Issue with NAS backup to object storage at iDRIVE

I was going to say, I haven’t tried IDrive but I’d make sure I can write other data there first.  I also don’t do NAS, but I can’t imagine there’d be as much likelihood for errors there.

Can't find non-existent vm to delete

Version 9.5 Update 4  Woah...blast from the past.  I’d suggest upgrading to a newer/supported version, but that said, I think you’re going to have to stair step the upgrade to v10 and then to v12 or something along those lines.  I’d suggest working with Veeam support to do this to make sure you don’t have any dependencies that will prevent you from upgrading, especially as you learn more about the product.

VMware Odyssey | Online Challenge by Hands-on Labs (only today)

Awesome job Max.  I too got an email about winning a prize with no information about what it was.  That said, they are using it a lot for social media because while they asked for an address to ship the prize, they also asked for social media accounts to take in, and requested that we take a picture with our prize and tag them on our social media as well so that they can use it for their marketing also.  I mean...I don’t mind doing that for a free gift.  😁

Can you reconnect to an Azure blob storage to connect to the backups on it?

Yes, object storage is comprised of the blocks of data from the backup files, and is not the actual backup files itself.  This makes is much more space efficient because you aren’t keeping duplicate blocks that you would typically have.  As a case in point, I have a client that had existing Veeam backups on a NTFS backed repository that was consuming 29.8TB.  I placed a copy of this data in Wasabi object storage for an offsite immutable copy and when it was all said and done, it consumed 15.4TB of space.  Clearly this is quite efficient.  Back to your question, as Christ noted, once you’ve reconnected to the storage bucket, it should rescan the data and be able to reassemble the backup information based off of the metadata and associated blocks of data in the repo and then it will import that backup data into the configuration database.

That’s one thing I appreciate about my boss.  He understands family first.  There are days that work gets prioritized for me (I’m a bit of a workaholic), but when I’m not in, he’ll do everything he can to keep things off of me, even if I’m the last stop for things broken in our org.  But if that does happen, he’ll make it right.

Veeam B+R, ESXi host backup: TrueNAS Scale VM failed to backup need help understanding why.

This looks to me as not a VMware error, but something with the actual VM.  I’d double check by trying to manipulate the VM manually such as taking a snapshot and committing it, powering off the VM, etc. I’d assume that once you work through whatever issue you have happening here, it’ll be able to be snapshotted and backed up normally.

Veeam B+R: Is it possible to backup the entire ESXi host, not just the individual vm's?

Shane beat me to it, but check his KB for backing up the host configuration.  It’s not hard (though I agree that it’s not the most intuitive), and it can be scripted.  But in a lot of scenarios, there’s not a lot of need.  Setting up a host tends to be pretty easy, especially in small environment.  VMware also has ways to configure hosts using host templates and the like should a host need to be rebuilt in a more automated fashion such as may be found in larger environments.

Just remember there is an I in team.  It’s in the A-Hole.The “i” in TEAM And honestly, I don’t really take vacations all that often.  But I have a taken a couple, and have gotten calls during them.  But to be fair, I did save a client from a flood with a little bit of remote work on a mini-”staycation” (the flooding also changed my travel plans).  But for those rare instances of an actual vacation, my team (and boss) have done a good job of leaving me alone because they know I need to unplug.  We’ll see how things go when I’m out in November for 10 days.  The main thing is to make sure you have a good team that will support your mental health and a need to unplug.  Mine does a good job of that...if I get a phone call or email, it’s because something really bad has happened and I’m their only hope, but that’s few and far between.

@superfraktal yes...from the Console = the UI. MPIO is available if you install it from Programs/Features in Windows (Control Panel). If you use iSCSI...yes, you should indeed use this feature so as to use all/both paths.  This would be if you’re connecting the ISCSI array to Windows directly via the ISCSI initiator.  Sounds like he’s mounting to ESXi and is maybe using a RDM, or is mounting as a datastore and using a VMFS volume (hopefully the RDM).

  @dloseke Yes, I am on a VM and we use ESXi as a hypervisor. I’ve checked some VMs and their *.vmx files, there is no such a line devices.hotplug = "false" and I think it’s enabled by default. Please note that currently we are using 77 Veeam servers (with QNAPs). If our backups are at risk (because of these ReFS issue) we must implement this to every VM, but so far only in one location we got RAW unexpectedly. All of you guys gave me a lot of information already, the most important one was actually with ReFS problem…  This would only need to be on the repository servers.  If you have 77 repo servers, I feel for you!  I would tend to recommend Linux repo’s now with XFS given the issues that Windows has had with REFS at times, but with newer versions of REFS, it seems to be getting better.

Sysadmin Story: Horror Story!

Thanks for the followup on this...very insightful.  And good thought on the mapped drives.  That’s super common, but would be a relatively easy fix to help make that hop to the server a bit harder.  Now that we’ve put it out there, I guess we can plan on malware to begin looking for shortcuts to UNC paths at any time, if they don’t already do so.  🤔

I hear you 😀 Actual GUI? Well, did you know I started my IT career on IBM Mainframe?! Have a look what’s ready:     VERY cool! I’ll test it when I get time.   Ex IBMer here. What did you do with Mainframes? I worked on Z-Series boxes for several years doing service.  Crazy they are up to the Z16 now.    I never messed with Z-series other than helping to make sure the mainframe guys were able to get their VTL’s to connect to the Data Domains.  I had I-series guys next to me as well.  I’ll tell you now, if you ever wanted a lucrative career, go into Z or I because there aren’t a lot of folks around anymore that know that stuff, and IBM snaps up those folks right away for what I’m told are the two colleges that still teach it.  I did have to marvel every time we opened the Z-series cabinets though….IBM builds some really nice looking, well thought out gear with some nicely structured cabinets.  Z, I, X, I worked on

AWS Hybrid Recommendation

I have to agree with Drew on this.  You can save money by dumping your capacity tier to Wasabi over S3 for sure.  Technically, archive on glacier is a small amount cheaper than Wasabi last I checked if you wanted to have an Archive tier, but I honestly am not sure that it’s needed.  I personally use Wasabi for Capacity and don’t use an archive tier.Also, Wasabi has a simple little cost calculator that you may want to check out.  I can’t imagine that it covers all use cases, but looking at it, it’s astonishing how much difference there is in the cost of storing data between the hyperscalers and folks like Wasabi.https://wasabi.com/cloud-storage-pricing/#cost-estimatesIf for some reason you don’t like Wasabi (but what’s not to like), Backblaze B2 may be another good option.  Both are going to be cheaper than using S3 but a long shot, but Wasabi is my pick for sure.(Full Disclosure:  I don’t work for Wasabi, but I am a Wasabi Partner and love the simplicity and the pricing structure.)

(repository went to RAW once again, formatted it one more time...)  Are you on a virtual machine, and using ESXI as your hypervisor?  There are a few windows updates that can cause this top happen, but uninstalling the patch just gets you back from RAW to REFS temporarily until the patch is reinstalled down the road.  The solid solution is to disable hot-add/hot-plug on that VM.https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1012225

Well, I tried at least 1 HoL Challenge & didn’t do so well. The Lab UI is a bit clunky to get the full view; otherwise I would’ve done well’ish 🤷🏻‍♂️😊 I knew what to do..pretty easy. Manipulating through the UI gave me fits is all. It is kind clunky but you get used to it.  The other issue is that some windows don’t fit so I had to zoom Chrome out a bit to see buttons and the like.

Well, I tried at least 1 HoL Challenge & didn’t do so well. The Lab UI is a bit clunky to get the full view; otherwise I would’ve done well’ish 🤷🏻‍♂️😊 I knew what to do..pretty easy. Manipulating through the UI gave me fits is all.  If you never did a HOL, then it doesn’t hurt to do the practise lab or something different. Just to get used to the small details. On the other hand I’ve missed the US keyboard layout and got confused in the first task 🤣 Hmm...labs won’t open for me...just got to a loading screen and then back to the main page.  But I had an issue logging on initially so maybe I just need to try an incognito window…. I had the same issue but after reloading the page it started to work again. Yeah, maybe just reloading would have helped, but worked great in a new incognito window.

Wow...hard to beat Max.  I’m just happy I remember how to do anything with virtual distributed switches since I haven’t touched them in over 6 years, and I’m pretty sure that was on 6.5 or 6.7.

how to move virtual veeam to physical server

I suspect there is also a way to do it with VeeaMover.  Have both the old and new repository on whichever server makes sense, and the move it.  But honestly, I’d just migrate the configuration (with the jobs stopped), copy the backup data to the new repo, rescan/scan the repo, and then map the backup job to the newly found data.  This should keep the existing backup chains, vs having to start new.
