on the scheduler server to get access to the Veeam cmdlets.Rob.

AWS Custom VPC IssueIf you’ve implemented custom VPC’s (using AmazonS3Regions.xml), then you’ll have an issue trying to create Protection Groups in the B&R console. The error is something like ‘Selected data centre region does not support Sts endpoints’.This is because v12 ships with new endpoints in the default file which need adding to your custom file. E.G. :-<Endpoint Type="STS" Fips="false">sts.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com</Endpoint><Endpoint Type="SSM" Fips="false">ssm.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com</Endpoint><Endpoint Type="SQS" Fips="false">sqs.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com</Endpoint><Endpoint Type="KMS" Fips="false">kms.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com</Endpoint><Endpoint Type="KMS" Fips="true">kms-fips.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com</Endpoint><Endpoint Type="S3C" Fips="false">s3-control.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com</Endpoint>These are specific to the region you’re using, so you’ll need to grab the default region file for the exact entries.

VRO may be a good subject. Also, I’m interested in the public cloud side of things as I’ve not had much exposure to that. If you can’t wait Mark, our account manager organised a brief demo of VRO for us last year. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to do one for you, although I’d much more prefer it was part of a VUG seminar with a bit more real-world detail than the demo had.Rob.

Hi Rob, Just out of curiosity, and if I am understanding this correctly, Terraform is being used to manage AWS S3 buckets? Are you thinking of using Terraform to push out Veeam Agents / manage storage? Cheers, Dips I’ve replied Dips, but it hasn’t been authorised by the admins yet. In meantime, this is the closest I’ve found to what’s currently available in Veeam and Terraform.community.veeam.com/automation-desk-103/backups-as-code-manage-veeam-s3-credentials-with-terraform-4590There are definitely solution for creating S3 buckets and IAM credentials, but nothing (so far) that I can see for creating B&R backup jobs within Terraform.Rob.

That’s correct Dips - we use Terraform to create/delete the buckets. Once the profile is configured, it’s simply a case of adding the new bucket to a json file and running the update process.I’ve seen links in the past (e.g. https://github.com/VeeamHub/veeam-terraform) that talk about Veeam integration, but I’m not sure what it can actually do. Ideally, we’d like it to manage the backup jobs as they go through the most change in our environment.Rob.

Backup copy job interferes with backup job

Probably not of much use, but I have a large’ish estate with 100+ primary copy jobs which all have secondary copy jobs set to continuous. I often see the secondaries kicking in as each server backup finishes, but before the main primary job is complete.But, I’ve never seen the issue you’re reporting, so I’d guess either environmental or a glitch in the system.Rob.

Can Veeam catch memory errors during backup?

@ratkinsonuk - Perhaps the name should be `SureBackup’ish`;wink I thought it’s worth mentioning in case you’re not fully aware of SureBackup that it’s a separate component of Veeam B&R to the actual backup functionality. It’s most powerful feature is being able to create logically separated test environments using data from backups with the click of a button.I’ll take the £20 now if anyone from Veeam Sales is listening :)Rob.

New Veeam user or haven't attended a User Group in awhile?

The biggest frustration I have with basically everything I have attended from ArcServe to VeeamON is that everything focusses on “scaling up”, “in the cloud”, “Dev-Ops”, “multi-cloud”, Tanzu-Kubernetes-enterprise-multi-cloud ad nauseum 🤢 ... and that the traditional on-premises customer is essentially ignored, especially in the SMB and small enterprise segment. It very much seems like the SMB and small enterprise segments get “we recorded a video 2 years go. Go watch that and here’s a pdf manual for the new version” level interest from User Groups, regardless of the product. I sort of agree, but the reality is that you can’t get away from the emerging Cloud technologies, and it’s where people are heading like it or not. Take a leaf out of my book and bunker down for a few years when it’ll all come back on-site because people didn’t realise it was going to be so extortionate and we can do that ourselves on-prem for half the price….Rob.

We already have basic failure notification and space utilization reports that are sent to us. Are there other reports we could setup like no backup in x days? Or how many backups/replication is still going on at 7AM in the morning? Perhaps it’s in the documentation and I’ve just overlooked it …..

VMs with ISCSI mappings

Assuming the iSCSI data is mounted as volumes on a Windows/Linux server, you can simply back up the VM and the volumes will be backed up as well (in most circumstances).Alternatively, Veeam can back up network shares, so you might want to back up the NAS data directly if that’s a better/workable solution.Cheers, Rob

Backup job to NAS repository takes long time

One thought though. Have you collected and examined the B&R log files. They’re very detailed and will almost definitely tell you where the delay is.

Usefull reports

Thanks for uploading this. This Duration Report will be useful for helping us schedule our backups in quiet spots.For info, I had to make a couple of small changes. The script assumes it’s being run on the VBR server which isn’t always the case. I added a connect-vbrserver to allow for this. I’ve also added some extra debugging output, as the get-vbrbackupsessions takes around 5 minutes in our environment (I’ve previously requested Veeam add -DateFrom/DateTo to the cmdlet). Cheers, Rob.
