PSA - Hardened Repo Community ISO MAC Address Conflicts

Hello all! This post is more of a PSA regarding the latest version of the Veeam hardened repo community ISO provided by Rick Vanover on June 29th of 2023. If you’ve noticed weird network issues while setting up multiple repos on the same network using this ISO, this may help you. While working on setting up two repositories on the same network, I ran into a weird network issue where only one repository seemed to be communicating at a time, noticed after running a ping to both at the same time and seeing only one was responding at any given time. After further troubleshooting, what I noticed is that both machines had generated the same software-defined MAC address for 802.3ad bonds. This MAC address is usually uniquely generated from the machine-id to avoid conflicts, but when digging deeper I noticed that both servers also had the same machine-id. It seems that the machine-id may be baked into the ISO and as a result, any machines we installed using this ISO ended up generating the sam

The importance of testing these backups!

Hello, I wanted to share with you a customer’s feedback that I encountered. They contacted me to report extremely slow restoration times during a file restoration process.I was a bit surprise cause I had tested all types of restauration on his infrastructure and everything worked properly.The restore type : “Guest File Restore” OS: Microsoft Restore option: Keep Folder Size : 64 MB Restore Time: 1h30min 😱I first checked the log in the History I directly noticed the fact that the restoration is via vSphere guest interaction API and not using a Veeam proxy .After a brief exchange with the admin, it figured out that the VM to which the files should be restored is in a new Vlan ! Restore Exchange Mailbox Items from Storage Snapshot

Using Veeam to orchestrate storage snapshots is a fast, reliable way to have frequent restore points and quick restores. Unfortunately, unlike a VMware backup, storage snapshots on databases are not application aware. Restoring application items from a storage snapshot will often give you a blank explorer window. The first thing you will want to do is restore from the storage snapshot, and select a Host to mount the SAN volume on With the explorer up it will look empty, but the volumes will be mounted to your PC.Click Add Store, or right click All Stores and Add a Mailbox Database Next, we will point the explorer to the specific Exchange mailbox database. If you go to C:\VeeamFLR\*VMname* you can see Volumes listed as folders there that are the mount points to the disks. This should mirror the folder structure on your Exchange server. AI generated tutorial, complete and utter fail! Veeam keep your trainers!! :)

Hi Folks, I was just forced to watch for the first time an AI generated tutorial/presentation. This was not Veeam training but I decided to send out this feedback just in case anyone at Veeam is thinking about jumping on this bandwagon.All of this hype about Chat/AI etc crashed miserably in my eyes after watching this content. The AI generated lady doing the tutorial had less personality and sincerity than RD2 in Star wars (reminder RD2 could only beep and not speak). The phoney AI generated smile would have been better placed in the film Aliens on the monsters that emerged from people’s stomachs.Then there were the pronunciation errors. Living in Toronto I hear all sorts of different pronunciations in English but they normally add some spice to the discussion. Italian, French, Chinese etc native speakers all have different pronunciations and if anything they add flavour to the conversation. Machine AI however is horrendous. My Sysadmin story is rather old, from my own beginnings in IT. It’s not directly Veeam related but the message is valuable for every backup administrator.The outageThere’s been a certain Linux VM which was running a very critical software for that company. Software updates were done by the vendor itself so there wasn’t much to take care of. Of course, besides including it in the backup process.At some point there was an outage in the datacenter which shutdown all virtual machines. After the power had been restored, all virtual machines were started again without any issues; at least almost without any issues.The Linux VM didn’t come up and stayed at the boot screen without any progress. Hello,Today I try to update Postgre SQL and when I execute the installer, I got the error : prerunscript.command.line.errorI go to the log file on path : c:\users\username\appdata\local\temp\2 and find file "installbuilder_installer.log" It contains the reason : Windows Script Host Access Is Disabled on This Machine. Remote access to my Lab Network Yes, you read it right it has a feature that enables the bypass / routing of the networks you have in the Tailscale host, so you can access that network from the remote connected device, in case you need to access a device that has not capability to install Tailscale in it, I use it to access my router, my center and my storage appliance. Proxy form outside routing my internet traffic. Looking forward to Hyper-V 2025

With the recent announcement that Hyper-V is strategic to Microsoft, as the main focus of Server 2025 you can imagine I've spent more time on the topic than usual lately. I normally don’t post on here, but I figured I'd share. To get the basic stuff out of the way, yes you can Instantly Recovery ‘any’ workload to Hyper-V, and it can be automated with PowerShell - it will probably make it easier at scale. And for those new to Hyper-V with Veeam, on-host backup processing is the way to go. Did you know we recently updated the user guide to explain how Veeam selects VM generation upon arrival?Veeam supports Azure Stack HCI too, and it has been on a much faster release cadence, so a lot of the features may have been seen before - but I think the key take away is that, there is significant forward motion for Hyper-V, and a continued path to purchasing perpetual licenses for it.I wish that central management of Hyper-V was addressed a bit differently.
