The VM snapshot can be considered a point-in-time copy of a VM that includes virtual disks, system state, configuration, and so on. Veeam Backup & Replication uses snapshots as a source of data for replication. What is Replication? Replication is a data protection method that creates a copy of data in a separate location. It usually works on a scheduled basis, meaning data is copied every few minutes, hourly, or daily. How Veeam Backup Works with Virtual MachinesVeeam Backup & Replication produces image-level backups of VMs. It treats VMs as objects, not as a set of files. When you back up VMs, Veeam Backup & Replication copies a VM image at a block level. Objective: Utilize Veeam’s CDP to protect critical virtual machines where near-zero data loss is essential.Background: We are using CDP to safeguard our network monitoring software, which collects and graphs data from our network elements over time. The key goal is to ensure consistent graphical data during polling periods, maintaining accuracy even during failover or updates.Constraints: Deploying CDP is more complex than anticipated, as it’s an advanced feature that requires careful configuration. While the deployment process could be an entire article in itself, the most important advice is to verify DNS resolution for all components being deployed—double, triple, and even quadruple check to ensure everything is correctly configured. The first part of my test was to seed the CDP policy to a replica we had on our target server.
