Comparison of vSphere Transport Modes

Each time I talk to customers at installation dates or health-checks, I spend some time talking about vSphere transport modes. These are: Direct Storage Access, Storage Integration (I take this as a separate mode), Virtual Appliance and Network mode. This is a topic with a lot of facets still not widely known. Here I will try to compare these transport modes on the basis of some characteristics. Direct Storage AccessSecurity Honestly rather bad. Since production volumes are presented to a Veeam proxy host, a local admin/root can easily delete all volumes within seconds. Much better if the storage system is able to present volumes in read-only mode. Network As the name suggests, backup traffic is kept in storage network. Configuration Effort It is more complex to configure than other modes. This is also because you need to configure different layers like storage switches and arrays. You may have to configure the array with each new volumes for backup too. It could be more tricky to

Veeam Supported Products Reaching End of Life in 2023

Complementing my last post highlighting the Veeam software releases reaching end of support in 2023, I’m once again providing an expanded list of software that Veeam works with, that will be approaching end of life in 2023. Why does this matter when I’m just trying to protect the data? Times change, and software changes with them, until it’s no longer supported. At any point, a patch to an operating system, a .NET framework update, or anything else really, could end up with the software no longer being backed up properly, or not working at all in production. Without valid support there’s no process to get a fix, and whilst your backup software may still be in support with Veeam, if the vendor won’t fix the problem, it’s time to start panicking.With this in mind, let’s explore the software & operating systems being declared end of life in 2023 so we can start planning our upgrades/migrations if necessary. Microsoft We may as well start with one of, or potentially the largest softwar

CDP - Retention Policies A retention policy defines for how long Veeam Backup & Replication must store restore points for VM replicas. RMAN Plugin Backup - ORA-01012 Error

Yesterday I got an error for two oracle databases which are backed up via the VEEAM RMAN plugin.Strange - there are several database instances on this system, all but the two are working fine. And these two had worked up to then, too…And… I did not change anything in the VEEAM and plugn configuraton  After some discussion and research with our Oracle admin - bingo.He had moved these two databases to another Home directory and did not change the corresponding entries in the /etc/oratab. So - as shown in the picture - the backup of the database and the recovery logs worked, but the creation of the AUTOBACKUP failed and the ORA-01012 error was given.After the entries were corrected all worked fine again.Perhaps some of you will face similar issues, too. I did not find anything for this problemin the forums with a quick search.

When to use Planned Failover 👀

  If you know that your primary VMs are about to go offline, you can proactively switch the workload to their replicas. A planned failover is smooth manual switching from a primary VM to its replica with minimum interrupting in operation. You can use the planned failover, for example, if you plan to perform datacenter migration, maintenance or software upgrade of the primary VMs. You can also perform planned failover if you have an advance notice of a disaster approaching that will require taking the primary servers offline.When you start the planned failover, Veeam Backup & Replication performs the following steps:The failover process triggers the replication job to perform an incremental replication run and copy the un-replicated changes to the replica. SQL Server 2019 – TDE DB Recovery Errors, Log Shipping & CU16

Microsoft have recently released SQL Server 2019 CU16, and in this blog post I’m calling out a very specific bug that Microsoft have addressed, and the implications this has to business-as-usual operations. Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) & Compressed BackupsMicrosoft have been tracking a bug related to using TDE and compressing backups, impacting both database, and log backup types. Should you attempt to restore a compressed backup of a TDE database, you’ll likely receive a message similar to the below:Msg 3241, Level 16, State 18, LineThe media family on device 'BackupFileName' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.Oh dear. This isn’t good! Prior to CU16, Microsoft’s workaround was to simply not compress your backups. [What (else) is new in v12 - VIII] TAPE - NAS to Tape Job

Because we had already the option to backup files directly to tape, it was already possible to backup file shares to tape without backing it up to disk before. But this was limited at least to performance. This will be be much better in v12.Another limitation was that it was not possible to copy a NAS backup to tape. This will be available in v12.At least in v12 beta media pools are limited to Standard media Pools and WORM Media Pools.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure: Repository Backup has Failed

 Ever had your backups fail? I sure have! But it’s all part of the fun & games of learning exactly how these systems work.Recently I spun up another instance of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure, and as part of my security mindset, I configured some elements of hardening to my infrastructure. Well, I missed a setting that I’m going to share with you today. Worker Job Completed with Error So, I had Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure working, my daily snapshot job was also running fine, but it was the daily backup that wasn’t working. Some of the key terms I could pick out from the logs were ‘Worker: <Resource Name> (IP Address:Port): job completed with error’, ‘Error: This request is not authorised to perform this operation’, ‘Status 403’, and ‘ErrorCode AuthorizationFailure’ were the error messages I was being greeted with. Dissecting the Errors The key hint here was the job task ‘Backing up <VM Name> to Backup Repository. Veeam Backup Repository Decompress Setting with Pure Storage FlashArray//C

OFFLINE backup copy using rotating USB disks – part 4

Backup of Windows 10 PC with server-managed Agent

Hello community,I don’t know if this is common knowledge (I guess all the hardcore Windows Admins hanging around here know this), but I think I share this, nevertheless.I have tried to back up a Windows 10 PC with a server managed VEEAM agent for the first time today (up to now there were Windows Server only). In this environment is no Windows Domain present, local users on all systems only.When I tried to connect to the Windows 10 PC from my VEEAM Server to create a managed server the connection was refused. No specific error message, it just failed… OK, I tried to ping the PC and to connect to it, all ok. Then I tried an administrative share and it failed, too. So, it seems not to be a VEEAM Problem, but a Windows problem…I did some internet research and found that the Windows administrative shares are not accessible by local accounts over the network since Windows Vista. OK, this is some time, but… when do you do such a thing?After some more reading I finally found the solution. You

Veeam Certified Architect 2022 - Achieved & Unlocked

 It took two tries, but I completed the Veeam Certified Architect (VMCA) certification exam.  While taking it twice was not my ideal way to pass the exam, I found the newest version of the exam much easier to handle, including the setup and much better than the initial exam release for v1.  Below are my thoughts on the exam itself and things you can prepare before you book it. Training Requirements If you are new to Veeam exams, there is a requirement for taking the courses before you site the exams for both VMCE and VMCA.  While I had the VMCAv1 already, and I didn’t need to sit in the class, I did nonetheless.  I am thrilled I sat the course as it was a complete overhaul of the v1 course and a much better way to learn is primarily hands-on.   You can read my course review here -Veeam Certified Architect 2022 - Course ReviewFurther, each is now a “versioned” exam for each year - in this case, VMCA 2022, with versioning done on an annual basis.  Each exam will need to be independently

Backups, Trust, Boundaries, and Cloud Security Considerations in 2022

Cloud adoption continues to increase as organisations are either taking their first steps into the cloud, or progressing their IT strategies, whether it’s a full cloud migration, multi-cloud or delivering a hybrid architecture.A great workload to leverage the cloud has been as a backup repository. By using the cloud, we can meet multiple improvements to our 3-2-1-1-0 minimum strategy for backups. In case you aren’t familiar with the 3-2-1-1-0 strategy, it is:3 copies of data, across 2 different backup media types, 1 of which must be off-site to the production environment, 1 backup at least must be offline or “immutable”, with 0 backup validation errors. Security BoundariesOne threat that the 3-2-1-1-0 strategy doesn’t cover explicitly is the concept of security boundaries.
