Poor SAN transport mode performance

These days I had to troubleshoot poor VMware vSphere SAN transport mode performance during backup with Veeam. Before SAN mode, NDB transport mode was used. NBD outperformed SAN mode totally!Here are some facts about the environment.EnvironmentVMFS volume are hosted by two HPE 3PAR arrays in a synchronous replication configuration (Remote Copy) with Peer Persistence. ESXi hosts are running on different versions. Backup (here: Veeam Backup and Replication) is installed on a dedicated physical host. This host is connected with 10G LAN and a single FC uplink to one out of two fabrics.Backup performanceThe used backup mode in this environment was NDB transport mode. This was because the physical host wasn’t equipped with a FC HBA. To improve backup performance a HBA was installed. How to size for NAS/File share backups?

Sizing for NAS/file share backup can appear difficult initially, but with the help of the unofficial NAS Calculator by Hal Yaman it definitely will be a bit easier.As you can see from the screenshot below you need to know roughly how much source data in TB your file share(s) contain, how many files and directories. In case you are wondering what is primary vs secondary repository? Primary is for your short term retention (newest version) and secondary is for long term retention (older versions than newest).The user guide has some good info on the secondary copy settings.Once you have filled all out, just click the Calculate button to get full sizing for all components:Cache repository File Proxy Primary repository Secondary RepositoryHope this was useful and please do post any questions or comments.

This would mean you are doubling up data reductions which will of course not happen. A very cool feature is the easy Export check box that will give you a URL to come back and review the estimate and how did you reach it:

Are you backing up your Office 365? And… why not?I’m not going into the lengthy and exhausting discussion of why you should take care of your data, even if it’s stored in something unbreakable like “the cloud”, at least not in this post. I would like to focus on one of the features of the new Veeam Backup for Office 365 v4, which was released just the other day. This feature is “object storage support“, as you may have guessed it already from the title of this fine post!So, this means that you can take Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage or even IBM Cloud Object Storage and use it for your Veeam Backup for Office 365. Since the years when I was NetApp SE at Avnet/Techdata, I have always carried NetApp in my heart.And since I've been at Veeam, if there's one product I really like, it's Veeam Availability Orchestrator (VAO).So you can imagine that when Veeam announced VAO v3 with the major new feature of integration with NetApp technologies, it was a total excitement for me.In a NetApp environment, one of the promise of VAO is to drive the entire ONTAP storage failover during a DR to a  recovery site and then orchestrate the restart of applications at that recovery site.Is the promise really being delivered? Veeam Backup Repository Design 🔥

In another Topic, I wrote  about designing a Proxy In This Topic will see about the repository design.We need to consider The key recommendation is to follow the 3-2-1 rule. Calculate 1 core and 4GB RAM per repository task slot. The recommended minimum for a repository is 2 cores and 8GB RAM.Sizing  The recommended amount of CPU for a repository is 1 core per concurrent configured task slot on a repository server. Configure at minimum a 2 core and 8GB RAM repository server to allow the operating system to be more responsive. When sizing task slots on a repository you have to understand when and how many task slots are consumed. Any write process will consume a task slot. So backing up 10 VMs in one job using per-job backup chains will only write one file (VBK/VIB) in the end - so it consumes one task slot. What is the size of a vSphere Changed Block Tracking block (CBT)

An interesting question arose some time ago. A customer changed permissions of files on a Windows file-server VM. Changes were replicated using DFS. So far so good, but the amount of data that was processed at next incremental backup of target VM was even more than a full backup. Because incremental backup is based on VMware Changed Block Tracking (CBT) feature, it was suddenly interesting to know whats the size of a CBT block. After some recherche I did not find an answer to this question. But I did find a great script that calculates CBT incremental backup size. Based on this script I created the following script to list the amount and the size of blocks changed in between of two snapshots. Outcome in shortWhen using the script – described in detail later – to show CBT blocks I was surprised.
