Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 - Blog Series - Part 1

 For this blog series, I will look at M365, which many people use daily, and why it is necessary to have backups using the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.  Now my approach will be coming not from a typical user perspective but from an MSP (Managed Service Provider) perspective.  I will start part one of this series by going through the shared responsibility model for Microsoft 365 and how Veeam plays a key role there.  As we progress through the series, I will talk more about the installation of Veeam for Microsoft 365 and other best practices. Shared Responsibility ModelThe shared responsibility model regarding your data relates to what Microsoft is responsible for and what you as the end-user are responsible for in protecting your data.  Many thought that Microsoft did backups for your data, and that assumption could not be farther from the truth.  When your data resides in Microsoft 365 as the end-user, you are responsible for backing up your data.What is explicitly each party respo

vm non-instant restore works. vm instant restore fails?

Throttling for internet backups

We are beginning to put together a cloud based backup infrastructure, so we want to insure that we are leaving some bandwidth available for our employees, and not hobbling our internal backups. I have been doing some light research, and was wondering if there was a way to throttle only the backups that go up to the cloud, while leaving the on premise back up to disk jobs running at full.  I have seen how to setup the global rules, but they seem to apply to all jobs unless I am mistaken. Thank you in advance for any advise you can give me, or point me in the right direction.

VMCE Exam

As we’re getting close to the end of the year, I’m curious if anyone has heard anything about a new VMCE exam. I passed the 2021 in Dec last yr. From my recollection, I thought the exam only lasts 1yr. But, if there’s not a new exam, or is severely close to being released at the end of the yr, isn’t that cutting it a bit too close for those of us who need/want to renew?Thanks.

VBO repo migration

Can anyone point me in the direction of a best practices/recommended process for doing maintenance on VBO repos, for example doing hardware maintenance on the VBO repo server, and want to move the data to another storage location, either temporarily or permanent migration?Seem to be running into a lot of Jetdb errors, after we tried to figure out the best process

Veeam Proxy without domain

For security reasons, our backup proxies should not be domain servers. Can anyone tell me if and how I can add a non-domain server as a backup proxy? Both the server and the proxy are VMs and in the same networks.

One GREAT advantage about Veeam Community Edition

This morning I was thinking about various backup solution, and one thing cross my mind.One of great advantage about Veeam over other vendors(BEYOND THE FACT THAT THE BACKUP WORKS. ALWAYS. GOOD. EVERYWHERE.) (If you have used other solutions in the past you know what that means.)is that Veeam release a free Community Edition, an almost full feature version to be tested heavily in our lab so we can fully understand the product, and try on our skin basics about backup and recovery.It is taken for granted, but it is a significant added value to me.So, thank you Veeam.Have you ever thought about it?

Replication seeding from a backup on SOBR

Customer is running backups of their VM’s at PROD site to at SOBR and running a backup copy for that job to their DR site (also to a SOBR).   They want to replicate some key VMs to their DR site as well and was hoping to seed those replicas from a the backup copy at the DR site.  Apparently seeding replicas from a backup (or backup copy) on a SOBR is not supported.   Trying to understand why not and how to work around this other than going back to non-SOBR backup repositories?

We backed out of the change and began to review.This blog post is a write-up of the troubleshooting steps we took, and what the root cause was.Firstly, we looked at Veeam’s statistics screen to review where Veeam perceived the bottleneck to be. Veeam reported an extremely high value for both the source and the network as the bottlenecks, with the target being idly waiting. We tested RMAN backing up to a local disk for comparison as the database team were saying that RMAN was awaiting further transmissions and found that it was backing up extremely fast to disk. Remembering Detective Mildur (and congratulations to him!)

Today, we lose a Veeam Legend!  For those that don’t know, you can’t be a Veeam Legend if you’re employed by Veeam. And that is what we celebrate today! 🥳 @Mildur officially joins Veeam today as a Product Management Analyst.I’m proud to call Mildur a friend (and Detective, Detective Friend?) since first meeting him here on the Community Hub back in 2020. Veeam Cloud Connect "Connection to Cloud Provider cannot be established"

Hello Veeam Community,there is a problem to connect to our SP Console.When i use the URL we configured with our Cloud-Gateways vcc.xxxx.de and i validate the Certificate from the SP i get the Error: Connection to Cloud Provider cannot be established.Has anyone some ideas to solve this Problem?Thanks for help!

 Are you tired of typing kubectl over and over again?Hi Folks,If any of you are planning on taking the CKA or CKAD certification exams bear in mind that effective use of your time is very important for passing because they are both hands on practical exams with no multiple choice questions. I completed the last question of the CKA in the final minute of the exam!You can save a lot of time by creating aliases. So instead of having to type constantly kubectl you can create an alias k and type this instead. It is up to you how many you want to create during the exam but for daily work life these aliases are also huge time savers.Ahmet Alp Balkan has a great script to create many aliases for your home labs or work. Fun Friday: Linux Distribution of Choice?

Hey everyone, I was working on reviving my decade old MacBook Pro yesterday, I didn’t want to put MacOS on it again because the only versions it supports are end of life, so inevitably I went down the Linux route. I prepped my USB, installed my distribution of choice (Ubuntu) and set it up as I needed (my dedicated GPU is dead so I needed a fair few tweaks to force the integrated one). As I was installing Ubuntu, it occurred to me, I gave ZERO thought to deploying anything other than Ubuntu, it’s just MY default go-to when I need a Linux OS. So, what’s your go-to? Why is it your go-to? Was it a feature, a security/compliance requirement? Was it the support? Or was it the first one you just *clicked* with?For me, I first started using Ubuntu on the 10.x release. I used Debian and Centos, but Ubuntu just felt nicer to use, helping me learn more about Linux and getting me comfortable enough to go headless on a Linux server (which would make me more confident when Windows started doing Cor

Veeam Service Provider Rental Licensing Questions

Require some clarification on Veeam Rental licensing.  Do rental licenses follow the same offering as the Veeam Universal License (VUL) offering listed in the Veeam Licensing Policy? Meaning, for every 1 license of Veeam Backup & Replication, they are offered in packs of 10 instances? We report per workload type (VM, Workstation) on a monthly basis to our aggregator.  With that said, does that mean it’s a 1:1 ratio for rental licenses? for every protected workload you have to license per unit (VM, Server, Workstation).Generally a little confused with the different offerings between commercial and rental, and whether rental licenses follow the VUL offering.

Happy Friday all! Today, lets talk tools, the right tool in the wrong hands can be catastrophic. What tool have you seen so the most damage to an environment? Whether it’s a built in tool/feature or 3rd party, I wanna hear! For me, it’s Remote PowerShell. I witnessed this being used by a malicious script to deploy ransomware to every device in the domain and the rest of the network. The script was harvesting credentials from users working on the infected endpoint and the moment a domain admin signed in, BANG, remote PowerShell to all!
