[What (else) is new in v12 - XIII] - File Level Restore – Restore Permissions only

Another new feature when restoring (Windows) files is the possibility to restore only the permissions. This can be helpful if you accidentally activate inheritance for a directory.You can select single files or a directory. As usual, a summary is displayed when the job is completed. The error shown in the screenshot is due to a file that has already been deleted and for which the permissions cannot be restored.For this to work, network connection must be established. VIX does not work here.

Veeam Backup & Replication Database backup

Hello There, I just wanted to share an issue I had on one of my customer to avoid others the problem:We setup a standard Veeam Backup & replication Server on a W2019 VM and a Std SQL 2019 on another one to host the DBs from VBR and Enterprise Manager.The DBA from the customer insisted to setup an alias for the DB server when pointing Veeam to its Database server as it’s their best practice to facilitate migration (He was obviously not aware how easy it is to move Veeam Database). So he setup a CNAME that pointed to the real SQL server.The setup went well using the CNAME. We created a “management job” to save Veeam by itself, VBR+SQL servers. The job detected the roles and proceeded as normal but failed on SQL VSS processing. We spent a lot of time to validate that permissions were right (the DBA didn't gave us the sysadmin rights on the backup service account, wise guy) and that the service account on the SQL had the proper permissions too for the VSS writers. Long Story short: I f

KASTEN Disaster Recovery

Automate Instant Disk Recovery using the new FCD Restore API

Let's take a look at the new restore endpoints in the Veeam Backup and Replication API - For clarity, I am not talking about the Enterprise Manager API but the new  api attached directly to your VBR install - This is future of automating VBR and I could not be more excited about having this decouple from Enterprise Manager. So, what is a first class disk? Essentially its bunch of capabilities that VMware have opened up in the vSphere API allowing for vendors (or you..) to create block devices independently of a virtual machine. Veeam have hooked into this allowing for you to restore individual disks from a restore point, they create a new datastore over their vPower NFS magic and make this disk available for consumption. High level steps we need to take programatically to make this work Perform the FCD restore using the Veeam B&R API  Find the attached/restored file via the vSphere API (vStorageObjectManager) Reconfigure our target VM to attach the restored VMDK file sitting mounte

Nutanix Community Edition in Proxmox, Part 1 Initial Setup

Nutanix has been around for sometime but I have only recently decided to take a peak at it.I am going to install a single node cluster nested in my Proxmox homelab.First step is to create your Nutanix account (free) and login. Telegram Notifications from Ubuntu Server - all SSH Logins

Veeam B&R – NAS Cache Metadata Movement Gets Stuck

Alt Text: Banner graphic displaying the post titleHi,Another quick hint from the field. I’ve seen on multiple occasions that Veeam can get stuck when moving metadata between cache repositories. I needed to move a batch of NAS Cache metadata to a new location, due to a change in Veeam Backup & Replication v12, whereby now it is recommended that you provision no less than 1GB of cache space per 1 million file versions, per backup job. A bit different to some of the previous ‘best practice’ guidelines of ~4GB total!As a quick side note, the Veeam Best Practice documentation now suggests 5% of the source data size as your cache size when using object, but I’m sticking to the Veeam Helpcenter documentation’s 1GB per 1 million file versions guidance, as it’s a good minimum for sizing. The Veeam Best Practice documentation doesn’t always scale well once you’ve got TBs of data. For example: At 50TB of data across 25 million files, your sizing with the best practice starts at 2.5TB of cache

Security vulnerabilities in VMware vCenter Server (09/2021)

I thought it would be good to share this here, although this is already covered on many news sites.Yesterday VMware did publish a Security Advisory regarding multiple vulnerabilities in vCenter Server. The most critical one "CVE-2021-22005” did receive a CVSSv3 score of 9.8 (of 10) and an attacker could take over the control just be uploading a file via port 443. Although vCenter shouldn’t be reachable from the WAN/internet, the vulnerabilities should still be seen as very critical; an inside attacker could already be waiting.All together there were 19 CVEs published and fixed by VMware. Accepted for the sixth year in a row. #VeeamVanguard Veeam Vanguard 2023 I was a part of the Veeam Vanguard program for the past five years in 2018-2022, with the hopes of another renewal for the 2023 year. Applications opened up for the 2023 year, and this time, it was all based on your application, whereas in previous years, you could have others nominate you. I have remained active with the Veeam space promoting the product, blogging, Twitter, Paper.li E-Newspaper, and even wrote a third edition of my book for Packt Publishing - Mastering Veeam Backup & Replication v12So I filled out the application with examples of all my activities throughout the year in the hopes I would be accepted. Veeam Backup and Replication provides two different backup modes to process Hyper-V backups, both relying on the Microsoft VSS framework.On-Host backup mode, for which backup data processing is on the Hyper-V node hosting the VM, leveraging non transportable shadow copies by using software VSS provider. Automatically create vSphere roles to use with Veeam ONE

Based on my original script from 2020 where I created a vCenter role for Veeam Backup & Replication with PowerCLI, I decided to do the same for Veeam ONE. You can find the other script for VBR here:As a result the blog post here with the new script was born !This PowerShell / PowerCLI script lets you create a new vCenter server role with all the cumulative privileges and permissions to use them with Veeam ONE V11.The privileges used are based on the recommendations out of the Veeam Help Center which you can find here: Connection to Virtualization ServersSimply execute the script and follow the steps to fill in the relevant data. Most importantly your vCenter server name, the username and your password.
